An uncredited typeface discovered within the pages of Alphabete: Ein Schriftatlas von A bis Z named "Fat Cat" provided the pattern for this exercise in minimalist type design. Best used sparingly for inescapable, if somewhat cryptic, headlines. Both versions of this font include the complete Latin 1252 and CE 1250 character sets, with localization for Romanian and Moldovan.

This industrial-strength titling face takes its design cues from Hans Eduard Meier's Syntax Antigua. This version is bolder and beefier, so your headlines will grab and hold attention in a refined and genteel manner. Both versions include complete Latin 1252, Central European 1250 and Turkish 1524 character sets, with localization for Moldovan, Romanian and Turkish.

An isometric grid of a font, Gridlock takes an italicised modular approach to its letterforms. It is, however, not willfully strict about the application of that grid - the W and V and S, for example, have carefully considered diagonals that freely intersect the layout. More strictly designed but possibly less attractive versions are available as alternate characters.

LTC Spire with alternate caps was designed by Lanston’s type director Sol Hess in 1937. Spire Roman was designed without lowercase. But it includes alternate rounded caps which transform this extra condensed “fat face” into more of an art deco titling face. Spire Roman has been used within department store logos, luxury hotel signage, perfumes, etc, etc.

Dex Gothic is another sort of stencil type. Instead of the "normal" routine of blocked-out horizontal or vertical areas, Dex Gothic creates its stencil appearance through the unique placement of diagonals. The result is a technical-like appearance, which bears some resemblance to 1980s technology products. Dex Gothic should be used large in headlines or logos.

An original type family designed for ParaType in 2001 by Zakhar Yaschin. The fonts were created within 'One Touch' project. The aim of the experiment was searching for a grapheme through primitive forms and intentional avoiding 'adjusted' characters. The family includes Wood style imitating woodcut letters, and a set of pictograms. For use in advertising and display typography.

Fine and Dandy JNL comes from the hand lettered title of the 1929 movie "Isle of Escape"; found on the sheet music for its theme song "My Kalua Rose". An engraved and fancy Roman, the style combines elements of Western, Art Nouveau and Art Deco into one attractive type design; available in both regular and oblique versions.

Suomi Script is a typeface with a twist (pun intended): it has more than 1600 ligatures with two or more glyphs connected to make it look like an odd hand-written script polished by ITC. With Open Type savvy programs this font automatically replaces single characters with the ligatures. Some hand kerning is needed here and there.

A 1928 menu for the restaurant “Rotisserie Du Cardinal” had the word “Cardinal” hand lettered in quite an unusual Art Nouveau type design consisting of thick and thin lines using angles to form the letter shapes. This eccentric (yet charming) style of lettering is now available as Rotisserie Menu JNL in both regular and oblique versions.

This stylish stout script was originally issued in the 1930s under the name “Fulgor” by the spanish foundry Fundición Gans. Cursory research suggests that Saks-Fifth Avenue found it suitably snooty to use extensively in its newspaper ads of that period. Perhaps somewhat ironically, this version takes its name from one of comedian W. C. Fields' many odd aliases.

Ruckus is a simple & legible graffiti style with a thick, crisp outline style on the capitol letter keys and the matching fill style which can be overlaid on the lowercase keys. Here's an offering from the Blackfriars Type Foundry of London that's perfect for commanding headlines. The letterforms have been carefully kerned for a tight fit to increase the visual color of this nostalgic behemoth. Sasparillo is an "extreme" Tuscan face, with reversed emphasis, by which we mean the horizontals are far heavier than the verticals. Saspirillo Fizz has been put through our (not quite) patented "fizzing" process, in order to give it that weathered look of heavily used type. Chancellor is a robust hand-drawn sans serif display typeface. Centennial appeared in 1986 in honor of Linotype’s 100th birthday. The roman and light cuts of the font are reminiscent of the Century typeface, particularly on that of Linn B. Benton and Morris F. Benton, designed around the turn of the 19th century for the American Type Founders. Like Century, Centennial too embodies a cool, reserved neutrality.

Kino font was designed in 1930 by Martin Dovey for the Monotype Corporation. Heavy in weight with the letters clipped at the top and bottom, Kino is unique among display types. Display typefaces with triangular serifs are sometimes called Latins and Kino is referred to as a serifless Latin. Use Kino font sparingly in informal display situations."

Free-form hand lettering on a 1979 poster for the Washington, D.C. exhibition of watercolors and etchings by the Elie Abrahami inspired Art Director JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions. This type of lettering was most popular in the late 50s through the mid-60s for movie titles, greeting cards and poster text.

“News Gothic” has been a reliable workhorse of a font since it was created by Morris Fuller Benton and first offered for sale in 1908 by American Type Founders. Correntino Railway is a product of argentine typographic archeology project called “Tipografía Histórica Ferroviaria” (Fabio Ares & Octavio Osores, since 2012). Is about the signboards of the stations of the line of the Argentine Correntino Economic Railway (1892-1969). The letter of this signboards can be described as display type, with elementary geometric shapes, vertical line modulation and slight contrast.

It doesn’t take long to see that Cheap Skit is a super legible, easy going font. It is intended to be used where text needs to be clear and legible, but have certain amount of handmade energy. I’d say that products that has something to do with children (toys, clothes, games, posters …) or something organic, recipes, bookcovers …

An old wood type we picked up in London from the Fredrick Ullmer Company. It's not marked, and we've never seen it in a catalog, so we don't know who made it. We like it for antique-looking western posters and playbills. We added the lowercase. We have seen it used on British music hall bills.

Lichtspielhaus Slab is an ultra condensed handwritten typeface based on Lichtspielhaus. It still transports you back to a time where neon lights and marquee letters decorated cinema facades. Mercurius Script font was designed by the Hungarian wood engraver and type designer Imre Reiner in 1957 for the Monotype Corporation.
