This typeface takes its design cues from Dudley Upright, a Dan X. Solo find from the sixties. The raw emotional energy of German Expressionism is evident in this font, based on Judith Type, designed by C. H. Kleukens in 1923. This version takes its name from the Biblical character who lost his head to the original font’s namesake. An isometric grid of a font, Gridlock takes an italicised modular approach to its letterforms. It is, however, not willfully strict about the application of that grid - the W and V and S, for example, have carefully considered diagonals that freely intersect the layout. More strictly designed but possibly less attractive versions are available as alternate characters.

Created for captions and similar serif situations where small type is required, Freight Micro is amazingly illustrative for large type too. This half-wedge, half-slab design provides the firmest of foundations to build your design on. The abruptness of the sharply carved italics take emphasis to a higher form. Freight Micro is an exercise in whispering very loudly.

A couple of pieces of sheet music from France [circa 1925] offered the inspiration for Chanson De Paris JNL (Song of Paris), which is available in both regular and oblique versions. This hand lettered Art Nouveau style features a unique take on thick-and-thin lettering which foreshadows the Art Deco typefaces to come during the 1930s.

Rock Face was inspired by a crude but effective home made sign I came across advertising a garage sale. The lettering was created using sticky black insulation tape which, like a child's drawing, had a certain naive charm. The type design presented here is obviously more considered, but I like to think it has the same raw dynamism.

This stylish stout script was originally issued in the 1930s under the name “Fulgor” by the spanish foundry Fundición Gans. Cursory research suggests that Saks-Fifth Avenue found it suitably snooty to use extensively in its newspaper ads of that period. Perhaps somewhat ironically, this version takes its name from one of comedian W. C. Fields' many odd aliases.

The inspiration for Brattleboro Stencil JNL was found within a reproduction of a sales catalog for stencil punch dies manufactured by S.M. Spencer & Co. (originally of Brattleboro, VT), circa 1868. Basically a sans serif letter, the font's unusual feature is its "split tail" design where the letters take on a bit of a "Western" look in appearance.

Instead of being directly based on classic wood or metal type examples, Mule Train JNL takes a roundabout route in its development. Images of a set of letters and numbers cut from plywood (which in turn were based on a vintage type design) served as the work models. Mule Train JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

It doesn’t take long to see that Cheap Skit is a super legible, easy going font. It is intended to be used where text needs to be clear and legible, but have certain amount of handmade energy. I’d say that products that has something to do with children (toys, clothes, games, posters …) or something organic, recipes, bookcovers …

Cat Fight is small decorative font family containing two "weights". They are not weights in actual meaning, as they differ by style but to secure safe OTF usage in all OS, they are named as Regular and Bold. Pancetta Pro is a squarish sans-serif typeface with semi-closed aperture and pillow-shaped terminals. The shape of a pillow is furthermore used to enliven the boring horizontal stems which are very frequent in Cyrillic script, and get rid of the right angles. Here's a great old face from the H. W. Caslon foundry in London; a real workhorse. The lowercase is eminently readable, so you can set entire paragraphs to good effect. We don't recommend it for setting all caps, but we did take time to kern it well; so you won't get a jumble of ovelapping letters if you do.

Uptown Line JNL is yet another variation of the Art Deco monoline style of lettering prevalent during the 1930s and 1940s, and is based on titling from vintage sheet music for a Johann Strauss classical piece.

It’s surprising - it can take more time and effort to make something deliberately and artfully imperfect than it does to make a more conventional design. We certainly found this to be the case when designing ‘SpeedSketch’. Perhaps a more accurate name would have been ‘SlowDraw’ but that wouldn’t really capture the essence of the finished design.
