Cut by Monotype between 1900 and 1902, the Monotype Modern font family was based on Miller & Richards News 23 and 28; slightly condensed news text types of the 1890s. Monotype Modern is a lively typeface, with long, fine hairlines and well rounded letterforms, representing the best of nineteenth century modern face design. A classic text face, and typical of the moderns that were produced in the United Kingdom at that time, being less extreme in its rendering than some of the models of purer form being produced elsewhere. Monotype Modern is an excellent text face for magazines, newspapers and books, the heavier and more condensed versions are useful in headlines and display.

(pronounced hor-hay) Some years ago my wife and I had our evening meal in a restaurant on what is called the northshore of Massachusetts. Of course, if you check a globe or map you'll see that the pilgrims needed a compass, it should have been called the eastshore as it's on the east end of the rectangle/hook we call the Commonwealth of Mass. In any event, the menu our waitress gave us was hand-lettered with shapes that I used to develop the 4 fonts called Jorge. When I brought the preliminary drawings into the office Steve Zafarana, a designer and cartoonist referred to them as Jorge's new design, the name stuck.

In a typeface category that has been sorely under-represented until now, Aziga is a high (occasionally reversed) contrast, postmodern, deconstructed-reconstructed, serifless (mostly), fashion didone! Aziga lends itself to being set loud and proud, and the consistent angles throughout the glyphs make it a good candidate for more abstract typographic compositions. For the really graphically inclined (excuse the pun) a rotation of 66° will make the main diagonals in the font horizontal and vertical. Cool right? Sometimes the simplest ideas yield more than one result. The basic “dot matrix” design of aligned circles that was the basis for Transactive JNL also yielded Zera JNL (connected rings) and Pillow Puff JNL (fluffy and cloud-like lettering). One more design was originally cast aside. A separate file is available for filling in the letters with a colored background, however minute adjustments may be needed due to the fact that each drawing or design software program has its own characteristics and quirks. Camden is based on the types used in Camden's 'Remaines concerning Britaine' published in London in 1638. The object was to avoid the contradiction inherent in most 'distressed' typefaces made to give the effect of the imperfections in old print. This means that apparently worn characters are perfectly repeated throughout a setting. The makeup of the Camden fonts means that, with a little extra keying time, alternate characters may be brought in which overcome this. Also many characters are provided which have 'period identities' such as the long s with ligatures, tied sorts ct, sp and st, swash characters in the italic and the double vv, all of which can add a specific age identity.

RensGazet is a decorative blackletter typeface with elaborate upper-case letters and condensed lower-case characters. It was inspired by the masthead of a short-lived weekly newspaper, The Rensselaer Gazette, which was published from 1857 until 1860. I could not find any existing digitized fonts that replicated this old typeface, so I decided to create an interpretation of it. I had samples of few letters in large point sizes and a number of others at a small point size, though these were blurry and not sharply defined. As a result, this typeface is undoubtedly considerably different from the original. Also, my spacing is much tighter than that in the source samples.

Chevin is a contemporary rounded type family in 6 weights which was designed with functionality and legibility in mind. With its open counters and slightly condensed style, Chevin can be used for text and is particularly suited to signage. Erik Spiekermann is a fan, noting that Chevin “is charming without being cute, and very legible even in small sizes because of its restrained shapes and simple construction.” Chevin is named after a hill on the outskirts of Otley in West Yorkshire. Since 2007, the type family has been highly prominent in the UK as Royal Mail’s corporate font and the typeface that adorns every Post Office in the country. The Chevin Pro set includes additional Greek and Cyrillic layouts.

Anago shares the same DNA as its sibling Macha, but is a completely different species than the former or any of my other sans serifs (Aaux Next, Air, Akagi Pro or Wasabi). Soft, ample letterforms are casually constructed and the end result produces a typeface that changes color as it varies in size — allowing the type family to work well in both text and display settings as long as attention is given to size. FA Komunikat is an experimental and geometrical typeface based on simple elements: a circle, it's parts and straight lines. The typeface communicate the spirit of future, dynamism and modernity. FA Komunikat design was based on the sketch of unique lettering from 1932 made by Władysław Strzemiński, Polish vanguard abstract painter, an artist and a typographer. Strzemiński claimed that modern economic letter forms should be standardized and based on lines and arches.
