Inspired by an old Russian book about Moscow’s plan to take over the world, this font was designed to give digital prints the taste of hand lettering. It’s vivid outlines and slight differences in boldness between characters give it an accurate and realistic imperfect letterpress look. It works amazingly well as a text font in small sizes and shows it’s crippled outlines only at larger sizes. »CA Moskow has a plan« has got an extensive character-set including Russian Cyrillic, the Russian Rubel and the Turkish Lira sign. Although it includes kerning, for a full simulation of letterpress print and cold-war feeling we recommend to turn it off.

Life’s always more fun when you reverse the stress. The same goes for the new member of the Cabrito family. Cabrito itself is a recently developed slab serif made for the kid’s book The Clothes Letters Wear. Cabrito proved to be more popular than I thought, and I promised I would create an inverted style for this new addition to the font world--a variant that would pair well with the original or even stand well on its own. And so now, here it is. Cabrito Inverto, which features the reversed stress of the strokes from a font’s “normal” traits. Inverted stress fonts are most often associated with cowboys and the Old West. The inverted stress gives it a happy-go-lucky appearance, not to be taken too seriously. It’s a pleasantly rounded, not-so-strictly geometric typeface with handwriting-inspired forms. Whew, that’s a mouthful! Inverto’s bundle of alternates is accessible in any OpenType-enabled program. The intention with Capo was to make a typeface with a pinched, angled connection between curves and verticals. We have explored this incised, cut motif previously on typefaces, most notably Noah, Sabre and Harbour. These have focussed more specifically on stone-cut forms. For Capo we wanted to mix the expressive quality of its ‘pinch’ idea with an overall aesthetic that could be applied to text rather than headline. So Capo has something of the function and warm, organic quality of Grotesque style typefaces. In Capo’s Bold and Black weights the sharpness of the letter shapes is more dramatic and emphasised, making for great effect for large-sized text. Why Capo? A capo is a device used on the neck of a stringed (typically fretted) instrument to shorten the playable length of the strings by pinching or clamping them in place, hence raising the pitch.

The geometrical drawing of Fenomen Slab follows the guidelines set by our other font family Fenomen Sans. It is a perfect companion of Fenomen Sans, as well as being a standalone font family capable of delivering its own expression and aesthetics. A disc jockey-only promotional sleeve for a 1964 [45 rpm] release of “Close to Me” and “Let Them Talk” by Dan Penn featured the song titles printed in a stencil typeface on the record sleeve. Closely resembling a stencil version of Franklin Gothic but with its own unique characteristics, this design has been reinterpreted as Turntable Stencil JNL and is available in both regular and oblique versions. For trivia buffs, Dan Penn is a singer-songwriter-record producer, often collaborating with Dewey Lindon “Spooner” Oldham; both closely associated with the late Rick Hall’s Fame recording studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. In 1964, Hall started the Fame record label, and for a time it was distributed by Vee-Jay Records of Chicago, the first major Black-owned record label in the United States. Penn’s release was only the second for the new label; Fame 6402.

Up until the late 1920s, it was a popular habit in American songwriting to use African Americans as the topic of compositions using denigrating themes, words and even exaggerated character illustrations on the covers of the published sheet music. One such example of what was considered "entertainment" for its time was a piece entitled "Little Black Me". While this now socially and morally unacceptable piece of forgettable tripe is collected by some only for the historical documentation of the times they reflected, one good "positive" came out of this negative chapter of our country's musical heritage: The beautiful floral ornamented letters in the song's title has yielded Fancy Free JNL. Originally hand-lettered on an arc, these spurred Roman letters have been re-drawn, and are offered in both the regular design and a companion version with the ornamentation removed for lettering that is less ornate.

Grrr is a headstrong modular display typeface with a large amount of alternative glyphs. It consists of eight weights ranging from Thin to Black. A variable font is also available. The typeface is designed on a modular grid and it proudly ignores the rules of optical compensations: the horizontal and vertical strokes have identical thickness, and round and triangular letters have no overshoots at all! All these peculiarities are making the typeface usable at sizes from 21pt and larger in print and approximately from 24px on non-retina screens. Grrr is especially good at extremely large sizes. The typeface includes three stylistic sets with even more bizarre letterforms. These sets activate a cyclic pseudorandom substitution of letters from a range of alternates — the letterforms keep changing as you type! The typeface was designed by Dmitry Goloub and Alexandra Korolkova and released by Paratype in 2019.

I searched all over the internet looking for a realistic sand writing font and came away empty handed. Undaunted by this, I grabbed my business partner, Mary and trekked down to our local river, the Arkansas (pronounced ar-KAN-sas around here). Using sticks, we scratched out the entire alphabet in the sand, including upper & lowercase, and punctuation marks! I photographed the characters, converted them to line art on my computer and used font creating software to turn it into a true type font! This font was designed for adding dates, places and messages to your beach photos that looked as if you wrote it in the sand before you took the picture! It is a decorative font best used in large, headline sizes. To make it appear more realistic, select a darker color from the sand in the photo to use for the type instead of black!

A set of original ornamental symbols was designed by Viktor Kharyk and licensed to ParaType in 2007. The name was inspired by the famous book “Champ Fleury” by Geoffroy Tory (1529) but the theme of blooming meadow was embodied much more literally. Each ornamental motive has a real prototype in flora. Mainly there are plants raising on Ukrainian wooded steppe. Plants were chosen for their Ukrainian and Latin names begin of proper letters from Ukrainian and Latin alphabets. The font is consisted of two styles: Day for normal and Night for reversed that reminds night lighting by its unexpected distribution of black and white areas. Fleurons may be used for creation of ornamental surfaces, composed borders and corners, decoration of any materials, and even as botanical illustrations. Whiteblack is a slab serif with a soft touch, designed for contemporary typography and comes up with 6 weights for positive and negative settings plus handslanted obliques. In dark backgrounds, especially for signage and on screen, negative settings glow and appear heavier than positive settings. To avoid the „glow-effect“ the typeface contains special weights for an optimal balance between white and black. With a stylish Dutch accent, this font draws inspiration from a 1935 brochure by the talented graphic designer and artist Dirk Hart.
