My name is Teruyoshi Matsui. I am a Brush Art Designer. My foundry ‘Brush Art Design Office’ is situated at the foot of an active volcano ‘ Mt. Aso ’ in the Kumamoto Prefecture, the southern part of Japan. I design the letters of the alphabet with a Japanese brush. I have created the brush font named ‘ Lethal Fake ’ in my unique brush style. At the beginning of making the font I was going to name it ‘BrushType Lethal’ and tell you, “ Be careful using it. That’s because it ’s Lethal ”. But actually I was very disappointed when it was finished. I tried to make it lethal, but it was not. So I changed the font name into ‘ Lethal Fake ’. This time I have to say to you, “ Be careful using it. That’s because it’s not Lethal ”. Thank you.

Paradise Lost is a 1667 poem by John Milton which mostly concerns the Biblical story of the Fall of Man, Eve's temptation by the devil and the expulsion of Adam and Eve from Eden. It's quite a hefty read, as the poem consists of ten books with over 10.000 lines of verse. Needless to say, I didn't read it all. But, it did give me inspiration for a font, which I called Paradise Lost. It's a good name, even though there is nothing Biblical about this font. Paradise Lost was created (pun intended) using a broken bamboo satay skewer and Chinese ink. It is all caps, but upper and lower case differ and like to mingle. I also included several ligatures for double lower case letters (aa, ee, jj, kk, etc.). Paradise Lost comes with an eternity of diacritics.

German designer Rosemarie Kloos-Rau created Wiesbaden Swing in 1992 for Linotype. This light, informal typeface is based on her own handwriting, and the strokes have a feeling of spontaneity and energetic flair. Kloos-Rau says about her typeface: “From the experience with my design company I recognized the need for fonts with personality. Architype Crouwel is a collection of typefaces created in collaboration with Wim Crouwel, following his agreement with The Foundry, to recreate his experimental alphabets as digital fonts. Crouwel's most recognized work was for the Van Abbe and Stedelijk museums (1954 –72) where he established his reputation for radical, grid-based design. Architype Catalogue originates from Wim Crouwel’s Stedelijk Museum exhibition catalogue for sculptor Claes Oldenburg, 1970. The cover’s soft ‘padded’ letterforms evoke the artist’s work. Oldenburg was so taken with the design, that he asked Crouwel to complete the alphabet.

After my son was born, I found myself reading him a lot of books. A LOT of books. Some were good, some were great, but I found myself wanting to develop something using my skills and interests to make something that only I could make. In short, I realized my son needed to be indoctrinated—I mean, introduced into the wonderfully wild world of fonts. So, I set about to make a board book to teach about typography, called “The Clothes Letters Wear.” You can learn more about the book here. I’ve made the captivating illustrations bright and colorful, and the use of different letter forms makes for a fascinating read to delight ages young and young at heart. And, as an added bonus, this children’s book has a custom designed font. I’m always looking for an excuse to design a new font, and this book created the perfect alibi. Drum roll, please. I now give you … Cabrito (“little goat” en Español). This new serif typeface incorporates the latest research on typographic legibility for children, features to make it—well, extra legible. A little background: studies show that Bookman Old Style is one of the most readable typefaces, and as a consequence or perhaps the reason why, it is used thoroughly for children’s books. This font became my initial inspiration for the typeface. Then, I found more legibility research saying that (brace yourselves) Comic Sans is also very legible for beginning readers, much due to the large x-height and softer, easily recognizable forms. In addition, forms that are closer to handwriting also seem to be more legible. Once I threw all that into my cauldron and stewed it a bit, the result was a pleasantly rounded typeface that includes not-so-strictly geometric, handwriting-inspired forms for the b, d, p, and q. This problem was avoided in Bague Round by applying all necessary optical corrections at the rounded corners in order to retain its robust qualities. Mechanical replacement of the stem endings with standard arcs was not implemented and each round form of the horizontal, vertical and diagonal strokes was treated differently from the other. Whilst the rounded endings at heavier weights become gradually more flat at acute corners, the round stems in letters such as A, b, m, p, s are perfectly matched with sharp diagonals in letters such as M, N, w, v, in a very distinct manner. Minotaur is an original monoline design based on an Oscan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oscan_language ) votive inscription from the second century B.C.E. The letterforms immediately caught my eye in the wonderful book, Lettering by Hermann Degering, and I decided to create a typeface based on them with only enough compromises to make it usable as a modern alphabet. Not quite as straightforward as I had hoped. For example, the Oscan language (the predominant language in the Italian peninsula before the ascendance of Latin), has no letter "O", so the distinctive curve of the "D" was used as the model for the rounded letters "C" and "G" and more subtly for "O" and "Q"; this shape is also echoed in the original design of "B", "P" and "R". Also, the Oscan letterforms for A, K, L, M, N, S, and U are rather quaint, so I've included modern forms as alternates. Minotaur offers the best of both worlds: Just as the mythical Minotaur is half man and half bull, the font Minotaur is half modern and half ancient. Thanks to OpenType features (stylistic sets), you can easily switch from ancient letterforms to modern (if you have an OpenType-savvy application such as Adobe InDesign) for Latin, Greek, and Cyrillic alphabets. Minotaur supports all modern European languages, including Modern (monotonic) Greek and those that use the Cyrillic alphabet. And, yes, it supports Oscan, both right-facing and left-facing. MOTORWAY is the companion typeface to TRANSPORT, the British road sign lettering. The Motorway alphabet was created for the route numbers on motorway signage, and is taller and narrower than the accompanying place names and distances which are printed in Transport. However, for Motorway Jock Kinneir and Margaret Calvert created only the numbers 0 to 9, the capitals A, B, E, M, N, S and W, ampersand, slash, parentheses and a comma. So, although the lettering made its first appearance on the Preston bypass in 1958, K-Type Motorway is the first complete typeface and contains all upper and lower case letters, plus a full complement of punctuation, symbols and Latin Extended-A accented characters. As with the Transport alphabet the starting point was Akzidenz Grotesk, Motorway taking inspiration from condensed versions. Changes were mainly driven by a quest for legibility, resulting in some reduced contrast between horizontal and vertical strokes, and Gill-esque straight diagonal limbs on the 6 and 9, and high vertex for the M. Kinneir and Calvert designed the limited range of characters in two weights; a SemiBold 'Permanent' weight for use as white letters on blue motorway signs, and a Bold 'Temporary' weight for heavier black letters on yellow non-permanent signage. In addition to creating full fonts in both original weights, the K-Type family adds a new Regular weight, plus a set of italics, completing a highly usable condensed typeface which, while rooted in history, is fully functional for both print and web usage. The K-Type fonts are spaced and kerned normally, simply increase the tracking to recapture the generous spacing of motorway signage.

These fonts just ooze Christmas and holiday spirit from every curve of every letter! If Kingthings Willowless Pro is a Christmas font, well... then Kingthings Willow Pro is a Christmas tree complete with decorations and lights! This font is sooooo ornamented - but still quite readable. I have cleaned up all the outlines, redesigned the F (which looked more like a J), tweaked some more letters and then expanded the font with the usual multilingual glyphs. I loved this font when I first saw it, but was very nervous that it would be difficult to design the accents - but it was a breeze! It has been one of the most enjoyable fonts to rework so far. Mono-Spec Stencil is a monospaced family of sans-serif type. At least in default settings, all characters across the typeface share a common width, which is immediately noticeable for its condensed nature. Mono-Spec Stencil is a sibling of a non-stencil family, simply named Mono-Spec. Characters in each are just as wide, allowing Mono-Spec Stencil to be used together with Mono-Spec, as a secondary typeface. As a typeface whose characters are stencil-shaped, this design channels the spirit of resistance and street culture. When you look at the family, remember that it ships in two different formats. Depending on your preference, you can install the typeface as a single Variable Font or use the family’s five static OpenType font files instead. Those weights run from Light through Bold. While the static-format fonts offer a good intermediary-step selection, users who install the Variable Font have vastly greater control over their text’s stroke width. The Mono-Spec Stencil Variable Font’s weight axis allows users to differentiate between almost 1,000 possible font weights. That enables you to fine-tune your text’s exact appearance on-screen or in print. Whatever format you choose, the Mono-Spec Stencil fonts are equipped with several OpenType features. The most striking of these can be activated via a Stylistic Set. That will replace several letters – like “B”, “E”, “F”, “H”, and “I” with double-width alternates. Those alternates take up as much space as two characters placed next to each other otherwise word. The effect of Mono-Spec Stencil’s double-width alternates is striking, and their use strikes a strong chord in any display typography applying them.

This font has been described as "one of the cutest fonts I've ever seen. I can imagine a beautiful, young 22-year-old fashion design student from Los Angeles, CA with this handwriting as she's writing in her journal." I have cleaned it up a bit, increased the size of all the dots slightly and then designed all the diacritics and expanded the character set. The lowercase "f" has a big overhang and the lowercase "j" goes really far to the left - I have programmed automatic (OpenType) Contextual Alternate versions that automatically substitute with shorter variants when letters collide. These alternate letters can also be switched on using the OpenType palette's Stylistic Alternates or Stylistic set 01 ("j") and 02 ("f").
