MB NEGATIVESPACE was inspired on a trip to Birmingham with my wife, seeing a billboard with the main text and parts of it missing. The idea is to use it sparingly; use a good amount of tracking to fill in the blanks and it works even better. Great for headlines, displays logotypes and short texts.

In the 1943 Three Stooges comedy short “Higher than a Kite”, Curly reaches into a box with the label “hand grenades” painted on its side and pulls out one of the devices. The bold, squared stencil hand lettering on that prop inspired Stencil Label JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Doodle Pen is a whimsical hand-drawn typeface. Characters are based on ballpoint pen multi-line drawings creating a scribbled texture and soft edges. This typeface will work well for headings, short paragraphs and scrap-book style designs. Doodle Pen is extended, containing West European diacritics making it suitable for multilingual environments and publications.

Dessert Script is a display font in one style based on flat brush calligraphy. It combines the smoothness of contours, overall dynamics of text setting, open and friendly nature. Dessert Script is good for short inscriptions, greetings, food packaging and menus. The typeface was designed by Alexander Lubovenko and released by Paratype in 2015.

Avenida was created by architect and designer John Chippindale in 1994 and is a constructed typeface that leaves a cool, sophisticated impression. An Art Deco typeface inspired lettering found on buildings constructed in Spain's Andalucian region in the 1930's and 1940's. Avenida is best suited to headlines and short to middle length texts.

Quimby is a retro inspired design marrying love for wedge serifs with grotesque fonts. Inspiration comes from various signage in Detroit, MI. Great for headlines, displays, logos, and short bodies of text. Quimby comes in two styles, and features true small caps, lining numerals for both cap heights, catch phrase words, fractions, and alternates.

Lilycat is based on paper cut-outs of circles and rectangles. Letter shapes share characteristics of early modern fonts such as Futura. Uneven edges give the typeface a hand-made, playful, authentic feel. The font is suitable for use in short paragraphs, headings and captions, logo types or whatever use you see fit. Enjoy!

Spirea is a calligraphic serif for short texts and headings. It’s great for children's books, postcards, landing pages, packaging of sweets, natural products and organic cosmetics. The character set includes alternates and strokes, extended Latin, extended Cyrillic and Greek. The author of Spirea is Natalia Vasilyeva. The typeface was released by Paratype in 2023.

We are going through some crazy days where the number of people interested in letters is only growing. We see lettering everywhere: I can say that finally our field is shouting out loud; letters are THE protagonist more than ever. Hence the need of combining and pairing different styles is booming. Fabiola Script and Fabiola Caps were done in a way that they seem to need each other. There's nothing better than the above images to prove this. But, how does it work? The big swashes of the Script style were designed so they can surround, wrap and mingle with the Caps styles. The smaller swashes are meant to be used when the Script is alone. Simple, right? Microbrew Unicase is the latest addition to the Microbrew family, a versatile retro display family. Microbrew Unicase has 14 individual styles plus a very functional set of catchwords, and a fresh and eclectic set of retro-style ornaments. Microbrew Unicase sports a nice mix between wood type poster style, and vintage letterpress. The more detailed styles work well at large sizes, and the cleaner styles add legibility at smaller sizes. Fitzronald is a body text typeface with a strong personality combined with a good legibility in small sizes. It is an excellent book typeface, but it can be used in e.g. advertising and packaging as well. Due to its good legibility at low resolution, it is a superb website and e-book typeface. Fitzronald is based on Ronaldson, an American typeface originally cut by MacKellar, Smiths & Jordan in 1884.

The Ray Johnson font was inspired by the Father of Mail Art. It's based on the block lettering style used by Ray to add the names of his correspondents to their bunny head portraits (the film How to Draw a Bunny is a superb introduction). The font includes blank bunny heads and other Ray Johnson graphics as scalable vector images, and separate bitmap images are also provided as jpegs and gifs.

Tisk is a superb blackletter font. The Blackletter typeface (also sometimes referred to as Gothic, Fraktur or Old English) was used in the Guthenburg Bible, one of the first books printed in Europe. This style of typeface is recognizable by its dramatic thin and thick strokes, and in some fonts, the elaborate swirls on the serifs. Use this font for any crafting project that requires a personalized look!

There are times when a typeface is used so consistently that it becomes somewhat synonymous with the subject it's used in. The opening and end titles for the ABC-TV series "Naked City" (1958-1963) were set in a bold version of a popular font emulating the look of calligraphic hand lettering. Arcaro JNL is a somewhat lighter and slightly modified version of this typeface and is offered in both regular and oblique versions. The name Arcaro comes from one of the regular characters in this superbly-written police drama, Detective Frank Arcaro.

Aldus was designed by Hermann Zapf and appeared with the font foundry D. Stempel AG in Frankfurt am Main in 1954. Zapf named this font after the famous Venetian printer Aldus Manutius, whose work is among the most important of the Renaissance period as well as Zapf’s inspiration for Aldus. Linotype Aldus was introduced by Linotype Library as a text font lighter than Palatino. Zapf’s goal with his Palatino and Aldus was to create a new form of Old Face typeface. This font gives text the feeling of elegance which was typical of the Renaissance.

Nerone is a quasi-unicase display type family in four weights, from light to black. In its lighter versions, it's reminiscent of dignified flared serifs like Albertus. In its black version, it's comparable to display faces like Serif Gothic, with a hint of Mostra-like despotism... Inspired by ancient Roman capitals, Nerone takes a whimsical look at how they might turn into a black fatface, and how a matching lowercase might give the whole affair a whimsical feel — specifically when applied to fun branding and marketing uses. This is a contrasting font that has unusual serifs and combines elegance and brutalism. Baskerville Display PT is a type family intended for large and extra large point sizes. It was inspired by the faces of John Baskerville and designed for expressive display typography. Two weights of Baskerville Display with matching italics are much lighter than the existing text versions of Baskerville. Each of them is an ideal partner for ITC New Baskerville. A good addition to the family is Baskerville Poster which will look great in very large sizes. The font was designed by Arina Alaferdova under the supervision of Dmitry Kirsanov and released by ParaType in 2016.

When 45 RPM records were the norm for a teenager’s music collection in the 1950s and 1960s, many discs had their labels printed by letterpress. Some record companies utilized a bold, condensed typeface set in all caps for the song’s title and other pertinent information. The digital version of this font is called Recording Artist JNL, and is available in both regular and oblique versions. A companion font loosely based on this type design [but with more original characters and a slightly lighter weight] is Promotional Copy JNL.

Gundrada ML was inspired by the lettering on the tomb of Gundrada de Warenne. She was buried at Southover Church at Lewes, Sussex, in the south of England in 1085. The Latin inscription on her tomb, STIRPS GUNDRADA DUCUM, meaning “Gundrada, descendant of the Duke” may have led to the speculation that she was the daughter of William, Duke of Normandy and bastard son of Robert the Devil of Normandy and Arletta, daughter of a tanner in Falaise. In 1066 William defeated Harold at the Battle of Hastings and was crowned William I of England. More commonly known as William the Conquerer, he commissioned a string of forts around the kingdom and charged trusted Norman Barons to control the contentious Anglo-Saxon population. William de Warenne, husband of Gundrada, was one of these Barons. There has also been the suggestion that Gundrada may have been the daughter of William’s wife, Matilda of Flanders, by a previous marriage. According to the Dictionary of National Biography (Oxford University Press, Oxford, England 1921-22), both of these contentions are in dispute. Searching the past of a thousand years ago is like wandering in a heavy fog: facts are only dimly in view. Regardless, I know that I found these letterforms immediately engaging in their simplicity. Unadorned and unsophisticated, they have a direct honesty that rests well in the company of humanistic sans serifs like Franklin Gothic or Gill Sans, appealing to a contemporary sensibility. The lettering on the tomb is in upper case only. Although Gundrada does not sound Norman French to me, her husband certainly and her father probably were Norman French. Nonetheless, the man that carved her tombstone was probably Anglo-Saxon, like most of the people. For that reason, we are quite comfortable with a fairly generic lower case from an Anglo-Saxon document of the time. The time was a time of transition, of contending language influences.
