In 2011, while tutoring an exercise on Slab Serifs, Josema discovered Robert Thorne’s work for Thorowgood. Specifically, he was fascinated by the extraordinary density of the 6-line Egyptian Pica from 1820-21. As a simple exercise, he wanted to test the limits of readability within the context of a contemporary alphabet. Rothwood Ultra is the result of this experiment. As a way of developing the series, he found it interesting to go to the opposite end of the spectrum and discover how to evolve the extra-black Ultra’s DNA into a super lightweight model. The Hairline and Thin styles are her slim sisters. The third challenge has been the creation of the text version. Light, Book, DemiBold and Bold, including italics and Small Caps close the Rothwood cycle for editorial use.

Neuarc Font Family This is the 20th font family of CozyFonts Foundry, established 10 years ago in 2012 with the release of Aladdin Bold. Neuarc is based loosely on arcs and curves, hence it’s naming. Many sport publications missed typefaces designed especially for sport communication conditions. We usually see only mechanically slanted or other synthetically destroyed standard typefaces. I want to fill in this space and create a system of fonts, that will be used primarily in sport. It is usable for many prints - logotypes, magazines, catalogues, posters etc. Elasticity of glyphs reflected an adrenalinous shapes of latest bikeframes, skies or sportcars. Maximum open arches guaranteed good readability in very small sizes and prevented interchanges of glyphs „o, c, e“ per poor reading conditions. Softness of lowercase is at uppercase balanced in bottom arches, that are subtly kicked-up. Torbjörn Olsson's Interrupt is a salty dog of a sanserif, harboring memories of freighters unloading their cargo in a run-down port. Interrupt works great for signs, and looks just fine painted on the side of a wooden crate or stencilled on an old tarpaulin. Interrupt is recommended for use over 36 points. The font family "DEADman" is mostly inspired by the weird style of the British illustrator Ralph Steadman. He had a long partnership with the American journalist Hunter S. Thompson, drawing pictures for several of his articles and books e.g. "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas." Like Steadman's artwork all the letters are painted with ink. The best ones were selected out of hundreds of variations to get the whole character set complete and look uniform. By combining the regular weight with one (or both) of the additional weights "Blotting" and "Squirting" you can achieve a more freaky and psychadelic look.

This family was inspired by numerous documents and books printed in Paris during the end of the 1700s. Mainly, documents printed by P.G. Simon & N.H. Nyon, “Printers of the parliament” were used for the Normal and italic styles and “Caps”. “Titling” characters were coming from a collection of hymns printed by Nicolas Chapart. In France these Fournier characters, as Baskerville in Great Britain, were the most often in use in the late 1700s, just before the Didot designs. This font supports strong enlargements, specially the capitals of “Caps” file and “Titling”, remaining very smart, elegant and fine.

A slightly regularized digital version of a late Baroque Fraktur type, probably from the beginning of the 18th century, issued by the Norstedts type foundry in Stockholm in 56 point size as "Sju petit fraktur nr 2". This digital font is designed for rather large sizes, at least 30 points. The font includes accented letters for all Western languages, as well as a long s and the usual Fraktur ligatures, e.g. ch, ck, st, tz. The inspiration for Jeeves came from Leslie Carbarga's wonderful book LETTERHEADS, One Hundred Years of Great Design, 1850-1950. It was based on a secondary type usage for the letterhead for Sutherland in New York. The rest of the letterhead had features that were more typical of the Art Deco period, but this script added a touch of timeless elegance. And since at the time I was reading every scrap of P.G. Wodehouse I could get my hands on, the name Jeeves seemed like a perfect fit. The font is loaded with a plethora of extra glyphs, ligature characters and OpenType features.

VLNL Gaufre is a pixel-based font with holes designed by Donald Roos. Each character is built on a grid of doughnut-like elements, which makes it look like a kind of dried dog food, or Belgian waffles. Despite the grid Gaufre still has enough warmth due to the doughy, slightly rounded corners. And because it’s prepared with a hot waffle iron of course. The end result is a merry, chunky typeface that smells of doughnut. Use it for logos or headlines, just add butter and sugar or, better still, top it with whipped cream and cherries. Yummie!

In the 1949 Paramount comedy "My Friend Irma" (a film based on the popular radio series that introduced America to Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis), an opening gag set-up involving excavation work utilizes street barricades which inspired Work Crew Stencil JNL. Placed along the site, different advisories are stenciled upon barricades warning of the work in progress. The scatterbrained Irma (Marie Wilson) walks straight through the construction, oblivious as to what's going on around her and steps right into the open hole dug into the sidewalk (a scene she reprises in 1950's "My Friend Irma Goes West").

I needed a name with ‘brush’ in it and most have already been taken, so I did a little digging and found out that Purshia tridentata, a flowering plant native to the mountainous areas of western North America is called bitterbrush. It is also known as antelope brush, quinine brush and buckbrush - but I settled on Bitterbrush. There’s nothing bitter about Bitterbrush. It is actually a very sweet hand brushed font. It comes with ligatures for double letter combinations and a truck load of diacritics. And (something I am very proud of): it supports the Vietnamese language!

Set it large... I dare you! 100pt+ is definitely encouraged with this face. White Wolf was created to fill the void for condensed sharp wedge serif fonts. The sheet music for the 1934 tune "Two in A Dream" had the title hand lettered in a bold type style that utilized some stencil and some solid lettering. Following through on the stencil portion of the design, Tuxedo Stencil JNL was created in both regular and oblique versions. The 1930s were the era of elegant supper clubs and night spots, and it was not unusual to find gentlemen all decked out in formal wear for an evening on the town, hence the font's name.
