Storefront is what the prolific and talented American sign painters of the 1920s and 1930s would have created if they had access to the advanced lettering and type technologies we have today. Rooted in an incomplete Alf Becker alphabet sample, Storefront is my usual overdose on alternates and swashes, my eternal attempt at giving typesetting that ever-elusive handmade impression. Though the main shapes, especially the majuscules, are almost a standard recitation of the natural evolution of nineteenth century scripts, the additional variants available within the font provide a leap in time to what sign makers and packagers are doing today. I can honestly say that Storefront’s influences are probably less historic and more in line with my recent travels and frequent supermarket visits. It’s difficult to avoid current visual culture when you're constantly bombarded with it. Not that I try. I certainly welcome the overflow. I'm probably addicted to it by now. With a very cool aesthetic, plenty of alternates and swashes, extended Latin language support, Storefront is over a thousand glyphs for your branding, packaging, and sign making pleasure.

The Greek font started from an experiment with designing fonts based on a geometric grid. I joined the points on the grid with straight lines to form the various characters and found that this resulted in a font that closely resembled Greek writing (derived from inscriptions carved in stone) of ancient times. I continued to develop this theme but I now accentuated the look and feel of Greek writing. The three styles shown are the results of this development. I did not kern or letterspace the individual letters since this would have been out of character with the orignal Greek writing. This means that the font is mono-spaced. At a later stage I may produce more refined and "modern" versions of these fonts. Surprisingly, the Greek SCF styles are very readable. The font is fully professional in terms of its character set. It contains over 235 characters - (upper and lower case characters, punctuation, numerals, symbols and accented characters are present). In fact, it has all the accented characters used in the major European languages.

The master of the dancing brush, Angel Koziupa, and the node-obsessed perfectionist, Alejandro Paul, offer up another bucket of fun with Malambo. This time Koziupa allows his brush to jitter one whole millimeter, and Paul digitizes with two eyes instead of his usual three. Follow your heart, but consume an ounce of peroxide first. Full of energy and cheeky mischief, Malambo tells the eye amusing stories of mirrorless shaving accidents, wine mistakenly poured over the morning cereal, and someone who trips over his own shadow on the dance floor, yet keeps on dancing. And dancing is what this typeface is all about. Malambo is a traditional Argentine dance performed by the gauchos (the Argentine equivalent of 19th century North American cowboys?). The gauchos are still around in the less than touristic areas of Argentina. Recta was one of Aldo Novarese’s earliest contributions to the massive surge of the European sans serif genre that was booming in the middle of the 20th century. Initially published just one year after Neue Haas Grotesk came out of Switzerland and Univers out of France, and at a time when Akzidenz Grotesk and DIN were riding high in Germany and Gill Sans was making waves in Great Britain, it was intended to compete with all of those foundry faces, and later came to be known as the “Italian Helvetica”. It maintains traditional simplicity as its high point of functionality, while showing minimal infusion of humanistic traits. It shows that the construct of the grotesk does not have to be rigid, and can indeed have a touch of Italian flair. While the original Recta family lacked a proper suite of weights and widths, this digital version comes in five weights, corresponding italics, four condensed fonts, and small caps in four weights. It also includes a wide-ranging character set for extended Latin language support.

Linotype Mega is part of the Take Type Library, chosen from the entries of the Linotype-sponsored International Digital Type Design Contests of 1994 and 1997. The fun schrift of German designer Till F. Teenck is available in three weights whose names are word plays in themselves. Mega in (which we hope the font will be) contains relatively light, somewhat irregularly-drawn characters which look as though they were printed by hand and the characters are set rather far apart from each other. The Akko typeface family is the first new design from Akira Kobayashi in a very long time - and it is well worth the wait. Picture an industrial strength typeface like the Isonorm™ design. Now blend this with an organic design like the Cooper Black™ typeface. Magpie is a font family consisting of three sub-families with both regular and italic styles. Originally designed on squared paper, over time it has moved further and further away from this rigid grid, although its appearance is still based on it, so it can easily be used for logotypes or headlines with strict grid-based layouts. While Magpie Text is suitable for headlines and short texts, Magpie Display is ideal for logotypes or more playful headlines. Finally, Magpie Mix is a combination of both families. Magpie Text Regular represents stability, Magpie Display Italic is ideal for dynamic logos or headlines. To cover more languages, cyrillic and greek letters were added and Magpie can be used for nearly a hundred languages. In addition to the four common numeral variants, special numerals, punctuations and symbols for all-caps (c2sc) are included. Furthermore case-sensitive punctuations and symbols are available. To expand the typographic possibilities, four stylistic sets, different symbols, forms and standard- and discretionary ligatures have been added. Each Magpie-font contains more than 880 glyphs.

Kompakt is one of the early typefaces of type designer Hermann Zapf, whose Palatino has long been a standard in almost every area of application. Kompakt consists of a single weight and was designed in 1952, two years after Palatino. It was produced by the foundry D. Stempel AG in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, where Zapf was at the time in the artistic department. The figures of this extremely strong and heavy typeface are decidedly those of a broad tipped pen. When enlarged, the sharp outlines of the characters can be clearly seen. The unique dynamic of the alphabet is a result of its strong serifs, which on the lower case letters almost connect the letters in a line. Together with the slight slant to the right, this gives Kompakt the character of handwriting, making it look like it is always striving to go forward. Kompakt is an excellent choice for advertisements, especially for posters which should display a hint of nostalgia, and should be used only in headlines.

Philip Bouwsma's Symposium Pro is a wide Carolingian script that can be set simply or with a wide range of flourishes. It takes its inspiration from the scriptoria of the twelfth century, particularly in Spain, where Christians, Muslims and Jews lived harmoniously in a brilliant culture for two centuries. As manuscripts were translated and copied to meet the Western demand for classical texts, calligraphic elements from Arabic and Hebrew spread throughout Europe, sparking a proliferation of new styles that brought the simple book hand to a higher level. Symposium Pro spans a broad range of time and space, from the court of Charlemagne to the Arabian nights and Renaissance Florence. Symposium Pro comes in four weights, ranging from Light to Bold, with each font containing over 1200 glyphs. Variations on every letter form, from swashes to subtle alterations, are plenty, with some even having up to 40 alternates. Also plenty are the embedded ornaments and flourishes, over a hundred of them. Keep that glyph palette handy for many pleasant surprises and easy setting solutions.

Yes Dear is a hopefully humorous acknowledgement that men and women communicate differently — one of those Mars-Venus things. Women tend to talk about their feelings. Men hide in the cave. It sounds funny, but it can have serious consequences in people’s lives and their relationships. T. D. Jakes deals with the subject effectively in his DVD, He-Motions. We guys need to find our way out of the cave. Our women need to recognize what is going on and gently help us emerge from the cave. Men and women were certainly never meant to be identical, but it would be useful if we could learn to communicate our feelings in more healthy and effective ways. Yes Dear has a full character set, including accented caps. Two empty frames are provided at positions 135 & 137. The design of Futura seems to be timeless. This typeface family which had been developed in 1926 by Paul Renner for the Bauer Type Foundry in the style of constructivism and as part of the Bauhaus movement, experienced, however, in the course of the past 90 years, repeated time-appropriate revivals which guaranteed its on-going popularity. The version of the Futura EF Pro contains the original character constructions which Dennis Megaw described as the “first designs of Futura” in 1938 in “20th century sans serif types, Typography no. 7” (See: Dr. Christopher Burke: Paul Renner, Princeton Architectural Press, New York 1998). What makes it exceptional is the extension into three weights: “Text”, “Headline” and “Index” which came about as part of a degree dissertation at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste (HFBK) in Hamburg. In this context, the accompanying documentation “Die Kritik der reinen Futura” (“The Critique of the Pure Futura”) by Katharina Strauer was published by the Materialverlag, Hamburg, in 2003. Some copies are still available at Elsner+Flake.

The Ampersand Forest has its first book family! Budinger Oldstyle is elegant and approachable at the same time, with five different weights, making it a perfect choice for text or display in situations that require a hint of scholarship, fine arts, craft, erudition, and clarity. Budinger Oldstyle has the legibility of a Garalde (like those of Garamond, Manutius, et al.), with a whiff of Venetian revival (after the fashion of Schneidler & Goudy). The letters are arbitrary, with conventions like cupped serifs and leftward stress. It also has a higher x-height than might be expected, to give it an upright posture and openness in the counters. The italic is more compact, with more clearly calligraphic letterforms and conventions like Swash Caps. Its many features include OpenType alternates (a one-story a and g, and a K, R, and Q with elongated descenders), full and true small caps, both standard and discretionary ligatures, oldstyle and lining numerals, and Swash letterforms in the Italic (all capitals and descenders, plus the ascender of the d). Plus, the most adorable pudge of an ampersand you've ever seen!
