Kade is a display/semi display sans family of fonts based on vernacular lettering photographed over the last ten years in and around the harbors of Amsterdam and Rotterdam. Hence the name Kade that translates into English as ‘quay’, also the name of its designer. Kade grew slowly from many different ideas and elements. The letters reflects the industrial method in which they are cut for the side of ships from large steel plates. Frequently subtleties of curves are compromised due to the cutting tools and the fact engineers are in control. Kade’s italics have an experimental character and were produced in an unorthodox manner by rotating 8 degrees, rather than slanting the roman characters, a method sometimes employed in shipyards. Kade constructed character is ideal for contemporary editorial works, architecture magazines, museums communication and posters. The six distinct styles are published in OpenType format, featuring small caps and four sets of numbers (proportional old style, tabular old style, proportional lining and tabular lining), as well as matching currency symbols and a complete set of fractions.

Formosa is the old, colonial name for Taiwan. Formosa means beautiful in Portuguese and I think this handwritten typeface has a certain beauty itself. It comes in three styles, all of which make extensive use of ligatures, to give the font an authentic, handwritten feel. Like most of my fonts, Formosa comes with Babylonian language support.

Developed by Andrea Tartarelli as an extension to Calvino typefamily, Marcovaldo is a heavy condensed wedge serif, optimized for display design. The high contrast and rich texture of the old style letterforms marry digital aesthetics in a typeface that is at the same time impactful and refined, with its nod to the Elzevir and DeVinne tradition.

Avenue is an eleven font family with five synthesist serif faces, five humanist sans serif faces, and one old style face. It is designed as an extrememly versatile body copy set. There are many special dingbats for bullets, and so on. It has oldstyle numbers and the small caps versions have lining numbers and small caps numbers.

Venecian Old Face fonts had a strong influence on typeface design in the 1930s and 1940s in England. Such influence is evident in the font Electra, designed by William A. Dwiggins for Linotype in 1935. Electra combines its classic roots with the Zeitgeist of the 1930s, also displaying characteristics of the Bauhaus and Art Deco styles.

Based on Times New Roman of Monotype, 1932, by Stanley Morison and Victor Lardent, and other versions of Times. It has many characteristics of an Old Style serif faces; it was designed for better legibility in combination with good economy. Widely used in books and magazines, reports and office documents, and also for display and advertising.

Take Trails is a handcrafted script vintage font. The font uses rounded rough edges, inked style and has texture, so this script typeface gives a feel of vintage, classic, old, handmade looked-like. The process of the font design went through scanning and digitally carving, and the texture is well crafted and was carefully added in each character.

Zampichi simulates an old school video game or halftone print. Nine futuristic styles are delivered in gritty pixelated format. While working on a font based on Spencerian Script (a popular late 19th century handwriting style) we did some experimenting with original designs which created the general feel of Spencerian and brought to mind the spidery handwriting of old ladies and Dickensian clerks. For some time, Eric de Berranger had wanted to create a distressed typeface design - one that gave the appearance of antique printing and showed signs of wear, yet was still highly readable. He was busy designing a new face called Maxime, when an idea struck: I realized that I could use these lettershapes as the basis for my antique typeface," he says. The two faces ended up being designed in tandem. While ITC Oldbook clearly captures the flavor of aged, uneven and imperfect printing, it also meets de Berranger's goal of being exceptionally readable in text sizes. Beginning with well-drawn characters was the key, and these were carefully modeled into the distressed forms. "The process was more difficult than I originally thought," says de Berranger. "The antique letters had to be tested and modified several times to work correctly." ITC Oldbook elegantly simulates antique printing in both text and display sizes. The Richie™ typeface grew out of a lettering experiment inspired by the work of Czech type designer Oldrich Menhart (1897-1962). Menhart’s typefaces were primarily text designs with a strong personal calligraphic influence. Monotype Studio designer, Jim Ford, wondered what a display typeface from Menhart might look like, and began drawing bold script characters with a broad-tipped chisel marker. “It was a familiar but laborious exercise,” explains Ford, “I tried to achieve an authentic – yet controlled – randomness that would serve as the foundation of a typeface.” Ford first drew a large suite of characters using the marker. All the drawings were then carefully adjusted, and scanned. Ford then pieced together a typeface from the best versions of letters, and refined those further. The result is a rugged, somewhat eccentric and playful script built on an obvious hand-drawn foundation. In a world of smooth scripts, the Richie design is heavy, chunky and rough. Its hand-made feel and vigorous rhythm put the power of raw brush lettering into the typographer’s hands.
