Gene Gable is known to many graphic artists from his on-line column 'Scanning Around with Gene', which was on the Creative Pro website for a number of years, covering a variety of topics ranging from printing techniques to paper ephemera; water applied decals to lettering stencils. Gene has also been a great help in providing vintage source material to Jeff Levine, which resulted in many additional font designs. I work as a comic letterer for an Italian publisher. I created this font to write the Italian version of a Batman comic. We needed a style of writing that simulated imprecise handwriting that could change in letters and space. I didn't have one, so I decided to make one by myself. It is the first font created with criteria, and after having adjusted it, I propose it to you here. Valid for lettering comics, or for titles and graphic design when you need a simulated handwritten note, which is credible but still easy to manage.

I seem to be in my comic book font fase. It's not that I have tons of comics lying around (I actually have none), but when I was a kid, I used to read them all the time. Laser Eyes is a handmade comic book font. It is a little rounded, a little fat and very useful. You don't really have to put it to work in an actual comic book; it will feel at home just about anywhere. Friar Pro is a revival of Frederic W. Goudy's "Friar" typeface. Glitzy is a caps-only font with extreme contrast. It was inspired by Art Deco typefaces, especially Broadway by Morris Fuller Benton, but Glitzy is not an attempt to reproduce that typeface. The letters on the lower-case keys differ slightly from the letters on the upper-case keys. The large black interiors invite decoration and the family includes four faces with interior decoration. These four faces with interior decoration can be used in layers with the base font to add color to lettering. (OakPark is a another attempt to do high-contrast lettering with an Art Deco feel.)

Neumatic Gothic Round is a condensed sans-serif family. It has a tall Cap Height as well as x-height to balance it. Neumatic Gothic Round is versatile in use as a Headline font or as a text font. Neumatic Gothic Round has loads of options to play around with. Included in the glyph set are small caps, a stylistic uppercase superscript, stylistic alternates and circled numbers to name some. Heartsome is a ‘forgotten’ word. It was mostly used in Scotland and it means: ‘giving cheer, spirit or courage’. I had never heard of it, but I thought it deserved a second chance, so I named this font Heartsome! Heartsome is a handmade Didone; I used a brand new bottle of Chinese ink and a brand new synthetic pencil to paint the glyphs. Brand new, because all of my drawing materials seem to have evaporated when we moved into our new house… A synthetic brush, because I don’t want animals to suffer because I feel the need to create fonts.

Indenture English Penman is based on research into original English and American indenture contracts from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, mostly with roundhand scripts, paragraph versals in Old English script and many, many flourishes. This font has a little of everything, with hundreds of glyphs: dozens of versals to each alphabet letter, some versals in Old English style, plus flourishes to use at beginnings of paragraphs or chapters, and many additional flourishes to create perfect ancient documents. Kaikoura is a small town on the east coast of the South Island of New Zealand. It is a very pleasant, laid-back place where the mountains meet the sea. Kaikoura is also the best place in the world to spot sperm whales. Kaikoura font is quite similar in appearance: it is laid-back and beautiful, has sharp peaks and generous curves. I am still trying to find out how to add whale watching to this description… Kaikoura is an all caps font with a lower case alternative for the o and y. It comes with an ocean of diacritics.

The font is largely undesigned, but is bound together by a thick connected band which forms the word-blocks. At the same time, parts of Urbanregent are very designed, glyphs have been re-designed to reflect changes in the way we speak and write. The exclamation mark is louder and more manic, because people tend to write two or three exclamation marks after each other anyway. The full stop is more stopping and the hyphen kicks you on to the next word. Kenn Munk's fonts are generally hard to use - Urbanregent is no exception, but a tip would be to start each word with a capital letter. Because Every Word Is Important.
