Handwriting fonts have a great disadvantage when it comes to double letters: they look fake. With Palma come loads of ligatures for double letters to make your design look authentic (as shown on the image above).

The Handel Gothic? typeface has been a mainstay of graphic communication for over 40 years - all the while looking as current as tomorrow. Designed by Don Handel in the mid-1960s, and used in the 1973 United Airlines logo developed by Saul Bass, Handel Gothic was an instant success when released to the graphic design community. Its generous lowercase x-height, full-bodied counters and square proportions make the design highly readable at a wide range of sizes. Handel Gothic's slightly idiosyncratic character shapes gave the face a futuristic look 40 years ago that retains its power today. In addition, its Uncial-like lowercase is instantly identifiable - and unique among sans serif typestyles. Award-winning type designer Rod McDonald was attracted to the simple, decisive forms of the original, but he felt the design needed to be refined and updated. ?One of my goals was to bring a modern typographic discipline to what was really an old phototypesetting font.? To achieve his goal, McDonald re-proportioned every character and balanced the delicate relationship between the curves and the straight strokes. He also added a number of alternate characters to extend the range of the design. ?I wanted to give designers a large enough character set so they wouldn't feel constrained in what they could do. I want them to be able to play with the fonts, not just set words.? McDonald enlarged the family from the single-weight original to five weights, each with a full suite of alternate characters.In 2015 Nadine Chahine designed matching arabic weights to this family.

Caltic-Holiday, Caltic-Festival, and Caltic-Straight are three eye-catching, very bold typefaces that are suitable for posters and signage. Caltic-Holiday and Caltic-Festival base letter shapes on trapezoids with curved sides but with curves that are reversed going from one to the other. Caltic-Straight has letters based on trapezoids with straight sides. None are suited for text and with their built-in spacing will not work as all upper-case or all lower-case. All three come in two widths, regular and wide, giving the Caltic family six members. Caltic has nothing to do with Celts. The Calt refers to the calt or contextual alternative OpenType feature that makes this typeface work. When the letters on the upper-case keys alternate with the letters on the lower-case keys, they fit snuggly together. As long as the user has a word processor that supports the contextual alternatives feature, there is no need for the user to alternate letters; the calt feature does it automatically. Although the fonts seem similar to hand-drawn lettering that was done on posters and signs during the hippie era of the 1960s and 1970s, I can find nothing quite like them. My inspiration for them is older, in a newspaper from 1932 that led to the typeface family PoultySign. Caltic (and Lentzers) are the result of seeing what else I could do with the inspiration that sprang from that 1932 newspaper.

This set of initial decorated letters was inspired by a font in use in the beginning of 1500s in Paris. Exactly, we have used the set that Barthélémy Verand employed for the printing of Triumphus translatez de langage Tuscan en François, (from “Triumph” of Petrarque) in the year 1514. Some letters, lacked, have been reconstructed to propose a complete alphabet. It appears that the printer used some letters to replace others, as V, turned over to make a A, or D to make a Q. The original font’s letters were drawn in white on a black background only, but it was tempting to propose a negative version in black on white. It is used as variously as web-site titles, posters and flyers design, publishing texts looking like ancient ones, or greeting cards, all various sorts of presentations, as a very decorative, elegant and luxurious additional font. This font supports strong enlargements remaining very smart and fine. It’s original medieval hight is about one inch equivalent to about four lines of characters. This font may be used with all blackletter fonts, but works particularly well with 1543 Humane Jenson, 1557 Italic and 1742 Civilite, without any anachronism.

I thought it would take me a week or two; to get the detail and spirit right took significantly longer– but it was well worth the effort! Modulario is a geometric sans with some disturbingly individual features. A few capitals owe a bit too much to Roman proportions. The circular O serves to distinguish it from the zero, and the luxuriously wide W and M are both pointed in the middle, although alternatives to the more contentious letters are available within the font. The lowercase shows a little more handwriting influence than is customary – we are used to seeing a writing-style curve at the base of the l, Modulario extends the influence to the i and a, and also sports a uniquely scripty s.

Omnibus is one of my absolute favourites. My intention was to design a typeface as easy to read as Baskerville, without being a copy of it. It is easy to see that I was influenced by Baskerville, e.g. in the open lowercase g. I had in mind to design a Baskerville with the looks of the Baskervilles used in earlier typesetting. I put aside those plans for a while (but fulfilled them later on) and dedicated myself to Omnibus. In both cases my aim was to achieve a typeface with darker looks than the most used Baskerville. The name has nothing to do with buses, it is Latin with the meaning of for all". It is also in the name of Omnibus Typografi. Omnibus was released in 1993.

Julia Child once said: the secret to great french cooking is butter, butter, butter. Thus, we present to you Manteiga - butter in Portuguese! - a typeface for heart-melting, word-spreading goodness. The idea we had was to play with brush lettering - a style we love - and go as far as we can with the shapes of the letters while finding balance between positive and negative space. We wanted biiiig personality. And small inconsistencies - the ones that add texture and life to lettering. We left extensive OpenType features and technical stuff aside for a moment, adding later only what we thought was necessary, like different shapes for the Q, a and g - for example. All caps setting was something we wanted from the beginning. In text case, the x-height is rather short for a brush script, and this lends a quirky voice. Spacing is ultra tiiiiight so don’t go too small, but make it as big as you want! Ah! And there are some fun dingbats thrown in for good measure.

Chancery Lane is a condensed cursive with a breezy, flowing feel. Many of the lowercase characters join up, some uppercase ones too, and the two fonts are slantier than many other chancery-inspired faces, inclined at almost 20°. Each glyph has slightly rounded corners to bestow softness and warmth. The typeface emerged from a study of pen lettering, italic scripts and chancery hands – down a rabbit hole and along the Chancery Lane. The research ranged from early cancellaresca manuscripts to contemporary fonts, and also calligraphic work, most notably that of Indian artist Mayank Baranwal whose lowercase letters inspired many of the Chancery Lane glyphs. Uppercase characters have been designed to harmonise with the lowercase rather than providing overly ornamental openers, true to origins that were functional rather than fancy. Both the capitals and the uppercase alternates are unfussy and relatively simple, and the lowercase swash characters are similarly understated, only modestly flourished. Stylistic alternates and lowercase swash characters can be accessed using OpenType-aware applications or font management software.

OMG! I never thought I'd finish this font! Actually, the idea came to me in the late 1990-ies, but the sketches lied at the bottom of the "fonts I will complete one day In the future" pile ... also called "fonts I most likely won't complete...EVER" pile! :) Anyway, I started up with letters for both upper and lowercase, no numbers or punctuation. I figured if people ever purchased this font, all they would need were upper- or lowercase letters. But the rest of the glyphs seemed to miss out, so I made the numbers and some punctuation. But I still found the font incomplete...therefore I redid all the punctuation (from "standard" punctuation to "picturish" punctuation) and added two additional sets of letters. Meaning that there is 4 different versions of letters to choose from: 2 different lowercase, and 2 different lowercase. I had a lot of fun drawing this font, and some fun doing the detective work finding out how the MANY lettershapes should look! I hop you too have fun using this font! :)

The Yasmine Mutlaq type family follows the guidelines of the Mutamathil Mutlaq type style. It has one glyph per basic Arabic Unicode character or letter. Each glyph is completely symmetrical around its vertical axis to facilitate bi-directional ordering. This family does not include any required ligatures and does not use glyph substitutions or forming but it does use marks positioning. Ares is a crisp all-caps display typeface suitable for sci-fi logos and titles. It owes its peculiar futuristic vibe to angular, top-heavy letters that hang from the cap-height instead of sitting on the baseline. The typeface consists of six subfamilies available in 10 weights, as well as as two variable fonts of three axes: Weight [wght], ranging from 1 to 1000, Mid-height [MHGT], ranginf from 0 to 1000, Tracking [TRAK], ranging from 0 to -40. The mid-height axis affects the typeface's waistline, including crossbars, and divides the fonts into three subfamilies: Ares Lo, Ares, and Ares Hi. These three families are solid-stroked, and the other three families are their stencil-stylized counterparts: Ares Broken Hi, Ares Broken, and Ares Broken Lo. The tracking axis is only available in the variable versions, and proportionally affects the kerning, thus helping set the type more tightly without effort. Ares supports a wide range of Latin-based orthographies, including not only European, but also Vietnamese as well as major African languages like Hausa, Fula or Ewe.

A tessellation is a shape that can be used to completely fill the plane without gaps or overlaps—simple examples are isosceles triangles, squares, and hexagons. Tessellation patterns are eye-catching and visually appealing, which is the reason that they have long been popular in a variety of decorative situations. TessieSomeMore has two family members, a solid style that must have different colors to be useful and an outline style. They can be used separately or they can be used in layers with the outline style on top of the solid style. For rows to align properly, leading must be the same as point size. Most of the shapes in TessieSomeMore are Escher-like. Over half are either bug-like and bird-like shapes. There are also a few animal and other object shapes as well as some geometric or abstract shapes that have visual appeal.

Lycia (Lycian: 𐊗𐊕𐊐𐊎𐊆𐊖 Trm̃mis; Greek: Λυκία, Lykia; Turkish: Likya) was a geopolitical region in Anatolia in what are now the provinces of Antalya and Muğla on the southern coast of Turkey, bordering the Mediterranean Sea, and Burdur Province inland. Known to history since the records of ancient Egypt and the Hittite Empire in the Late Bronze Age, it was populated by speakers of the Luwian language group. Written records began to be inscribed in stone in the Lycian language (a later form of Luwian) after Lycia's involuntary incorporation into the Achaemenid Empire in the Iron Age. At that time (546 BC) the Luwian speakers were decimated, and Lycia received an influx of Persian speakers. Ancient sources seem to indicate that an older name of the region was Alope (Ancient Greek: Ἀλόπη, Alópē). Lycia fought for the Persians in the Persian Wars, but on the defeat of the Achaemenid Empire by the Greeks, it became intermittently a free agent. After a brief membership in the Athenian Empire, it seceded and became independent (its treaty with Athens had omitted the usual non-secession clause), was under the Persians again, revolted again, was conquered by Mausolus of Caria, returned to the Persians, and finally fell under Macedonian hegemony upon the defeat of the Persians by Alexander the Great. Due to the influx of Greek speakers and the sparsity of the remaining Lycian speakers, Lycia was rapidly Hellenized under the Macedonians, and the Lycian language disappeared from inscriptions and coinage.

Strikt is a variable modular font family with 2 axes, build on a 3x3 grid. It was designed by Peter Bushuev and released in August of 2020. It was inspired by the idea of utilizing the variable font technology to make a font with build-in animation potential. Strikt has 2 variable axes: weight and animation. The first one is self-explanatory, but the animation axis is the main feature of the font. It allows you to morph any glyph to a 3x3 dot array and back. In Strikt Plus modification, this array is the same for each letter, which gives the possibility to transform one glyph to the other. Strikt is also a very sturdy and unique display font. Éric de Berranger likes to multitask, and often works on two typeface families at once. Such was the case with Mosquito, a jaunty sans that was developed at the same time he was creating the more traditional Maxime. Mosquito represented a sort of recreation," says de Berranger. "When I grew tired of working on one design I could work on the other and then come back to the first, full of courage and desire!" Mosquito is built from simple, straightforward shapes, but its distinctive stroke terminals and slight oblique weight stress distinguish the design from more conventional sans serif faces. The relatively large x-height and open counters add to the legibility of the design.
