Giambattista Bodoni (1740-1813) was called the King of Printers; he was a prolific type designer, a masterful engraver of punches and the most widely admired printer of his time. His books and typefaces were created during the 45 years he was the director of the fine press and publishing house of the Duke of Parma in Italy. He produced the best of what are known as modern" style types, basing them on the finest writing of his time. Modern types represented the ultimate typographic development of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. They have characteristics quite different from the types that preceded them; such as extreme vertical stress, fine hairlines contrasted by bold main strokes, and very subtle, almost non-existent bracketing of sharply defined hairline serifs. Bodoni saw this style as beautiful and harmonious-the natural result of writing done with a well-cut pen, and the look was fashionable and admired. Other punchcutters, such as the Didot family (1689-1853) in France, and J. E. Walbaum (1768-1839) in Germany made their own versions of the modern faces. Even though some nineteenth century critics turned up their noses and called such types shattering and chilly, today the Bodoni moderns are seen in much the same light as they were in his own time. When used with care, the Bodoni types are both romantic and elegant, with a presence that adds tasteful sparkle to headlines and advertising. Parma was designed by the monotype Design Team after studying Bodoni's steel punches at the Museo Bodoniana in Parma, Italy. They also referred to specimens from the "Manuale Tipografico," a monumental collection of Bodoni's work published by his widow in 1818.

Online auctions continue to be a surprising wealth of font design inspiration. In this instance, a number of silk embroidered Art Deco initials inside inverted triangles inspired Deco Pennant Initials JNL. The uppercase version is white lettering on a black background – similar to the originals. On the lowercase keys is a set of initials that are black on white with a black border. Since the inverted triangles resemble pennants, there’s a solid black blank on the left parenthesis key and a outlined blank one on the right parenthesis key. In this way, the initials could be used for monograms or interspersed with the blanks to form short banner messages.

Afronaut PRO (New version of typeface published in 2019) was inspired by vernacular Latin & Arabic typography in St. Louis (on Senegal-Mauretania Border, Africa). Geometric forms working well and contrasting with smooth, round elements. After reading "Afronautics – from Zambia to the Moon" by Bartek Sabela (about Zambian conquest of space) a breif was set to create typeface that looks like mix between: vernacular Arabic script, futuristic typography and some special lettering that I found in Africa during my travels to Guinée, Bissau, Gambia, Senegal, Mauritania and West Sahara. Indoo is a modular geometric design that owes much to the typeface designs of Theo van Doesburg (1883-1931) and the De Stijl principles of abstraction, simplicity, clarity and harmony. That inspiration, combined with the lettering of signage often found in the Indian quarter of Paris, led to the connecting block letter motif of Indoo. The name Moreske, Maureske, Morisca, Morisco comes from Spanish “Mauritanian”. This ornament is based on the greenery motif with strongly stylized stems and leaves fancifully interlacing. A flower became crushed in the door frame of the studio (a fancy shed at the end of an overgrown garden)... pretty pale yellow stamens scattered on the floor... I sprinkled some on the scanner and arranged them into a light and airy font for springtime. There are two alphabets, both uppercase, but one with doubled uprights for variety, and to provide a hint of extra weight. I didn't want to distort the natural shapes, or make up any of my own, so some letterforms are pretty quirky, and some characters just weren't possible... but there's a hidden bunch of flowery and grassy ornaments.

Blackletter typefaces follow certain fixed rules, both in respect to their forms and to the orthography. Possibly, they were a reaction to the half-developed Carolingian minuscule which was soon to end in the Latin script. Narrow, ordered script was to replace the round, hesitant and shattered shapes of letters in order to simplify writing, to unify the meaning of individual letters, and to save some parchment, too. Opposed to the practice common in monasterial scriptoriums where Uncial, Irish and Carolingian inspiration flew freely and as a result, the styles of writing differed in each monastery, the blackletter type was to define one, common standard. It was to express spiritual verticality, in perfect tune with the architecture of the Gothic era. Typography became an integral part of the overall style of the period. The pointed arch and the blackletter type were the vanguard of the spectacular transformation from the Middle Ages towards the modern era, they were a celebration of a time when works of art were not signed by their makers yet. Some unfortunate souls keep linking blackletter solely with Germany and the Third Reich, while the truth is that its direct predecessor, the Gothic minuscule, evolved mostly in France. Even Hitler himself indicated blackletter type obsolete in the age of steel, iron and concrete – thus making a significant contribution to the spreading of the Latin script in Germany. Once we leave our prejudice aside, we find that the shapes of blackletter type have exceptional potential, unheard of in sans-serif letterforms. The lower case letters fit into an imaginary rectangle which is easily extended both upwards and sideways. In its scope and in the name itself, the Moyenage type family project is to celebrate the diversity of the Middle Ages. I begun realizing the urge to design my own blackletter when visiting the beer gardens of Munich and while walking through the villages of rural Austria. The letters from the notice boards of inns are scented with spring air, with the flowers of cudweed, with white sausage and weissbier. The crooked calligraphic hooks and beaks seem to imitate the hearty yodeling of local drinkers and the rustle of the giant skirts of girls who distribute the giant wreaths of beer jugs. Moyenage is, however, a modern replica of blackletter, so it contains some otherwise unacceptable Latin script elements in upper case. I chose these keeping the modern reader in mind, striving for better legibility. The font is drawn as if written with a flat pen or brush, and with the ambition to, perhaps, serve as a calligraphic model. In medium width, the face is surprisingly well legible; it is perfect for menus as well as posters and CD covers for some of the heavier kinds of music. It has five types of numerals and also a set of Cyrillic script, symbolising the lovelorn union of Germans and Russians in the 20th century. Thus, it is well suited for the setting of bilingual texts of the German classic literature, which, according to the ancient rules, must not be set in Latin script.

The Tang family came to be, when I started studying fonts made for use in very small point sizes, like Bell Gothic. I studied the use of ink traps and went to town with them. Instead of just using them for their purpose: trapping ink to prevent the type getting blotted; I used them as a design feature. With those features Tang works very well in both headline and text use. I use it as a house type, and I've already seen it in a beer and cider labels.

Sungarden is a bouquet of about 400 handmade pics and floral ornaments, created to get along well with my collection of 12 playful sans serifs and a cute script. Sungarden Script is packed with ligatures and automatic initial and terminal forms accessed through contextual altrenates. All the fonts have an extended character set to support Western and Central European languages. The Sungarden family is well-suited for nature cosmetics, organic food, handmade-style products, wedding and greeting cards, invitations, labels, packaging, menus, books or apparel. Grande Jatte is a display face with a distinctly horticultural bent. Based on classic Engravers types, its wide proportions and leafy appurtenances make it a great choice for anything that requires an ornate, elegant take on the natural world, from floral shops to herbalists to garden party invitations! Grande Jatte's standard form is an elaborate, open, Leafy design with lots of decorative features for large display use, plus a more functional, Solid design for more legible, ancillary text! Grande Jatte's features include elaborate initial capitals (under the Swash Caps feature), initial and final letterforms in the capitals, a second, more elaborate set of capitals (SS01 feature), and true small caps. This style mimics the flare or upward fade that comes with the use of a spray paint can, as the tops of the letters flare, and become wider. An original font style, named after the border town of Mexicali, this font style falls under the larger umbrella of what is called Cholo-graffiti style. Originally from New Jersey, MENE has made his home in, New York City. He had a brief albeit satisfying career of street bombing in the late 90s that saw its end with a brief encounter with the Vandal Squad. Now a family man, Mene has dedicated himself to the preservation and education of style in its many forms.

Toothpaste Two is a reworking of Toothpaste . The new font has all the features of the original Toothpaste, but is now even crazier, with the line twisting and turning over and under itself, making a tangled string of text bordering on the edge of legibility. As in Toothpaste, every letter and number connects and there are numerous contextual alternates and ligatures to keep it all running smoothly. This is a fun, decorative font. It would look good on kids' websites, scrapbooks, party invitations and the like. It works best in brighter colors on darker backgrounds, which give the characters a neon light quality. Also, try it with a stroke for a cool cartoony effect.
