Hasan Ghada is an Arabic display typeface. It is useful for titles and graphic projects. The font is based on the simple lines of Modern Kufi calligraphy with new ideas for square shapes and geometric feel. It supports Arabic, Persian and Urdu. This font was designed in 2002 and the first version was released under name KactTitle in the typefaces group of King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST), which supported the Linux operation system. In 2007, I developed this font and created five weights of it.

Sébastien Truchet designed a modular typographic system during his last year in the School of Fine Arts of Besançon. The system is made of a unique grid and 6 modules which are the components to build several typefaces. The most radical is the "2-2". The last one is the "10-12". This is the 4-4. It is built into a square grid. Four modules in width and in height. This font proposes to you two appearances : the caps are blackest and the small letters are more open.

Tertre is a display/short text typeface with a wide range of applications from signage or posters to menus and pricelists; branding, packaging or publishing. It is named after Place du Tertre, a square located at the top of Montmartre—a hill overlooking Paris, made famous by the artists of the 19th and 20th Century. Like in Galette, the letters have no overhangs and the stroke thickness of capitals and lower case letters is identical, making hinting or anti-aliasing more uniform at any point size and zoom combination.

Newgrange is a distinctive Celtic-style font designed as a companion to our Stonecross font. It has the same size and weight as Stonecross and the same carved/chipped style, but rather than being based on traditional insular minuscule letter forms, it's based on a squared uncial style similar to our Lindisfarne font. The result is unusual and rather more modern looking than we expected, but it's great for stylized titles. The name comes from the giant prehistoric stone tomb at Newgrange which some have called Ireland's answer to Stonehenge.

This square serif typeface is a real workhorse. It is a modern tool for text design: extremely legible, pan-european multilingual (Latin, Greek and Cyrillic), well shaped. Bandera Pro has six weights with original italics, alternatives, small capitals and three sets of digits. It catches attention in headlines of posters and magazines or makes reading comfortable in plain texts. The title on the cover of Street & Smith’s “Wild West Weekly” for Jan. 27, 1934 made for an interesting contrast in terms. Here was a pulp magazine dedicated to stories of the Old West, but its title was hand lettered in an extra bold, squared shape style using a round pen nib – not exactly an alphabet that represented cowboys and desperados… This aside, this type style made for a good digital font revival, and it is now available as Bold Pen Lettering JNL in both regular and oblique versions.

Linotype Fresh Ewka is part of the Take Type Library, chosen from the contestants of Linotype’s International Digital Type Design Contests of 1994 and 1997. This fun font was designed by Polish artist Dariusz Nowak-Nova and each letter seems to be a work in itself. The fine hair lines are decorated with tiny squares and look like wires with nodes while the thicker strokes have indefinite contours and seem to have been made with a thick brush. Linotype Fresh Ewka is suitable for headlines in large point sizes.

The 1930 Geneva Motor Show (Salon International De l'Automobile Et Du Cycle) showcased a lot of new cars, but one item in particular took my interest: the amazing art deco poster announcing the show. Lokomotiv font was based on this poster. It is a very deco-ish font, futuristic, angular, with bold squares, rounds and triangles. As I had to work with just a handful of glyphs, and needed to fill an entire font, I made up the missing ones myself. Lokomotiv, by the way, is German for Locomotive.

This variation of Tangential (see also the Standard & Semi Serif variants) continues with the angles that give the typeface its name; however, the square terminals are half-rounded to create a softer and slightly more fluid styling. The Tangential style I envisaged for the family is complemented by the prominent use of negative space throughout, most apparent on the drop-shaped ‘o,’ which is a key feature of the typeface and a letterform I'm particularly pleased with. Available in 2 weights, Regular & Bold, in both OpenType OTF & TrueType TTF formats.

Spekulatus is a made up name, and that was what I needed for a font like this. I am not sure which category it fits in: grunge, square, handmade, rough or maybe even graffiti? Well, let's just say that it fits in all 5 - or perhaps even more? All letters are handdrawn, and messed up a bit with a thin fine white liner, leaving a gentle grungy and worn effect. I've added 5 different versions of each letter, which is quite nice - not having the same letters repeating all the time!

The French publication “La Lettre Dans le Decor et La Publicite Modernes” (“The Letter in the Modern Décor and Advertising”) was a 24-page booklet showcasing the then-current trends of the time (circa late 1930s-early 1940s). On one page was found a squared, extra bold sans serif alphabet set with strong Art Nouveau influences, yet it was ahead of its time by taking on the look and feel of 1980s techno typography. They say “everything old is new again”, and Nouveau Techno JNL is now available digitally in both regular and oblique versions.

The Quandary Font is created for a horror theme in use with an illustrated book ‘The Predicament’ by Edgar Allan Poe. It is designed as a highly expressive face to accentuate a sense of mystery and the macabre. LTC Italian Old Style is not to be confused with the English Monotype font also called Italian Old Style, which is an earlier design from 1911 based on William Morris’s Golden Type that is based on Nicholas Jenson’s Roman face. Goudy went back to Jenson’s original Roman and other Renaissance Roman faces for his inspiration and the result is what many consider to be the best Renaissance face adapted for modern use. Bruce Rogers was one of the biggest admirers of Italian Old Style and designed the original specimen book for Italian Old Style in 1924 using his trademark ornament arrangement. These ornaments are now contained in the pro versions of the Roman styles—Regular Pro and Light Pro. With most digitizations of old metal typefaces, one source size is often used as reference (as was Goudy’s method for his own cuttings of his Village foundry types) so that all sizes refer to one set of original artwork. The original hot metal fonts made by Lanston Monotype (from Goudy’s drawings) and other manufacturers used two or three masters for different size ranges to have optimal relative weights—smaller type sizes would need proportionally thicker lines to not appear thin and larger sizes would require thinner lines to not appear to bulky. The variations in size ranges can also be affected by the size of the cutter head in making the master patterns. The light weights of LTC Italian Old Style were digitized from larger display sizes (14, 18, 24, 30, 36 pt) and the regular weights were digitized from smaller composition sizes (8,10,12 pt). The fitting for the regular weights is noticeably looser to allow for better setting at small sizes. Very few font revivals take this approach. Italian Old Style, originally designed by Frederic Goudy in 1924, was digitized by Paul Hunt in 2007. In 2013, it has been updated by James Grieshaber and is now offered as a Pro font. The newly expanded Pro font includes all of the original ligatures, plus small caps and expanded language coverage in all 4 Pro styles.

Weaving is a family in which the letters fit together so that wavy lines separate them both horizontally and vertically. It creates this effect by alternating letters on upper-case keys with those on lower-case letters and this alternating is done automatically in applications that support the OpenType feature of contextual alternatives (calt). (The upper-case can be used alone but it unlikely that the lower-case characters could be used by themselves.) The family is a thinner and condensed version of the typeface Woven, but in condensing it, the tessellation properties that a were in Woven are lost. It is a decorative display face but because there are few typefaces similar to it, it is hard to predict what uses it may have. Be creative!

Shablon is a Stencil style serif typeface. The purpose of this monospace font is to display braille in an original although rather steganographic way. Its glyphs are built from a flat hexagon which can be read as 3 rows of 2 vertices (i.e. regular braille glyph grid). The initial design is illustrated by glyphs 'ç' (no dot) and 'û' (6 dots) as shown by poster 5. Glyphs are connected to each other, thus 6 connections for each hexagon (2 on left/right and 4 on top/bottom). In the final design many diagonal segments of the hexagon were removed for esthetical reason. Text is displayed not as a honeycomb but as a lattice instead which mixes hexagons, squares and "irregular convex octagons" (mostly unclosed), the design favored squares over octagons. The whole slightly resembling a PCB. Text can be framed with 3 sets of Frame glyphs (as shown in Poster 4): Octagonal: { €, °, £, µ, §, ¥, ~, ¢ } which can be mixed with Rectangular High Rectangular Low: { è, é, ê, ï, î, à, â, ä } Rectangular High: { Â, ù, Ä, Ê, Ë, ô, õ, ë } which can be mixed with Octagonal NB: When using Frame glyphs, it is advised to show Pilcrow (¶) and Non Breaking Space, which are replaced by empty shapes (e.g. in Microsoft Word, use CTRL+8 or use [¶] button in the ribbon).
