I’m a bit of a sucker for neon lights, especially in big cities. My favourite city is Tokyo, with its brightly coloured billboards and its back alleys full of neon-lit eateries. At first sight, Neon Goo is a slightly warped font, with some funny looking glyphs and a generous spacing. When you start using it, you’ll find out that the glyphs do complement each other! Neon Goo comes with all diacritics and a set of alternates for the lower case letters.

BlackWhite is a titling typeface created by Ferdinay Duman in 1989 styled after the designs of the late 1980s. Like the name says, the figures emphasizes the play between dark and light. To this end, most inner spaces have been deleted. The constructed outlines of the robust figures draw the attention. In some weights, Duman split the figures horizontally, giving them a unique look. The technical and mechanical BlackWhite is perfect for generous headlines on fliers or in trendy magazines.

Dynasty is an extensive and versatile family that exploration and modernisation of the typographic quirks associated with the 'American Gothic' type school (in much the same way as English Grotesque was an exploration of Gill/Johnston idea-space) and adds chamfered elements to dots and tails to emphasise and extend the early machine-made aesthetic. Elegantly clean and readable at headline and small text settings, where (as with all fonts in small sizes) the introduction of tracking will improve legibility.

Creepy...crumbly...spooky... that's Terror JNL. Originally an experimental outline font made in the early days of Jeff Levine's typographic work, it's been revised and properly spaced for the design professional. The font is based on Ray Larabie's 1990's freeware release Foo - and a hand-traced, weathered-look was applied to the letter shapes. There's no kerning and a limited character set - but Terror JNL is still perfect for any headline that depicts "things that go bump in the night"...

ITC Belter was designed by Andreu Balius in 1996. Out of a purposely limited form repertoire Balius created a constructed typeface with a cool and technical character. A distinguishing characteristic of this font is the cross at the ends of many strokes. The figures seem to be products of mass production, which heightens the mechanical feel of the font. Belter is meant for point sizes of 10 and larger in headlines and shorter texts and must be set with generous spacing.

BeneCryptine is not based on any particular calligraphic type style. It has exaggerated upper-case letters and hyperactive lower-case letters that give it a wild and undisciplined look. It comes in four styles: the base style, a decayed variant, a shadowed style, and a final style that looks much like the base style but which has the spacing of the shadowed style. This last style can be layered with the shadowed style to easily create lettering with two colors.

Amongst some pages scanned and posted online of old wood type alphabets comes this lovely, ornamental design in a reversed style of white lettering on black rectangular boxes. Since the release of Wood Bonnet Grotesque No.4 the font became popular for packaging and adverts. But the font styles were limited to one worn and one clean font in a medium weight only. Bonnet Grotesque Nr [Narrow] will fill this gap. It’s based on Wood Bonnet Grotesque No.4 but slightly modernized with sharp corners. Some letters need more space now – so tracking is not the same. The font was developed as a part of a corporate identity project for a pillow shop on the base of existing logo. It’s an attempt to reflect the space of a dream -- virtual reality where objects don’t have solid shapes, but present just hardly noticed disappearing contours. This idea determines the design of letters that resemble illustrations rather then alphabetical symbols and are based on ultra thin stems. The font was designed by Elena Kolesnikova and released by ParaType in 2009.

Changa is a layered font intended for titles or short texts blocks, with its short ascenders and descenders and a set of lowercase letters inscribed within a square. An interpretation of the lettering of contemporary illustrator Amanda Duffy. Each font contains four glyphs for each character (including all numbers, punctuation, and symbols), which OpenType coding sets in “random” order for a subtle, natural effect. Use a curved path to further accentuate the bounced quality of the letters. Try out different combinations of glyphs by inserting the cursor in front of your headline and hitting the space bar repeatedly: each time,the text will be represented by a different sequence of glyphs.

Impresssionable JNL is a font created from samples printed from a vintage rubber stamp toy set. This is a limited character design without spacing or kerning in order to preserve the hand-made look of inkpad printing on paper. A few extra punctuation glyphs, a percent sign and Euro were added to the original characters. Edits and Credits JNL is a cheerful sans serif typeface modeled from ceramic letters in a movie titling set from the late 40s or early 1950s. In the original kit, letters would be lined up accordingly against a contrasting background and photographed for home or professional movie and slide titles. Note: The cap height is slightly smaller than normal for the respective point size. This will give the effect of wider line spacing - similar to that of home movie titles.

Rebnick is a sans serif typeface where in the early design process, the adjacent stems and bars weren’t weld seamlessly and perfectly. You can actually find glitches which were carefully transformed into a custom language in it’s own and later became the coherent generic rule that keeps everything together. In display sizes, the ink traps give the font’s own character, while in small text sizes they create a good legibility and a well-balanced ratio between the black and white spaces.

Inspired by late 18th century type specimens, Saltpetre is a grounded yet rustic typeface. His letters have been hand-inked with antique dip pens and playfully spaced for a charming, irregular look. In addition to a set of 26 upper case letters, the font includes a variety of period graphics, interlocking decorative borders, numerals, punctuation, currency figures and multi-lingual support. Some words from the designer... The bold, playful element is everything in ITC Surfboard. West coast designer Teri Kahan was inspired by California's surfing lifestyle, and the letters of this alphabet dance along the writing line. The vitality of ITC Surfboard comes from the tension between its very free shapes and the precise edges and angles that create them. This all-capital font has deliberately tight spacing and works best in large sizes. Also included are fun, abstract surf/sail graphics.

The original superellipse typefaces coincided with the emergence of the CRT (cathode ray tube) TV screen, but there is more than this visual analogy of high-tech in play, as the pumped up angularity of the curved components of the genre also informs the quality of set text. In particular, due to the straightness of the round letters’ side stems, there is a neat modularity of vertical letter spacing, which denotes authority, with precision, complementing the tautness of the face’s curves.

“Tsubu” (つぶ) means something small and round, like a fruit seed or a grain of rice in Japanese. All characters are completely geometric, consisting of no more than 5 x 12 dots, with a few exceptions. And proportional and monospace styles are available. It is recommended that letter spacing be set to 0 to maintain dot pitch. When the line height is set to 100%, the dot pitch is aligned horizontally and vertically, resulting in a beautiful geometric display.
