Flagellum Dei is Latin for ‘The Scourge of God’. It is a title given by later generations to Attila the Hun (406-453 C.E.). Flagellum Dei is also a rather scary font, which I made with the use of a stiff brush and some China ink. Of course you could use this quite versatile font to scare the bejesus out of your friends, but I’d much rather see it used on book covers, posters and album artwork. Flagellum Dei comes with a horde of diacritics.

The Artful Dodger is a character in Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist. Dickens wrote his books in the Victorian Era, which also gave birth to a beautiful and extensively used typeface called Clarendon. The typeface was developed by Robert Besley and first published in 1845. Artful Dodger was modeled on the glyphs found in a 1865 book, which was typeset in Clarendon. Artful Dodger has not been 'cleaned', so the glyphs look rough and worn, just like the book I found them in.

☞ Bona Nova is a collective revival project of Bona typeface designed in 1971 by the author of polish banknotes Andrzej Heidrich. Besides giving the project a digital font form the aim was to expand the base character set: preparation of small caps, designing the alternative glyphs and multiple opentype features. Working together with the author we designed two new text versions: regular and bold – to give the family a form of a classic script triad. ☞ It is accompanied by three title versions and three contour styles under the name of Bona Sforza. All styles contains over 1200 glyphs. ☞ Bona Nova is an unprecedented typographic adventure for our team. We hope that our work will allow the cultural heritage of Bona and the work of Andrzeja Heidricha to gain new followers and fans. This project connected three generations of graphic designers who graduated the same school – the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. ☞ Bona Nova isn’t only a typeface. Torcao is one of the sporks of the font universe, a useful and functional outlier. Half square, half circle, this uncommon squircle of a family with its asymmetry of curved and angular shapes drives through headlines and body copy with forward velocity. The robust, technical appearance is light-hearted and inviting, and its organic nature plays off of its one-of-a-kind kinks and hybrid forms. Torcao is not merely an experimental font, though. The figures have been crafted and refined into a functional, hard-working typeface that lends itself to many sizes and environments. The font family features a tall x-height and light modulation, which give the typography its unique color highly effective in headlines but still quite legible in longer text. The designer of ITC Medea , Silvio Napoleone said: “I've always had an interest in early letter shapes, particularly how they influenced modern typographic designs. While I was on vacation in Greece, I had a chance to see, first-hand, examples of early letterforms and typography. They really made an impression on me.” The idea of combining the ancient and the modern to create something new was the primary inspiration behind ITC Medea. ITC Medea is essentially a careful blending of the modern sans serif with the elegant forms of the uncial. At first glance, Medea appears to be constructed of geometric shapes. However, closer inspection reveals many calligraphic subtleties. Stroke terminals are flared slightly in characters like the 'e' and 'c.' The top curve of the 'd' is more pronounced than the bottom, and characters like the 'o' are elliptical rather than round. “I gravitated towards the simplicity and legibility of the uncial and half-uncial,” Napoleone recalls. “I thought it would make a great titling font, and I was surprised at how attractive ITC Medea looked in a body text.”
