Released by the Monotype Corporation around 1932, Inflex Bold is a Scotch Roman fat face design similar to many others popular in the nineteenth century. A high-contrast bold roman, Inflex Bold is good for informal display work when used sparingly.

I recently came across an old travel journal I’d misplaced, and in it was a really rough sketch of an Italian post office. The sign lettering caught my eye while flipping through the pages, and while not my forte, I thought I’d take my stab at recreating sans-serif lettering as a font. The Postale family recaptures that old post signage and the vintage flair that appeals to me. A little reminiscing is always a good thing. You’ll find the Stylistic Alternates feature changes up the retro styled letters to a more modern sans serif styling for a handful of letterforms, if the vintage style of certain letters isn’t your cup of tea.

“I originally drew the primary characters with a felt tip marker, scanned them and then proceeded to noodle on the computer,” says George Ryan of his new typeface, Koorkin. “Over the years, I’ve designed many original typefaces, but Koorkin has become one of my favorites. The Vtg Stencil series of fonts from astype are based on real world stencils. The Germany No.1 design was derived from authentic antique German stencil-plates. » pdf specimen « Surprisingly these stencil-plates offer a high contrast Didot design very similar to the French stencils produced and sold till today. The production time of these stencils is in the range of the German imperial period (1871‒1918). Of course the usage period was even longer. PKG Roman Capitals is one more of Posterizer KG calligraphic fonts, based on Roman Square Capitals letterforms, also called Capitalis Monumentalis, Inscriptional Capitals, Elegant Capitals and Capitalis Quadrata from (about) 2nd century A.D. All graphemes are taken from calligraphic pages written with brush on traditional calligraphic stile, inspired by epigraphic monuments from the Roman Pantheon, Trajan’s Column, and the Arch of Titus. PKG Roman Capitals font is good guides for any who want to study the beautiful proportions of Roman Capitals. In practice, it can be useful for calligraphic sketches and imitation of Roman (European) historical manuscripts. FA Komunikat is an experimental and geometrical typeface based on simple elements: a circle, it's parts and straight lines. The typeface communicate the spirit of future, dynamism and modernity. FA Komunikat design was based on the sketch of unique lettering from 1932 made by Władysław Strzemiński, Polish vanguard abstract painter, an artist and a typographer. Strzemiński claimed that modern economic letter forms should be standardized and based on lines and arches. He wrote that readability is a matter of habit and after a practice the new letter forms would be very well readable for everyone. In 2004 Artur Frankowski revived original design creating set of characters, widen up with numerals, punctuation marks and diactrics.

NULATO is a sans serif font inspired by the great Alaskan outdoors and the clean shapes of the horizon. The font represents a modern and slick approach to a minimalist trend behind the core of great brand identity practices. Nulato took a year to develop, from the first sketches to the final 700+ glyphs the process took a significant amount of research and variables. The letters, specific ligatures, and symbols are a full stack. Galaxo Dot is a sister to Galaxo Line. HGB Galaxo is a tribute to Othmar Motter (1927–2010), the Vorarlberg graphic artist and typeface designer, who designed very individual and perfectly crafted typefaces in the 1970's and later. (Motter Ombra, Motter Tectura ...) From a Motter sketch of 5 letters for a logogram, I derived a simplified letterform and developed all the necessary characters. Working on these glyphs and delving deeper into Motter's letterforms, the respect for the accuracy with which he drew his letters (in ink) grew more and more. The spiral resembles the shape of a galaxy, hence the name Galaxo. The font is suitable for retro, poster and logo design.

A bit of happenstance and accident are always full of possibility — Richard Lipton’s Dunhill Script is based on observations of the work of his left-handed calligraphy students and then from a small detail generated by his own freehand sketching. Like his other script typefaces, Dunhill was born from the desire to achieve a certain visual drama. Many details show the pen at work, like the terminal shapes and the caps and ascenders. Dunhill also has a range of alternate stylistic glyphs and contextual features that can transform it into a connected script. Manuel, a simple, almost mathematically constructed typeface, includes stylistic alternates for a number of upper case characters. This comes in very helpful when designing logo letterings. Manuel(a) is a very charming, self-confident und exciting typeface design. The idea was to try to apply a given design criteria (also see Volker Schnebel's Marita and Martin fonts) to every single character. In other words, start with a character and develop all of the others from it. This is quite easy for some characters but extremely difficult for others. This process generates creativity and the characters move away from the initial constructed sketch. Together in a typeface, the individual characters are now all of a piece and character.

Umbilical Noose is a rather scary typeface. It is quite similar to an older font of mine: Nyctophobia. The name comes from a Nirvana song called Heart Shaped Box, in which Kurt Cobain sings: "throw down your umbilical noose, so I can climb right back". I have always liked that phrase a lot. Umbilical Noose is an all caps font, but upper and lower case are different and you can easily interchange the glyphs.

Two pieces of vintage sheet music (“Honeymoon Hotel” and “By a Waterfall”) from Warner Brothers' 1933 musical “Footlight Parade” featured a hand-lettered bold alphabet with a touch of the 1930s Art Deco influence. These song sheets served as the basis for Pocomoke JNL. As informal and casual as the design is, its strength is in the boldness of the letter forms (which showcases the era of pen-and-ink display lettering).

Yellow Balloon is a typeface named after my two year old son's favorite book: The Yellow Balloon by Dutch author/illustrator Charlotte Dematons. Every night before he goes to sleep, he wants to read the book and manages to find the yellow balloon on every page. Yellow Balloon is a cartoonesque font with an uneven baseline. Hand lettered Art Deco lettering for the title on the cover of the 1930s-era song "And I Still Do" provided the inspiration for Swing Era JNL. The hand-lettered title on a piece of sheet music for 1938's "Don't Be That Way" (as recorded by Benny Goodman) featured squared letters with rounded corners, slight variants in line thickness and interesting "overhangs". Additionally, some letters closed off on one end while others were opened, giving the impression of a slight "maze" effect. This unique song title was enough of an inspiration to be turned into Musical Arrangement JNL.

Let Me Call You Sweetheart was one of the most popular songs of the early 20th Century, and a piece of vintage sheet music for this tune had its title hand lettered in a square, narrow block lettering style. With a few adjustments and adaptations, this led to the creation of Tall and Narrow JNL, a digital version of the type design which is a perfect alternate to the more conventional condensed faces.

Junior Clerk JNL is the plain sans serif version of the lettering found on the cover of the sheet music for 1919's "The World is Waiting for the Sunrise". The song title was originally set in a decorative sans serif with an engraved line adorning each character. This version of the more fanciful design is available as the companion font Legal Eagle JNL. Junior Clerk JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

The cover on the sheet music for the 1922 song "If She Comes from Dixie" had the title hand-lettered in an Art Nouveau style with a semi-stencil effect. It's now available as Nouveau Semi Stencil JNL in both regular and oblique versions. The typeface is not considered a "pure" stencil because many of the letters were made solid; lacking the classic stencil "breaks" at key points found in more traditional stencil designs.

Sheet music for the 1939 Hoagy Carmichael composition "Hong Kong Blues" features the Far East-influenced hand lettered title that was the basis for Asian Imports JNL; available in both regular and oblique versions. Carmichael performed the song in the 1944 Warner Brothers film "To Have and Have Not", (which first paired Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall). The sheet music was a reissue to capitalize on the song's use in the film.

“The Auto Show” is the title of an early 1900s pieces of sheet music proving that America has had a fascination with cars since the earliest days of the automotive industry. Most of the lettering on a piece of sheet music for a song from the 1921 George M. Cohan musical comedy entitled “The O’Brien Girl” was hand lettered in a playful, casual Art Nouveau design with rounded ends. The characters on that page took on a look reminiscent of cartoon or comic strip wording, and the result is a digital typeface named Cartoon Nouveau JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

I had a Neneh Cherry song in my head when I made this font. In ‘Buffalo Stance’ she sings about a gigolo with his hands in his pockets and his crocodile feet. Vintage packaging [circa 1940s] for a sewing machine attachment used for making lattice-type stitching had its information hand lettered in a casual Art Deco sans serif design. This became the basis of Home Economics JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.
