This extremely heavy informal script was created in the early 1920s by Lucian Bernhard. Like so many of his designs, this typeface has its roots in his earlier poster work. Bernhard Brushscript invokes a rather warm, pleasant feeling despite a number of quirky characters. Originally created for the Bauer Foundry of Frankfurt, Germany, the face looks as though it’s been drawn with a brush and contains looping ascenders and descenders. Perfect for situations where a quaint and casual lettering effect is desired. The Bernhard Brushscript is also available in the OpenType Std format. Gianluca is a typeface of glyphic serif, or “flare” inspired by Aldo Novarese’s fonts from the 70s, with a fresh and modern touch. It is a type family that can be elegant in its normal version, or very playful, to compose from extensive texts to flashy headlines in books, magazines, labels, posters, branding and more. It has many discretionary ligatures in capital letters (with its diacritics) to play with the text, 5 stylistic sets: among them medieval style or references to Herb Lubalin, and some special letters. I became interested in designing Bodoni Classic because of a lazy graphic designer at Jacques Damase publishing house. He had to change a single letter on a bookcover about J. B. BODONI. The French call him Jean Baptiste instead of Giambattista! And that unknown graphic designer just took any old “J” from some newly cut Bodoni. All the new Bodoni cuts have square serifs, whereas the originals had rounded serifs and slightly concave feet. The single letter “J” with the squared off serif was for me like a road sign to start redesigning the entire Bodoni family. Provincial Railway is the first product of argentine typographic archeology project called "Tipografía Histórica Ferroviaria" (Fabio Ares & Octavio Osores, since 2012). Is about the signboards of the stations of the P1 line of the Provincial Railway of Buenos Aires (1907-1977). The letter of this signboards can be described as display type, with a tall box and a constructivist style, with elementary geometric shapes and without line modulation. Although without a doubt, its differential feature is provided by the rectangular shapes that it has towards the ascending and descending lines, which in some cases coincide with the stems, showing a curious rhythm in the composition of the text line. The family is completed with complementary fonts of different styles. The proceeds from the sale of the fonts will be used to finance the project.

While designing a logotype for a client, she described herself as "loud and colorful." Thinking about some eras in typefaces that portrayed this idea, I instantly thought of the "Roaring 20s" and the Prohibition era where the cinema is starting to take off and the Italian mafia are running the bars. (Which is coincidental because my client has family connections to Al Capone.) One of the most iconic typefaces designed for these times was Broadway by Morris Fuller Benton in 1925. This typeface was the zeitgeist of Broadway, the big city, theater, and cinema, which can now be seen in use almost everywhere an old family run cinema is located. Using the heavy influences of the thick and thin contrast of this typeface, Maritote brings the charm of Broadway into the 21st century.

This family is inspired from the set of two styles, Roman normal and Italic, and the ornaments used by an unknown printer working around East Switzerland, circa 1750's. It is a Dutch style font, slightly bolder than usual Fournier's or Caslon's Roman fonts, with some emphasized serifs and finals parts and special letters as capital "U" for example. A set of initials, fleurons, ornaments and frame elements is joined to the family as a supplement. The two styles, Normal and Italic, are containing standard ligatures, a few alternative characters and titlings (who are more preferable than enlarged capitals). They are "small eye" or "Small x-eight" fonts. The standard characters set is completed with accented or specific characters for Western (Including Celtic) and Central Europe, Baltic, Eastern Europe and Turkish.

Rock Painting is based on ancient Northern rock paintings and I edited the glyphs to resemble latin letters, runelike. So it's quite writable and the characters can also be used separately in bigger shape. Some of the glyphs are idols of old Finnish gods and spirits: A - Ahti, god of (usually) water element or a spirit that lives in a pond, a lake or a river etc. I - Ilmarinen, god of the air K - Kaleva, ancient giant blacksmith, the great ancestor of Finns L - Luonnotar, the spirit of all nature, gives birth to creatures T - Tapio, god of the forest or the forest itself N - Nyyrikki/Nyrki, son of Tapio, a great hunter and so on. The DIN Neue Roman adds something new to the established concept of the DIN 1451 type’s technical origin. As a serif counterpart it leaves its static appeal to bring some friendliness into this industrial idea. With more contrast than a slab serif and the dynamic stroke of transitional type DIN Neue Roman defies all conventions, but keeps its legibility. To have enough resources for diverse and complex typography this type family offers 7 weights with italics, small caps and all kind of opentype features. Type designer Philip Lammert likes to play with the great potential of contradictions. That brought him to this design combining two essentially different classics. DIN Neue Roman is part of his 2015’s master thesis at the HAW Hamburg which was supervised by Prof. Jovica Veljovic.

Scriptissimo is, as the name says, very much of a script! It is in the best American tradition. A script that could have served for writing the Constitution with, if only they would have had computers at that time. Scriptissimo consists of three different scripts that are meant to be used together. One is the script with the more or less plain characters. Two is the version for characters to start a word with. Three is the cut that has the characters for the end of a word. Ligatures is used for, well, ligatures and some glyphs like Ltd., GmbH, and so on. Scriptissimo is a very elegant and versatile script. Another 48-cut family from a typeface system which originally arose from the need to simply explain to some publishers what it is “serif, sans-serif, egyptian”, etc. including their style variations. Over time, the Trivia became quite popular, which was her goal. Ciutadella was originally commissioned by Mario Eskenazi’s studio. It is a versatile geometric sans serif, a simple, clean and direct family. The Dragon Quill family is the 3rd reincarnation of earlier (yet to be released) dragon fonts. A simple 'Dragon Round' grew to become 'Dragon Flare', then evolved to become 'Dragon Quill'. Within the Dragon Quill family, 1 'Subtle Goth' is the most basic, followed by 2 'Goth' and 3 'Gothic'. 4 'Tribal Tattoo' is the most complex font in the family, adding hooks, spikes, holes and extra shapes around and between letters. Mirabel is based on the handwriting of Beverly Bouwsma (Philip's mother), which she developed in the 1930s in, as she puts it, an act of teenage rebellion. In the 1960s, Philip gave her a broad-edged Osmiroid fountain pen which she took to immediately and has used ever since, along with the computer fonts he made from her script. Since Beverly Bouwsma mixed loops and straight ascenders, two interchangeable fonts have emerged, a formal package that sacrifices some flamboyance for classical balance and legibility, but retains the quality of the writing and celebrates the personality of its creator. The Mirabel fonts are available in all popular font formats, and the character sets cover a wide range of codepages, including Central and Eastern European languages, Esperanto, Turkish, Baltic, Celtic/Welsh.

This year we attended the Bologna Children’s Book Fair in Italy. In our days off, we went to Piazza Maggiore to see what the city had to offer and luckily for us we saw an incredible store sign saying CAMPORA. We took some pictures of the typed font and later back in the studio we discovered that it was Dynamo. Immediately our minds were blown away by its beauty and thus we decided to design a new font inspired by its sharp and geometric design adding new weights and OpenType features. In the process we realized that both Dynamo and one of our favorite fonts Avant Garde, share a similar structure, so we made a type mashup between these beauties, including the sharpness of Dynamo and the revolutionary ligatures of Avant Garde.

Some years ago I had my first contact with a grotesque typeface, when handling a sample catalog of typographic specimens from the age of phototypesetting. The style eventually settled in my memory waiting for the work of time. Behind its apparent neutrality, there is a complex balance game, that almost leads to the basic principles of design which deliver such power to the grotesque style. Stevie Sans is the answer to the action of time. A bridge that allows the designer to go into the past, while being in the present and looking towards the future. The purpose of Brutman was to create a typeface that reimagined the incise style for the 21st century. P22 Kelly is a Celtic-styled uncial font with a medieval gothic flavor and an overall contemporary feel. The font is an addition to Ted Staunton’s collection of historical and period-based fonts. It is ideal for uses that need to evoke the Celtic spirit or the medieval period. Based on half-uncial Irish monastic handwriting of the 8th to 10th centuries, but instead of having a traditional upright stress, has an italic slant. Some Gothic influence is evident—like the thorn-like tick-marks decorating the capitals—but the rounded forms of h, m, n, u emphasize a wide, open, horizontal visual texture. The font is named in honor of the Book of Kells, the 8th-century masterpiece of Celtic calligraphic art, which is kept in Trinity College, Dublin.

Balboa Plus is a condensed sans serif display family. It was originally conceived as a simple black and white typeface. But it seemed unfinished, begging for something more. I decided to try adding a couple layers of fill and detail to try and make it interesting. The result is this four-layer chromatic font family. The Primary Font is the Main Font. The other fonts ( Fill, Inline, and Gradient) only exist to support the Primary Font. The Fill font should sit behind the Primary font (there is a little color trapping going on). The rest is even easier. There is a free downloadable PDF Balboa User Manual in the Gallery section for this family. It has samples and some backstory. If you want your design to have that nostalgic typewriter effect, Not my Type would be perfect. It's old-fashioned and retro—letters are worn and grungy like it needs a new ink ribbon. Some of the letters are misaligned—just like a real old typewriter. It is best used at smaller sizes, perfect for logos, headlines, covers and any design where you want that vintage look and feel. Each letter has two alternatives, making three in total. Using the alternative letters, you can make your type layouts look more random, like a real typewriter. You can manually set the alternatives via the glyphs panel in your design software or you can enable them automatically. If you enable contextual alternatives in your design application, the letters will change automatically as you type.

This typeface family was inspired by a set of fonts, designed in the Garamond style, used for an edition of Remarques critiques sur les œuvres d’Horace by “D.A.E.P.”, published in Paris in 1689 by two different booksellers: Deny Thierry and Claude Barbin. We can see some differences in comparison with our “pure” Garamond (see our 1592 GLC Garamond), particularly in the lowercase of the Normal style and the uppercase of the Italic. Unfortunately, we know neither the name of the punchcutter, nor that of the printer. This complete font set contains small caps, fractions all the way up to 1999/1999, historical and standard ligatures, and all of the fleurons contained in the edition (Normal style only). The alphabet covers all Western, Eastern and Central European languages (including Celtic diacritics) and Turkish.

We decided to explore the concept of fitness, but from a more natural perspective. With so many people drinking detox drinks and eating raw food, we were inspired to create a font that mixes the ‘strength’ of sports and the organic nature of natural products. Close Together was designed to alternate convex and concave letter sets, with convex letters on the upper-case keys and concave shapes on the lower-case keys. The OpenType feature of contextual alternatives (calt) does this automatically. Individually some of the letter shapes are strange and unsightly. They have the shapes that they have so that they fit snuggly with adjacent letters. The family has three weights: regular, bold, and extrabold. The letter spacing is set very tight and the user may want to loosen it by altering characters spacing. (Either the convex or concave set the letters can be used alone if the character spacing is adjusted.) The typeface has four OpenType stylistic sets of alternates, one for numbers and the others for letters D, T, and Y.

The origin of this font was a frieze in the RAF Chapel in Westminster Abbey which Michael Harvey was commissioned to design and create. It was comprised of the names of the top brass in wartime Bomber Command, namely Dowding, Harris, Newall, Tedder, Portal and Douglas. The Brief was to cut the letters in bronze and gild them. Instead, they were cut in perspex and gilded. To sit comfortably within the long and narrow vertical space available beneath the chapel’s stained glass window, extended letterforms were used with many vertical serifs omitted and with lengthened horizontal serifs. Some twenty years later, the missing upper-case letters were drawn together with the lowercase letters and Frieze, the font, was born. Subsequently, additional weights and styles were added to create a font family of six styles.

All the new Bodoni cuts have square serifs, whereas the originals had rounded serifs and slightly concave feet. The single letter “J” with the squared off serif was for me like a road sign to start redesigning the entire Bodoni family. That’s exactly what I started in 1993 and a dozen years later I am finished. Okay, I am still adding new Bodoni Classics, but those are my personal additions. Yours very retro, Gert Wiescher
