Manuel, a simple, almost mathematically constructed typeface, includes stylistic alternates for a number of upper case characters. This comes in very helpful when designing logo letterings. Manuel(a) is a very charming, self-confident und exciting typeface design. The idea was to try to apply a given design criteria (also see Volker Schnebel's Marita and Martin fonts) to every single character. In other words, start with a character and develop all of the others from it. This is quite easy for some characters but extremely difficult for others. This process generates creativity and the characters move away from the initial constructed sketch. Together in a typeface, the individual characters are now all of a piece and character.

Flax Regular lives in a somewhat unusual space... it is not a normal “handwriting” font, nor is it a formal script, or a rounded italic. Flax is a slightly more formal handwriting script that is extremely legible and useful- it can stretch from invitations to packaging, to menus, to brochures to ads. The rough hand-drawn finish gives Flax some of its unique character. This is almost unnoticeable in smaller point sizes while clearly visible in display sizes. While Flax is slightly formal, it has a very friendly presence - mainly from the unpretentious rounded characters and rough finish. Annonce is a digitization and expansion of a 1912 Johannes Wagner Foundry classic called Aurora Grotesk, which also circulated later on in metal under the name Annonce. Bold, extended and clear as a bell, Annonce stood out as the definite big sign font long before the Helveticas of the world. With angled cuts on some of the letters, it also shows humanistic traits that make it more appealing than any other face in its genre. This font is my first attempt at typeface design. It is based on my own handwriting and I tried to maintain the natural quality, where the letters are quite loose, some going in different directions, thickness and position. It has Open Type features including contextual alternatives, stylistic sets and ligatures. Trying to maintain natural quality of handwriting each glyph has four styles which randomly appear when you type. For example, when there are double letters, the two letters are slightly different. You may also switch off the random feature and use the four styles on their own. The many alternates are best activated in OpenType-aware programs, such as Word 2010, Illustrator CS4+, InDesign CS4+ and QuarkXpress 7+.

Kamerik 105 Text is the text specific variation of stablemate, Kamerik 105. With a shallower x-height and longer ascenders and descenders, its more traditional proportions make it more economical with space and better suited to continuous text. It's a well-balanced, versatile, modern sans, highly legible as a text font and with a clean, elegant look as a display font at larger sizes. The Kamerik 105 Text family comprises of four weights and includes old style non-aligning (lower case) numbers, both proportional and tabular as well as accented characters for Central European languages. It is closely related to Kamerik 205 Text, which offers variations in some characters, most notably a two-storey lower case a and g.

First of all, let me get one thing straight: With Janky Action, I didn’t make any attempt on making a beautiful or good looking font! Janky Action is my humble attempt to recreate a sign I saw at a flea market. The sign was obviously made by someone who didn’t give a darn about the width of strokes, height of letters, and other “rules” when making a sign. I fell in love with the naive approach on how to make a sign. In order to create some randomness, I have added 4 different versions of each lowercase letter. I hope you find this font as enjoyable as I did while making it! :)

The idea of Transport originates from text found on the large wooden boxes used for transport. Such text is still stencilled on them in the same way as the companies have done for decades, at least. That explains the typeface's name, too. If you find some similarities with Devin, you are right. Transport is nothing other than a special variant of Devin. But since the two are aimed for totally different uses, I decided to use two different names for them. Transport is a mecane and its use is primarily as a headline typeface. But in small quantities it can be used even for body setting, if special effects are desired. Transport was released in 1994.

Cut by Monotype between 1900 and 1902, the Monotype Modern font family was based on Miller & Richards News 23 and 28; slightly condensed news text types of the 1890s. Monotype Modern is a lively typeface, with long, fine hairlines and well rounded letterforms, representing the best of nineteenth century modern face design. A classic text face, and typical of the moderns that were produced in the United Kingdom at that time, being less extreme in its rendering than some of the models of purer form being produced elsewhere. Monotype Modern is an excellent text face for magazines, newspapers and books, the heavier and more condensed versions are useful in headlines and display.

Krimhilde was originally designed by Albert Auspurg and released in 1933 with the type foundry Ludwig & Mayer. The design mixes elements of German blackletter typefaces and geometric sans-serif designs, which became popular in the 1920s in the movement known as New Typography. The FDI version of Krimhilde offers both original styles (regular and bold) as “version A” with a full Latin 1 character set. “Version B” has alternative shapes for some letters to make the design more legible for people who are not familiar with the German blackletter shapes. In addition, there are optional display styles available (outline, shadow and fill), which can be used separately or together to create a chromatic layout.

Rotulo is a contrasted sans family which combines the Thick & Thin signpainter's style and some 70s feeling in a huge font family with 90 styles. A visit to an exhibition of Spanish movie posters by Jano was the beginning of Rótulo (Spanish for Sign) project. Classic thick & thin signpainter style was featured in many letterings of those posters, as it was a very common style in 60s and 70s Spanish design. Unfortunately, today very few Contrasted Sans are seen, something that was quite common years ago has fallen into disuse in favor of Helvetic monotony. Rótulo recapture all that personality, with an extense range of weights and widths to be used in striking headlines and short texts.

For those who like to assemble their own larger borders, a set of elements is on the 2-9 keystrokes, but it must be noted that some manual adjustment is necessary to line up all of the parts in a complete border pattern. From a Happy New Year greeting to whimsical cartoon characters; from singular ornamental design elements to beautiful brackets, this mix of subjects is a great overview of the kinds of cuts found in printers' job case drawers in years gone by.

Apollo is oddly one of the lesser known typefaces of Frutiger, perhaps due to the extreme fame of some of his other works, like the typefaces Frutiger® and Univers®. Stylistically, the very legible and harmonic Apollo is an old face. Frutiger designed it especially for the photosetting used at the time. The Apollo typeface family consists of the weights roman and semibold and their respective italics as well as expert sets. Frutiger optimized the relation between the two weights so that the roman is robust enough to present a legible text on soft paper but light enough to contrast with the semibold. The clear, elegant Apollo is perfect for headlines as well as long texts.

This is the tallest, skinniest, most condensed, non serif font I know of. I designed this because I felt a serious need for that one big, thin word to fit in a narrow space. It is great for ‘SALE!’ in a one column ad. Also is a life saver for several long words in a narrow space like Merry Christmas... If you need a full character set take a look at the new Ultra Condensed 3 font family. Ultra Condensed was based on Tall Skinny Condensed with some changes and a full character set.
