Inspired by an old matchbook which read: "Chop Suey: Finest Chinese and American Cooking". A part of The Proteus Project, the typographic theme-and-variations based on related Regency styles, Saracen was created for Rolling Stone, in whose pages the typeface first appeared in 1993 . From the desk of the designer: Though the wedge serif printing type is a nineteenth century innovation, Saracen does not resemble any font from this era. It’s mysterious that typefounders of the Victorian age who sought the extreme and fanciful in their work — exploring all manner of serif treatments, and creating extra-condensed and super-expanded designs — never made a latin font of this straightforward proportion. <

Titul is a display typeface with strong historical connotations. It is based on a series of stylish lettering for book covers, designed by Russian graphic artist Alexander Leo in the 1920s. The historical reference for him was book design of the 1st half of the 19th century. Type family consists of four ornamented and three basic styles: one solid, one inline and one striped. All seven faces have corresponding oblique styles. Also, there is a beautiful vignette font and a style for constructing ornamental borders. Titul suits best for vintage spirited typography, from the 19th to early 20th century. It is perfect for book covers, theater posters, packaging and greeting cards. Typeface was created by Isabella Chaeva and released by Paratype in 2020.

This font was originally meant to be my last creation of 2022, but as it turned out, it was the first font of 2023 instead! Why? Well, because it took me a lot of time to complete the 150 different swahes letter combinations, the 182 different letters (not counting numbers, accented characters etc) the small caps, the subscript and the multilingual support! Anyway, it was worth the work - the Frequent font works great as a display font, or whatever you have in mind. Play around with the different versions (Regular, Solid and Inside) for great results.

The name Norden means “the Nordic”, as in the geographical area or its countries. Walter Thiemann recovered that shadow when he put a thin line and a shadow line around his Tiemann Fraktur. It is an embellished and delightful typeface, this Peter Schlemihl. ITC Ludwig has an edge. It's nervous, tense - maybe even a little scary. Drawn by Italian designer Giuseppe Errico, ITC Ludwig refuses to be confined to a traditional baseline. Its twisted lowercase g" and an "e" that could double as an upside-down "a" both add to the design's spooky personality. As a young man, Errico studied to be a fine artist. He became a graphic designer only after a “long reflection period,” he says. His early training is evident in many of ITC Ludwig's suggestive qualities. There is far more to this face than cranking up the “distort” knob in Fontographer. Reflection and personal expression are at its core."

Program is a type designer’s typeface. It’s about the craft of typeface design and the particular details and effects that type designers fret over when they design type. It mixes different structures, stem endings, and weight distributions not usually employed in a single family of fonts. It features both rounded edges evoking the effects of reproduction, and ink traps, the technique used to counteract that effect. The idea was to create a series of fonts with strong individualistic features, challenging the constraints of a central theme that is usually imposed on a family of fonts, while still relating to each other in terms of overall look and feel.

Crypt is a seemingly lovely font that will look good in just about any design. But if you take a closer look, then Crypt is actually quite a scary font: it has jagged edges and a sinister undertone, making the letters jump from your computer and eat you alive! Whoohahaha…!! No, it won’t eat you, I’m just kidding. I just threw that in for some dramatic effect in an otherwise quite boring piece of text. Use Crypt for book covers, posters, product packaging and magazines. I promise you that the result will be quite haunting. Needless to say, Crypt comes with an otherworldly amount of diacritics.

Roswell was designed by Jim Parkinson, who acknowledges the 'spacey' ancestry of its name. Yes, Roswell, New Mexico. There was a big anniversary of 'the incident' in the news while I was designing in Roswell. "The incident" is of course the alleged UFO crash in Roswell. "I thought the name was acceptable as a serious font name, while, on another level, having a strangely humorous edge," says Parkinson. Roswell looks great in large sizes on a poster or in a magazine layout. It started out as "a variation on American gothic forms like Railroad Gothic", says the designer, but Roswell is an original design with eccentricities of its own."

Android is an experimental 3D shadow outline font developed by the American type designer Alex Kaczun. The unique lighting created by the beveled edge in combination with an outline font was particularly difficult to create. But the result was worth the effort. Android makes for a powerful headline display that virtually pops off the page. There is a true three dimensional quality to this innovative new typeface. Use the regular Android when setting tight leading for smaller point sizes, and use Android Tall which has taller capitals for larger headlines. By experimenting with Type Effects in Illustrator or PhotoShop you can achieve some spectacular additional 3D effects.

Sandokan is a brush script font with a character and morphology that nears Oriental calligraphy, Art Nouveau typefaces, psychedelic “flower power” fonts from the Sixties and Tuscan poster fonts from the 19th century. Its main features are the high contrast between thick and thin strokes and the extreme slanted angle in the typewriter imprints, creating inverse shadowing. The letter set is further accentuated by exotic decorative details and the often unusual connectors between small letters. The typeface supports all languages using the universal Latin character set. Sandokan is a slightly sweetened cultural cocktail. As such it looks best on everything that needs to come across as exotic and rather solid but unmistakeably eccentric - such as labels and packaging on exotic delicacies or circus posters.

The Aguas Frescas font family is an outline, hand-drawn display typestyle that reflects script handwriting with a lively, whimsical twist. It is a flowery little font that dances across headlines with a happy and likable good-natured attitude and a lyrical lilt. Antique Price Tags JNL is a collection of fifty-two decorative price cards recreating the look and charm of turn-of-the-last-century mercantile shops. The design is a hybrid of the decorative frame and dollar sign of antique price cards spotted in an online auction, and prices modeled from some gummed numerals once made by the Tablet and Ticket Company of Chicago under the brand name “Willson’s Gummed Letters” (after the company’s founder). Also included in the font are blank price cards with only a dollar sign, a cents sign or an empty frame, as well as a solid black frame for creating a backfill color. A companion font is available with the numbers in white on black panel backgrounds.

Shelf is a humanistic sans-serif font of cool and solid character. Its frugal, clean and organic drawing as well as its name were inspired by the ice shelf landscape. Shelf was designed as a universal tool for creating a coherent information and navigation systems with accompanying publications, such as visual identity of exhibitions including catalogues. It is suggested to set long texts in Roman and Italic, while the best combination for a wayfinding system is Roman and Oblique. Every weight, therefore, contains Roman, Italic and Oblique versions. Axion SSF is an original design by Alex Kaczun. Axion SSF is a style variation based on his original Axion typeface family of fonts. It is a display font not intended for text use.
