My wife was watching a baking show in which a Scottish guy attempted to cook a clootie. A what?? A clootie??? Never heard of a clootie! Apparently it is a suet dumpling, containing dried fruits (like raisins) and boiled in a piece of cloth (clootie means ‘rag’ or ‘strip of cloth’ in Scottish). Clootie font is a handmade bundle of happiness. It is rounded, soft and legible and will look particularly good on book covers. And I promise you all: one day I will cook clooties to find out what they taste like!

Architype Konstrukt is a collection of avant-garde typefaces deriving mainly from the work of artists/designers of the inter-war years, whose ideals have helped to shape the design philosophies of the modernist movement in Europe. Due to their experimental nature character sets may be limited. Architype Van der Leck originates from the lettering that Bart Van der Leck created for ‘Flax’ magazine in 1941. The letterforms‘ restricted shapes and abstract, stencil-like forms reflect the strong geometric language of De Stijl and show influence from his abstract paintings.

The inspiration for Deco Eccentrique JNL was initially hand drawn contoured lettering from a mid-1920s piece of sheet music; the style of the letters showing influences of the upcoming Art Deco movement. This was made into a digital font entitled Poster Contoured JNL. Once all of the excess parts of the previous design were stripped away to only the inner letters, the pre-Art Deco influences remained along with characters of varying stroke widths and shapes. This non-conformist type face is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Libelle is a 21st century English Copperplate Script typeface. Created by Jovica Veljović, a designer with decades of experience as a calligrapher, typeface designer, and professor, Libelle differentiates itself from other Copperplates Scripts because its letterforms are less mechanical. The hand of the calligrapher shows through the forms, breathing new life into this historic genre. Libelle includes approximately 400 extra glyphs, including alternate forms of many letters and special forms for the beginnings and ends of words. The font includes several stylistic sets, as well as ligatures and ornaments.

Freak was originally released by The Great Western Type Foundry in 1889. According to Maurice Annenberg, Great Western became Barnhart Brothers & Spindler when the Barnhart brothers bought out the Toepfer family in 1868.The plant superintendent, Charles Spindler, became Secretary of the new firm. Specimen books as late as 1899 show the name Great Western alongside the BB&S name. At some point, prior to 1925, Freak was renamed “Bamboo” by BB&S. It was delisted when BB&S was absorbed by ATF in 1929. Listed in McGrew under “Bamboo”.

Xanthine… is a purine base found in most human body tissues. Yes, you can forget that. I don’t even know what it means, but I suddenly realised that I was running low on fonts with an ‘x’ in the name. This charming font, with its hints of the exotic, originally carried the rather prosaic name of Show Card Roman. Art deco typography from the Netherlands that summons a thirties vibe for a nostalgic twist on chic lines. Nazhdak is a handwriting sans serif of three styles sketched with a felted pen and digitized afterwards. Designed in 2001 under the impression of Erik van Blockland's FF Kosmik typeface. Nazhdak is searching and investigating boundaries between regular and irregular typefaces. In spite of ragged letterforms and general laxity the face is rather good for small sizes, and in large sizes it completely shows its crude fascination. The main destinations are small informal text compositions and display typography. Nazhdak was designed by Zakhar Yaschin and released by ParaType in 2009.
