The German poet, painter, calligrapher and type designer Emil Rudolf Weiß originally created this eponymous typeface for the Bauer Foundry of Frankfurt. My youngest son Boris has his birthday in a week. He turns 8, and he loves to play with those Danish building blocks - you know what I’m talking about. Last year he developed an interest in Star Wars n(no idea how that came to be), so we bought him some Star Wars-themed blocks for his birthday. I am now watching the movies with him and it is fun to witness his enthusiasm. The only drawback is the fact that we now seem to have a Chewbacca in our home… Meowtant Kittens is a font I drew with a fineliner and then digitised. Of course the name was influenced by the movies I am watching with Boris, even though they don’t feature any Meowtant Kittens.

The hand cut wood type which was the inspiration for Wood Nouveau JNL conjures up images of the artistic period between the Victorian Era and 1920s Moderne, as well as the hippie counterculture active in the later part of the 20th Century. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, rock posters, fliers, store signs and other printed ephemera of "the love generation" borrowed heavily from the Art Noveau style in both art and typography. An Alphonse Mucha-inspired flower girl could adorn a concert poster that also combined both vintage wood type and hand-lettered elements. Although this particular type design might well have preceded the actual start of the Nouveau period, the softer, rounder lines of each character lent themselves well to this emerging style.

Lately I have been thinking about rabbits. Not that I have a particular love for rabbits - they’re cute, but also kind of stupid. But as Christmas dinner is approaching, I see more rabbit carcasses lining the shelves of supermarkets. These poor animals never saw the light of day, never felt the grass between their paws and never had a ‘true life’. In honour of the hundreds of thousands of rabbits being slaughtered for Christmas this year, I have named this font: Rabbit Escape. Rabbit Escape is a slightly back-slanted typeface - handmade with a permanent marker I bought in Japan. It is quite unusual, maybe a bit weird, but it will serve you well. In B-movie awesomeness, Air began as Grotesk vs. Grotesque. I was trying to unify the prevailing traits of German and English Grotes(que/k)s in order to make something different but familiar. I am NOT trying to reinvent Helvetica (snore), so get that out of your system. From the onset, I intended this typeface to be a true workhorse that offers infinite options and flexibility for the user. At its core, it is the maturation of the Aaux Next skeleton I developed years ago. I worked out Aaux Next to settle my issues and love for Akzidenz. With Aaux Next, I strove to be mechanical, cold and unforgiving with it. I was single, young, cocky and it fit. Now I'm married, kids, dog and have found that I've turned into a big softy. When I look at Aaux Next (and have for the past few years) I see another typeface trying to eek out. I wanted it to avoid the trappings of robotic sans, quick tricks and compromises. The typeface’s DNA needed to be drawn and not just generated on a screen — so I set aside a year. I love type. I love working with type. I hate when my options for a slanted complement is only oblique or italic. I set out to produce both to balance usage — there are more than enough reasons to prepare both and I want the user to feel free to consciously choose (and have the option to choose) the appropriate typeface for print, web, etc. That flexibility was central to my decision-making process. The Oblique is immediate and aggressive. The Italic was redrawn at a less severe angle with far more movement and, as a result, is far more congenial when paired with the Uprights.
