Named after the steadfast doctor from Albert Camus’ The Plague, Rieux is an even-tempered slab-serif that is confident without being cocky and approachable without being casual. While the design is not directly derived from typefaces of that era, the shapes of letter-forms are informed by images of over-sized steel machines and the monolithic brick buildings that housed them. Designed by Malou Verlomme of the Monotype Studio, Macklin is a superfamily, which brings together several attention-grabbing styles. Adrian Frutiger came up with this unusually purposeful and strong design in 1981 for Linotype. Early humanistic typefaces of the sixteenth century, especially Jenson, served as models for Breughel. The right sides of the stems are vertical and at right angles to the baseline while the left sides of the stem curve into the serifs, making the typeface look as though it slants to the right, and giving it a sense of movement and liveliness. The ductus of the broad-edged pen is reflected in the flow, rhythm, and texture of text set in Breughel, but at the same time this design has a regularity of form that is typographically solid. Das Riese, a type specimen by the most productive Brazilian type foundry, Intellecta Design, is a mix of victorian and art deco influences. A beautiful display type for tiling with uppercases only. It's shadows and volumes refer to pre-modern age whereas its surface to last century 20's. This heavy sans serif strokes characters have a particular appearance, a parallel line texture that reminds Bifur, typeface created in 1929 by A. M. Cassandre. The sideways absence of volume at some leaning letters right side in addition to the patchy darkness of shadows support its handmade design. P22 Kelly is a Celtic-styled uncial font with a medieval gothic flavor and an overall contemporary feel. The font is an addition to Ted Staunton’s collection of historical and period-based fonts. It is ideal for uses that need to evoke the Celtic spirit or the medieval period. Based on half-uncial Irish monastic handwriting of the 8th to 10th centuries, but instead of having a traditional upright stress, has an italic slant. Some Gothic influence is evident—like the thorn-like tick-marks decorating the capitals—but the rounded forms of h, m, n, u emphasize a wide, open, horizontal visual texture. The font is named in honor of the Book of Kells, the 8th-century masterpiece of Celtic calligraphic art, which is kept in Trinity College, Dublin.

Buddy is the new companion sans for Contenu, the book font family designed for my book on font design design. Originally, I called it Compagnon, but that seemed to pompous. Then I called it Aide, but that was too formal and dry. It's a loose, free, easy to read sans, so when my wife suggested Buddy, it clicked. This is the 4-font Buddy family of Regular, Italic, Bold, & Bold Italic. I made a new, more limited feature set for these fonts due to their designed usage, but there are still small caps, small cap figures, oldstyle figures, numerators, and denominators. The bold is closer to a black, and the italics are only slightly slanted obliques. If you need a strong black in caps, use the small caps of the bold.

Jet is an assertive italic sans that anticipates the return of the simpler, optimistic times when progress was considered positive and forward seemed to be the only way to go. It may have felt right at home in the mid-1970s, the time of Sc-Fi, synthetics and disco, yet it unmistakably belongs to the present. Benda is a modern geometric script font with roots in the calligraphy and lettering of legendary artist Jaroslav Benda. Estragon is a vivid sans-serif text face with venetian influences, suitable especially for books. It is remarkable for: its light slant, to the right, for most of the verticals, its small sized uppercase letters making it suitable for languages where they are often used (for example German,) and its just lightly inclined true italics. For a wide language support, Estragon contains a lot of accented characters including the polish kreska. It is generously equipped with ligatures, special and alternate characters as well as various kinds of numbers: besides the standard old-style figures to be set as part of text copy there are small-cap and tabular numbers as well as a set of fraction figures. Estragon comes with two weights, uprights and true italics, each with small-caps.

Lunatica Display is a single weight, all capitals, slanted typeface ideal for titles and headlines due to its strong presence. It is constructed in a very modular fashion, stepping away from some typographic conventions, while keeping the form of its characters familiar and easily recognisable. This typeface is heavily inspired on the aesthetics of the space related sci-fi movie genre, specifically on the movie Moon (2009), directed by Duncan Jones and starring Sam Rockwell, from where it also picks up the inspiration for the name “Lunatica”. It was first designed as a branding exercise, thought to be the official typeface of Lunar Industries Ltd. — the company through wich the movie exists and unfolds. You can use Lunatica Display in more conventional contexts like branding but also in more experimental and futuristic-looking ways.

Type designer Xavier Dupré’s Garalda is a charming 21st century family that renews a legacy of finesse. As paragraphs on a page, Garalda’s overall impression is of a workaday personality, committed to the main purpose of the job: easy long-form reading. But setting it in display sizes proves something different: This reinvented Garamond is anything but basic. The Garalda story begins with the serendipitous finding of a book typeset in a rare Garalde, called Tory-Garamond, with which Dupré was not immediately familiar. This Garamond was used in bibliophile books in the decades surrounding 1920, but after that it became déclassé for an unknown reason. Dupré found the italic styles especially charming and discovered the family was probably the mythical Ollière Garamond cut from 1914. He obtained low resolution scans of the typeface and used them, rather than high resolution scans, as the basis for his new type family. This allowed Dupré the mental freedom to experiment and remix as he saw fit, culminating in a contemporary family with heritage. As seen in the simplistic rectangular serifs, Garalda is a humanist slab serif, but with a mix of angles and curves to give the classic shapes a fresh, unorthodox feeling. While almost invisible in paragraph text, these produce a graphic effect in display work. The set of ligatures in the roman and italics lend themselves to unique display use, such as creating lovely logotypes. In the italics, some swashes inspired by different historic Garamonds are included, sometimes breaking their curves to be more captivating. Just look at how the italic ‘*-s’ ligatures create ‘s’ with a cursive formation rather than merely a flowing slant. And how the roman ‘g’ link swings as wide as a trainer’s whip. These are all balanced by squared serifs in the roman to keep an overall mechanised regularity. The Garalda family comes in eight styles, includes some of the original arrows and ornaments, and speaks multiple languages for all typesetting needs, from pamphlets to fine book printing. Prêt-à-porter is a project developed as part of a series of type experiments appearing on the blog ‘Letritas’. Prêt-à-porter is a very expressive friendly font with a handwritten look, smooth curves and strong identity. Its counterforms make it a carefree, wild, cheerful, light and highly readable typeface. A 1929 German travel poster espoused the benefits of using a sleeping car with the caption “Wer Schlafwagen reist spart Zeit und Geld” (which translates to “Whoever travels in a sleeping car saves time and money”). Pictured on the poster is a passing train with the name "Mitropa" lettered on the side of a railway car in a bold, stylized font with thin slab serifs. "Mitropa" was an acronym of “Mitteleuropa” (German for Central Europe), and was used by a catering company than ran the sleeping and dining cars of numerous German railways for a good portion of the 20th Century. The lettering was modified and redrawn as Dining Car JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

JY Raj has had a lengthy gestation. The original one was a sans serif adaptation of a slab serif typeface design by Jure Stojan. Raj looked instantly better as a sans serif. After refining it further one lengthy night in 2001, he showed the drafts to Jack Yan, who completed the character sets and finished the kerning. A characterful sans serif, JY Raj pushes the boundaries of what is possible with various geometric shapes, combining legibility and tradition with sharp, unexpected angles. As with Stojan's earlier JY Koliba, it possesses a delightful balance, thanks to the designer's eye for detail and typographic harmony. The name has little to do with the Asian subcontinent: it translates to paradise in Stojan's mother tongue, Slovenian.

Ulises is a modern serif typefamily that comes in 9 weights plus matching italics. Beautiful typefaces such as Shift, Brioni, Skolar and Malaga inspired this project. Our goal was to create an eclectic slab serif with some grotesques features, which provides a wider range where Ulises can be used. Therefore this typefamily is perfectly suited for headlines and small text sizes. Ulises contains alternative glyphs, fraction, superscript, subscripts and special numbers. Ciutadella Rounded is not only a font with soft corners, it has a real rounded terminal across all the weights. It was a challenge to achieve a rounded effect in close counters characters, especially in the heaviest weights where there is less space available to accommodate the round ending. Suitable to be used across a wide range of applications, from identity systems to publications. It is available in Open Type format and includes Alternate Characters (‘a’, ‘t’ and ‘&’), Ligatures, Tabular Figures, Fractions, Numerators, Denominators, Superiors and Inferiors.
