This font is my first attempt at typeface design. It is based on my own handwriting and I tried to maintain the natural quality, where the letters are quite loose, some going in different directions, thickness and position. It has Open Type features including contextual alternatives, stylistic sets and ligatures. Trying to maintain natural quality of handwriting each glyph has four styles which randomly appear when you type. For example, when there are double letters, the two letters are slightly different. You may also switch off the random feature and use the four styles on their own. The many alternates are best activated in OpenType-aware programs, such as Word 2010, Illustrator CS4+, InDesign CS4+ and QuarkXpress 7+.

Bakeshop is a casual script font family. It is drawn with rounded marker so the contrast is quite low. It has bumps at the end of strokes where the pen has stopped and the ink has spread. Bakeshop includes three weights and has both connecting and non-connecting versions. Connecting Bakeshop versions has OpenType features like Final Forms, looping connections with lowercase e, high connecting stroke with ascenders and plenty of discretionary ligatures. You can enable Final Forms either enabling Final Form feature or Contextual Alternates. If you want to use the high connection strokes with ascenders enable Stylistic Alternates or Stylistic Set 2. And if you like to use the ligatures just enable Discretionary Ligatures feature.

This font was created inspired from a handwritten copy of the "Brief story of the second journey in Canada" (1535) by French explorer Jacques Cartier. It is an early "Civilité" manual style, closely looking like the "Civilité" script font carved by Robert Granjon a few years later and still strongly influenced by blackletters forms, clearly visible in the capitals or long s, d, e, f or t forms. (Look at our "1557 Civilite Granjon Pro" and the latest "1638 Civilite Manual"). Released on the occasion of the 2012 London Olympics, Olympukes 2012 was a new set of pictograms telling the ‘real’ story of the Olympics and extending the unofficial project that began in 2004. The occasion of the London games provided an opportunity to revisit the complex contradictions of the modern Olympics and to acknowledge the geopolitical shifts of the intervening eight years. The 2012 games arrived at a time of great economic and political uncertainty for the nation and Europe. Greece – the host of the 2004 games – was now located at Ground Zero of a disintegrating Eurozone and the United Kingdom was two years into a programme of austerity enacted by the coalition government of Conservatives and Liberal Democrats. Given that the previous London Olympics had been held in 1948, in a climate of recovery and austerity after a devastating World War (1948’s Olympiad was dubbed the ‘Austerity Games’) there was a sick irony to the 2012 games' arrival. The suppression of human rights in order to deliver the perfect games for PRoC’s Beijing games shocked no-one and yet, in London, the security measures seemed grossly excessive. Then again, in a country with an estimated 1.8 million cctv cameras, perhaps we shouldn’t have been so surprised. Another aspect of the Olympics that returned for 2012 was the unfettered commercialism – if you think the Games are about pure sport, about noble human endeavour, think again. I've been learning to read Cyrillic and Greek letters lately, mainly because I've been playing the game GeoGuessr. (If you haven't played it, I highly recommend! It plops you down somewhere in the world in Google Street View, and you have to figure out where you are.) Cyrillic shows up in so many more places than Russia! You can see it in Bulgaria, Mongolia, Serbia, Montenegro, Kyrgyzstan, and more. Because of that, I made sure to include a fun double-uppercase version of those alphabet sets in Sleepy Bear. They're styled the same way as the Latin characters: all uppercase height, with some lowercase-styled letters thrown in at that same height for a fun look for all ages. I've also made two weights of Sleepy Bear: a plump and smooth regular weight, and a lighter weight that's built to stack on top of the regular (though you can use it on its own). Just type out a word in Sleepy Bear, copy it, and then change the copy to Sleepy Bear Light. You'll get a great outline look in seconds! Ablati is the commercial release of the font designed during the production of our new font design book, “Practical Font Design”. It is a new serif font in my continuing objective of designing book fonts that I can really use. In many ways, Ablati is a very different direction for me. Designed to produce gaphics to use in the font design book, I was forced to really reconsider many of my working methods to make them work for outside readership. Like all designers, my internal design processes can get really sloppy. The book helped me clean up my act. Taking my inspiration from one of my favorite fonts of all time {though I've never really been able to use it much}, Romic, by Colin at Letraset, I decided to design a unilateral serif font. In most ways, this is a normal serif for me in that it has caps, lowercase, small caps with the appropriate figures for each case. Here is another design by jewelry designer Max Joseph Gradl. Zier is a verb, meaning to decorate, adorn or ornament; zierlich means decorative, elegant, fine, neat. Schrift means type. Zierschrift, therefore, means decorative type. Gradl Zierschriften is a decorative type in the Art Nouveau style, rather than the more ornate Victorian style. Very modern, very young, with an elegant simplicity of form. Maria Makela, in her book The Munich Secession (Princeton 1990) suggests that the frequent use of simple, flowing, organic forms that was so characteristic of Art Nouveau was a reaction against the growing complexity and rapid urbanization that resulted from 19th century industrialization. In keeping with that reaction is the hand-drawn quality that intentionally rejects a mechanistic mathematic precision of line rendering. Gradl Zierschriften preserves that hand-drawn quality. Designed with upper case only, this face was obviously intended for short headlines only and is best set at 18 points or larger. However, I don't think you really get to experience the grace of this design until you get to 36 points or more. In the larger sizes, it is simply stunning. Please note that while most of the uppercase letterforms are repeated in the lower case for convenience, the ‘F’,‘L’ and ‘T’ are rendered a little narrower than in the uppercase to provide for visual variety. The font also includes a generous supply of ligatures for just the right fit ... and just for the fun of using them. Three common ways of inserting a ligature, accented letter or other special character are: 1) Key in “ALT”+“0”+[ascii #]; for example ALT+0233 for the e-acute, 2) From within your application program, go to the INSERT menu and look for something like “Insert Symbol,” (this function is NOT available in all application programs) & 3) Cut & Paste from the CHARACTER MAP display that has been supplied by every generation of Windows Operating System that I can recall (All Programs>Accessories>System Tools).
