Peter Schmidt, well-known designer from Hamburg, browsed in a fashion magazine on a return flight from the United States. At that time he was thinking about a logo for a philharmonic orchestra. In the magazine, he noticed some interesting typography. He removed the page from the magazine and sent it later to Peter Langpeter. That was the inspiration for the creation of the logo. Since Peter Langpeter really liked the classic aesthetics of the resulting letters, he developed a whole new alphabet of it. Initially, only capital letters. The sans serif linear antiqua Maxima which was created in the beginning of the sixties by Prof. Gert Wunderlich for Typoart Dresden, was newly actualized in 2007 after more than 45 years. Many hands and heads were involved in the successful re-design of Maxima Now over a period of two years to assist the designers of the Elsner+Flake Design Studios in Hamburg, and the typeface family is now available. The re-design happened in close cooperation with Wunderlich who has given support to numerous projects in Elsner+Flake’s studio in Hamburg. A great deal of care was given to the necessary preliminary tasks such as the viewing of the original designs and print tests, the analysis of the digital Typoart data which had been in the possession of Elsner+Flake since 1985 and 1989, and a design conceptualization based on detail correlations, as well as the extension of the character complement. It had been Elsner+Flake’s goal to include as many of the existing Maxima cuts into the re-design program as possible. The result is an extended font family with 25 weights in EuropaPlus layout.

Here's a flashback to the sixties, which originally went by the rather unimaginative name of Triline. It's available in two versions: regular and swash caps. In the swash version, the uppercase Q is a "Qu" ligature; a plain Q is located in the ASCII circumflex position (SHIFT+6 on PC or Mac). Named for the heroine of a medieval romance. The Postscript and Truetype versions contain a complete Latin language character set (Unicode 1252); in addition, the Opentype version supports Unicode 1250 (Central European) languages as well.

The Elzeviriano Ibarra or 'Ibarra Gans' was a typography engraved by Carl Winkow in 1931 to Fundición Gans commemorating 50 years since the foundation thereof. It is designed to be used in the book-homage The Maestro Joaquín Ibarra . This type is a combination of the printers selected by Joaquín Ibarra, Spanish printer and typographer and Ezelvir family types, hence its compound classification. Gans Ibarra, designed in 2006 by Paulo W follow the concepts from the original designs from Fundicion Gans. I've had an interest in typography ever since my college days, even submitting my NDD thesis on the subject. The basic concept for this typeface stems from that early creative period, hence the obvious 60’s retro feel. It’s only recently that I've have had the chance to carry through fully some of my dormant typographic ideas, but ‘better late than never’ as they say! The font’s characteristic style is based on repeating or rotating templates of a half and a quarter circle, the geometric, modular building blocks used here. The name was simply influenced by the letter ‘u’, which visually describes a stylized ‘tulip’ flower.

The first three weights of the family were designed at ParaType (ParaGraph) in 1997 by Dmitry Kirsanov . They were based on the artworks of Moscow graphic designer Andrey Kryukov (1923-1997). The original version was developed by Kryukov at the end of the sixties for Russian railways. The proportions and elements of construction were inspired by Eurostile (1962) by Aldo Novarese. It is intended for use in advertising and display typography. In 2009, Dmitry added the new styles, corrected the old ones, and enhanced them with extended character sets.

It was during his many years in Congress that he assured his legacy, not least because of his long, masterful oratory opposing slavery. His speeches, in fact, won him the nickname "Old Man Eloquent." So when I decided to simulate Adams's penmanship in his legendary diary (which he kept for nearly 70 years), it seemed fitting to call the font by that name. I focused on his handwriting from about 1810, when he was Ambassador to Russia, but also consulted pages from later years. Old Man Eloquent has both regular and bold weights. The OpenType version has more than 450 glyphs, including alternate uppercase characters, old-style and lining figures, and numerous ligatures; all formats contain several common (English) words.

Lumina combines a fluid, informal look with an upright, fairly formal character structure. The font is reminiscent of leaded or stained glass, suggesting a trying to-be-solid outline with flowing inner spaces. Characters are softened by the use of staggered heights and slightly irregular widths, creating the impression of hand-crafted, ink-drawn shapes. Lumina is unusual in that it gives a medieval treatment to a modern character outline. The outline has been given an irregular, slightly hand-crafted look that is at variance with its modern character and hints at both the informality of a grunge font and the carefully hand-drawn quality of medieval illuminated scripts (hence its name). It is one of the few informal, compressed fonts that retains a high degree of legibility. Martin Crantz (or sometimes Krantz) of the three, including Ulrich Gering and Michael Friburger, that set up a press at the Sorbonne in 1470 was likely the fellow who had the technical know how how to cast the type itself, hence the name of this new face that is based on his work. This font has been expanded to meet the demands of modern day use but it also contains a number of specialized glyphs that allow for the recreation of text in the manner of his day with such characters as the -rum abbreviation and other handy Renaissance oddities. Since this face was designed prior to 1501 there is no italic variant in keeping with the spirit of historical accuracy.

My latest book production group is quite conservative. I discovered my need for a pair of headline fonts with the same vertical metrics which are looser and more lively. Since the serif family is Biblia Serif, and the Sans family is Draetha [which is Welch for preach], Araldo [which is Italian for herald] makes sense to me. Narrow has my normal set of Opentype features with small caps, small cap figures, and the rest of the figure sets. Bold is too heavy for small caps, without messing with the metrics. So, it has the normal figure sets, plus a decent set of discretionary ligatures. They both work well, and are meeting my need for a headline family to add to the book production group.
