Manuel, a simple, almost mathematically constructed typeface, includes stylistic alternates for a number of upper case characters. This comes in very helpful when designing logo letterings. Manuel(a) is a very charming, self-confident und exciting typeface design. The idea was to try to apply a given design criteria (also see Volker Schnebel's Marita and Martin fonts) to every single character. In other words, start with a character and develop all of the others from it. This is quite easy for some characters but extremely difficult for others. This process generates creativity and the characters move away from the initial constructed sketch. Together in a typeface, the individual characters are now all of a piece and character.

Just like my previous typefaces, my new one, Smooth Buggaloo, also finds its roots in music. The Boogaloo was a popular music style in the 60s, a mixture of Latin and Rock and Roll music. Later Salsa took over this genre. Latin music represents a vibrant, lively and an uncontrollable need to move. In Smooth Buggaloo, you will recognize a swing, flair and a hint of seduction. But despite its vibrancy it can also be understood as a serious, simple and clean typeface. The characters vary between a handwritten and a designed look. Smooth Buggaloo is very suitable for any graphic purpose, like logo- and poster design and it can also be used for longer texts.

The pages of vintage type foundry catalogs yield so much wonderful type design and artwork. Found within their pages are hundreds of classic text and display faces alongside delicately engraved cuts as well as print shop borders, ornaments and embellishments. These books are treasure troves of their respective times, and Typesetter Ornaments JNL preserves some of that art in digital form. Redrawn from this source material are twenty-six basic design elements that include corner pieces, end pieces, pointing hands, spot illustrations and other designs. Also included are old style parentheses, brackets, an Rx (prescription symbol), two cent signs and a few extra elements located on the number keys and their caps shift counterparts.

I have always been fascinated by the ‘Full English Breakfast’. A Full English usually consists of toast, baked beans, sausages, fried eggs, fried tomatoes, fried mushrooms and sometimes blackpudding (a kind of sausage made from pig’s blood). When I lived in England, my friends were always quite happy to stow away a big full breakfast, but I, on the other hand, could not really set myself to eating one. Full English is a hand made stencil font. If you own a pub and you serve breakfast, you could use it for your signs, but I guess this font looks good on anything that needs a bit of attention. For attention, it will get!

CHICAGO MOONSHINE is an Art Deco serif All Caps display font. Please note that this is primarily for headlines, logos posters in large size. A clean sans serif, originally constructed as a proprietary font for a German IT-company. From the beginning it was designed to work both in print and on screen and experience shows that it performs well in both environments. First released as a commercial typeface with GarageFonts in 2002 and later with the Fountain Type Foundry (2004). During 2007-08 the family was expanded and upgraded into a full OpenType Pro package. The company Jura have since long used Stalemate as part of thier corporate identity. They have also licensed special versions with full support for Greek and Cyrillic languages. This will be available as a commercial option in the near future.

Although initially designed as a rational/geometric font, Triplex developed into one of Zuzana Licko's most intuitive typeface designs at the time. Its first extensive use was in Emigre magazine #14, a special issue devoted to Swiss designers published in 1990. Triplex was intended as a friendly substitute for Helvetica. The name Triplex refers to the three versions that make up the entire family; Triplex, Triplex Serif and Triplex Italic. Each version of the typeface comes in light, bold and extra bold. The italic was designed and drawn by type designer and sign painter John Downer, and was designed to work with both the serif and sans serif versions. See also Triplex Italic OT.

On October 12th 1976 a new basilica was inaugurated in honor and in gratitude to the Patron Saint, the Virgin of Guadalupe, loved by the Mexican people. This basilica was designed by the Mexican architect Pedro Ramírez Vázquez (died on April 16th 2012). It stands out by its hug spacious interior, generously decorated with bronze elements. The aesthetic value of these items even includes many signs and text inscriptions in a particular typeface and style, of which this font is a reinterpretation. The purpose of this project is to revival this eclesiastical written letter forms in bronze and taking them to digital format. I was inspired to this on my last trip to Mexico in September of 2012.

Annonce is a digitization and expansion of a 1912 Johannes Wagner Foundry classic called Aurora Grotesk, which also circulated later on in metal under the name Annonce. Bold, extended and clear as a bell, Annonce stood out as the definite big sign font long before the Helveticas of the world. With angled cuts on some of the letters, it also shows humanistic traits that make it more appealing than any other face in its genre. The Annonce set comes in two fonts, a regular and an italic, and includes a very large character set that accommodates almost all Latin-based languages, including Turkish, Baltic, Celtic, Maltese, Esperanto, and the languages of Central and Eastern Europe.

As long as there’s been movie theaters, those establishments became the perfect hideaway for couples who wanted to kiss, hug and snuggle without the watchful eyes of disapproving parents or the pesky attention of younger siblings. Such was evident in the [13 word] title of the 1919 composition “Take Your Girlie to the Movies (If You Can’t Make Love at Home)”. On the sheet music for this song, it is hand lettered in the Art Nouveau fashion of the time by a round nib pen, and made a perfect candidate to be redrawn as a digital typeface. The end result is Nouveau Theme JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Videomax looks like something from the future - perhaps even something from a future where the world lies in ruins and is about to be taken over by hostile aliens. Egon is a contemporary Slab-Serif typeface family built in ten styles—extra-light, light, regular, bold and black weights in roman and italic respectably. This is a refreshed (second) edition of Egon Serif, originally designed in 2008. The typeface has been updated—four new styles in ExtraLight and Black weights were added to the family and minor adjustments to glyph shapes (mostly italics) have been made.The typeface is designed with industrial and architectural flavor, as homage to Egon Eiermann, one of Germany’s great architects of 20th century. Egon is ideal as text and display font for publication use. Egon is released as OpenType single master with a Western CP1252 character set.

Zebrawood font is a joint work of the typeface designers K.B. Chansler, C. Crossgrove and C. Twombly, who also designed Rosewood, Ponderose and Pepperwood together. Like its relatives, Zebrawood also displays a kind of Wild West character. Its style can be traced back to the Toscanienne typefaces which appeared in advertisements and on signs at the end of the 19th century. Typical of this capital alphabet are the split serifs and robust base forms, which emphasize the typeface's decorative character. Zebrawood is, like Rosewood and Schwennel, meant as a bicolor font, meaning that the weight Zebrawood fill complements the inner spaces of Zebrawood regular. When used carefully in headlines, Zebrawood font will be sure to attract attention.

Kamerik 105 is inspired by the classic, geometric sans-serifs such as Futura and Avant Garde, but has shallower ascenders and descenders for a more compact look. It's a versatile, modern sans, highly legible as a text font and with a clean, elegant look as a display font at larger sizes. It includes old style non-aligning (lower case) numbers, both proportional and tabular and accented characters for Central European languages. The Kamerik 105 family comprises of six weights, and is closely related to Kamerik 205. The most notable differences between the two variations, are the single-storey lower case a and g in Kamerik 105, where they are two-storey in Kamerik 205.

I had a really weird dream the other night, but when I woke up, I had forgotten it. I had the feeling it was about something important, but I cannot, for the life of me, recall what I dreamt about! Forgotten Dream is a horror brush font, which I made with a brushy brush and Chinese ink. It looks like something right out of a nightmare, but you can also use it for something important. Like a ‘keep your distance’ poster, or a sign about the importance of washing ones hands. But then again, if you play in a death metal band, then Forgotten Dream font could be exactly what you need for your album cover!

Maria Martina Schmitt was born in Vienna, Austria in 1950. Since 1998, she has been working as a freelance designer, focusing on cultural collateral, economic publications, illustration, type design, and logo design. Airam blends contemporary legibility with historic blackletter forms, creating a contemporary text face that speaks to the old European past. Airam certainly appears darker than most other contemporary text faces. Airam’s letterforms are slightly broken, too. They display angled joints in lieu of smooth curves. This “broken” aspect actually aids legibility at smaller point sizes. While Airam may not be suitable for setting whole books or newspapers, this font will add a splendid touch to short tracts of small text. Additionally, Airam looks superb in large headlines.

Tiblisi is a font designed to emulate the feel of modern Georgian Script, which is called Mkhedruli. In earlier periods of her history, the Georgian language had several other alphabets, notably the Asomtavruli alphabet and the Nuskha-khucuri alphabet. The first printed material in the Georgian language, in the Mkhedruli alphabet, was published in 1669. Since then the alphabet has changed very little, though a few letters were added in the 18th century, and 5 letters were dropped in the 1860s. The font was named Tiblisi in honor of the nation's captial city. Tiblisi comes with full punctuation, a complete character set for most Western European languages that are based on the Latin Alphabet, and full kerning.

The idea of Transport originates from text found on the large wooden boxes used for transport. Such text is still stencilled on them in the same way as the companies have done for decades, at least. That explains the typeface's name, too. If you find some similarities with Devin, you are right. Transport is nothing other than a special variant of Devin. But since the two are aimed for totally different uses, I decided to use two different names for them. Transport is a mecane and its use is primarily as a headline typeface. But in small quantities it can be used even for body setting, if special effects are desired. Transport was released in 1994.

Simple - The Bilingual Font. The process of Simple began with the usual alphabets followed by a series of icons and soon it was an avalanche of Chinese characters. The pool of proposed Chinese characters were loosely determined by the needs of a lunar calender. In a nutshell, Simple is a single-weight, minimal, grid-based Sans-serif display. Prudent with details and sturdy in form, the geometrically-driven structure marks the foundation of a cross-cultural assortment of Latin alphabets, Chinese characters and thematic icons. Grimoire on the other hand combines two seemingly contradicting principles — calligraphic and constructive ideas — and makes them work together. The font is based on a modular system but simulates a handwritten typeface. Rotulo is a contrasted sans family which combines the Thick & Thin signpainter's style and some 70s feeling in a huge font family with 90 styles. A visit to an exhibition of Spanish movie posters by Jano was the beginning of Rótulo (Spanish for Sign) project. Classic thick & thin signpainter style was featured in many letterings of those posters, as it was a very common style in 60s and 70s Spanish design. Unfortunately, today very few Contrasted Sans are seen, something that was quite common years ago has fallen into disuse in favor of Helvetic monotony. Rótulo recapture all that personality, with an extense range of weights and widths to be used in striking headlines and short texts.

Aeronic is a work of love. I stumbled upon a fantastic Japanese poster for Nikke Coat by Gihachiro Okuyama (1907 - 1981). Gihachiro Okuyama (also: Okayama) was a very prolific Japanese print artist who started his career making woodblock prints, but later moved on to posters and advertisements. I tried to recreate the hand lettering in the original 1937 Nikke Coat poster, but since I had to work with a few glyphs only, I designed the remaining ones myself. The outline of Aeronic is rather thin, with thicker bits in some glyphs. It is quite rough in places, but it all adds to its unique look. Aeronic comes with a bonanza of diacritics.
