DIN Serif: Specimen Manual PDF The DIN Type System: A Comparison Table This is the first ever release of a true serif companion for the popular DIN typeface. DIN Serif originated in a custom project for a watchmaking journal which required a modern serif to work in unison and match the inherent simplicity of DIN. As a result, a solid, confident and well-balanced typeface was developed which is simple and neutral enough when set at small sizes, but sturdy and powerful when set at heavier weights and bigger sizes. It utilizes the skeleton of the original DIN and retains its basic proportions such as x-height, caps height and descenders, whereas ascenders were slightly increased. DIN Serif makes no attempt to impress with ephemeral nifty details on individual letters, but instead it concentrates on a few modern, functional and everlasting novelties which express an overall distinct quality on the page and set it apart from most classic romans. This is a low contrast typeface with vertical axis and squarish form which brings out a balance between simplicity and legibility. Its narrow proportions offer economy of space which is critical for newspaper body text and headlines. At small sizes the text has an even texture, it is comfortable and highly readable. The serifs are narrow at heavy weights and when tight typesetting is applied at large sizes, the heavier weights become ideal for headlines. DIN Serif was inspired by late 19th century Egyptian and earlier transitional roman faces. Bracketed serifs were placed on the upper part of the letterforms (this is where we mostly concentrate our attention when we read) whereas small clean square serifs were placed on and under the baseline to simplify the letterforms. In order to reduce visual tension at the joins and make reading smooth and comfortable, a slight hint of bracketed serif was added at the joins in the form of a subtle angular tapered serif, which softens the harsh angularity. These angular tapered serifs tend to disappear at smaller sizes (or smooth out the joins) but stand out at bigger sizes exuding a strong, modern and energetic personality. What started out as a custom 2 weight family, it has developed into a full scale superfamily with 10 styles from Regular to ExtraBlack along with their italics. Additional features were added such as small caps, alternate letters and numbers as well as numerous symbols for branding, signage and publishing. All weights were meticulously hinted for excellent display performance on the web. Finally, DIN Serif supports more that 100 languages such as those based on the Latin, Greek and Cyrillic alphabet.

Manito was designed by Garrett Boge in 1989. He employed a wide pen and angular, sturdy forms to simulate rough-hewn woodcut letters. The font, consisting of both capitals and small caps, provides an ideal graphic complement to collateral of a natural or environmental character. It is named after a native American word for 'Great Spirit'.

Few fonts reach the goal of simulate properly the hand writing aspect. Based on the hand writing of Manuel Corradine, Corradine Handwriting fonts have a lot of automatized alternates and ligatures that give them a natural hand writing feeling. Initially we were offering just the upright version of Corradine Handwriting but now here is the nice italic version.

The pattern for this classic typeface was originally called "Viking Oldstyle", from the 1909 H.C. Hansen Type Foundry catalog. To enhance its weathered look, the inside corners have been rounded to simulate ink buildup on metal typeforms. Both versions of the font include 1252 Latin and 1250 CE (with localization for Romanian and Moldovan) character sets.

Amike is a natural handwritten font, simulating a very neat, clean handwriting. It works well both as mixed case and all caps. It includes alternates for most characters, that can be used for a random mix using the Contextual Alternates Opentype feature to create a natural written look. It supports a wide character set, including most European languages & Vietnamese.

Celluloid JNL was modeled from a few samples shown in a 1947 sales catalog for changeable letter directory boards and the various styles available for these signs. Prior to modern plastics, celluloid was the material used for these molded letters. Aside from the Regular and Oblique versions, there is also Celluloid Highlight JNL and Celluloid Highlight Oblique JNL.

El Franco is a family designed by Ethan Dunham that represents what Roman lettering looked like in the 16th century. Derived from a typographic sample of Francisco Lucas, 1577, this font captures the feeling of rustic times. It comes in two versions regular and distressed. The distressed version has been weathered to appear old and worn.

We saw a zigzag type like this made in the 1860s. We copied the idea, but added stars to make it patriotic. As with many highly specialized fonts, you won't want to use this every day but certainly, like other "stars and stripes" types, it implies something about the message even before one reads the words.

A small book entitled “Portfolio of Alphabet Designs for Artists, Architects, Designers & Craftsmen” [published in 1938 by Irene K. Ames] contained a number of pages displaying hand lettered alphabet examples. One sample in particular stood out for its bold Art Deco look and unusual design. This is now available as Dance Moderne JNL, in both regular and oblique versions.

Open Range is a new font design based on an old classics sans serif font from the 1800s. Some may say that this font looks like a western version of the more modern Benguiat but samples of lettering from the 1800s show a similar design to Benguiat and may have been the inspiration for that font.

Zampichi simulates an old school video game or halftone print. Nine futuristic styles are delivered in gritty pixelated format. Dingbats such as cursor symbols, radio buttons, checkboxes and (surprisingly) cats replace a few of the least useful alternate symbols. Zampichi is extended, containing West European diacritics and ligatures, making it suitable for multilingual environments and publications.

Kidela Sketch is an energetic and eccentric serif typeface rendered in a sketchy style. As its name implies, Photina was created specifically for phototypesetting, the technology that preceded digital and laser typesetting. Photina was designed by Jose Mendoza y Almeida in 1971 and was the third face made by the Monotype Corporation for phototypesetting systems. Its high typographic quality, robustness, and refined detail have made Photina popular for magazine and book text.

Meatball is a fat and happy display font based on some lettering on a mid-20th century poster for the movie Bringing Up Baby. The lettering for the names of the stars, AudryHepburn, Cary Grant and Charles Ruggles, was the basis for Meatball. The sample was all caps and as it evolved, a lower case started to appear, etc.

A display font with expanded width, bold weight is cultivated with high contrast in strokes, suitable for ephemeral design applications. It simulates the impact of cut tools with paper, cloth, and comes along with a feeling of geometric suggestions. It was there that Fernando became engrossed in the collection of early metal type, matrices, punches and type samples by figures such as Garamond and Granjon. So much so that he took on the mighty task of developing ‘a beautiful, functional, serifed text font’ of his own. Heroic FS Brabo’s journey from sketch to font family took an epic three years, starting in Antwerp, continuing at Fontsmith in London, and reaching its conclusion back in Fernando’s home city of São Paulo. No wonder Fernando was reminded of another titanic face-off: that of Antwerp’s Roman hero of legend, Silvius Brabo, and the evil ogre, Antigoon. Brabo came to the town’s rescue after the tyrannical giant had been charging ships’ captains extortionate taxes and chopping off the hands of those who refused to pay up. Having finally downed Antigoon after a long and terrible duel, Brabo cut off the giant’s own hand and threw it into the river Scheldt, unwittingly giving the town its name: the Dutch for ‘hand-throw’ is hand werpen. What better way for Fernando to name his literary typeface than after the hero of Antwerp’s oldest tale? The garalde factor FS Brabo is not a revival, but a very much a contemporary, personal interpretation of a garalde – a class of typeface originating in the 16th century that includes Bembo, Garamond and Plantin, with characteristically rounded serifs and moderate contrast between strokes.
