In spite of its angular appearance, Origami is composed almost exclusively of curves. Designer Carl Crossgrove derived the typeface from experiments in designing a low resolution type. The purpose of this monospace font is to display braille in an original although rather steganographic way. Its glyphs are built from a flat hexagon which can be read as 3 rows of 2 vertices (i.e. regular braille glyph grid). The initial design is illustrated by glyphs 'ç' (no dot) and 'û' (6 dots) as shown by poster 5. Glyphs are connected to each other, thus 6 connections for each hexagon (2 on left/right and 4 on top/bottom). In the final design many diagonal segments of the hexagon were removed for esthetical reason. Text is displayed not as a honeycomb but as a lattice instead which mixes hexagons, squares and "irregular convex octagons" (mostly unclosed), the design favored squares over octagons. The whole slightly resembling a PCB. Text can be framed with 3 sets of Frame glyphs (as shown in Poster 4): Octagonal: { €, °, £, µ, §, ¥, ~, ¢ } which can be mixed with Rectangular High Rectangular Low: { è, é, ê, ï, î, à, â, ä } Rectangular High: { Â, ù, Ä, Ê, Ë, ô, õ, ë } which can be mixed with Octagonal NB: When using Frame glyphs, it is advised to show Pilcrow (¶) and Non Breaking Space, which are replaced by empty shapes (e.g. in Microsoft Word, use CTRL+8 or use [¶] button in the ribbon).

In the basic version of the typeface, all glyphs have simple chopped shapes, created according to the usual geometric principles. In the alternative version of TT Tunnels, which becomes available when you turn on OpenType feature stylistic alternates or stylistic set 1, the typeface comes to life and turns into a stylized ductal gothic grotesque, in which the design of glyph forms is created based on the pen movements. Despite the fact that TT Tunnels was created as a display typeface for use in short inscriptions and titles, it works very interestingly in the body text, adding a small touch of archaics. This is especially evident in the Bold and Black faces, when the rhythm and thickness of the strokes create a dense set, covering the paper with a solid, dense pattern. The density and style of such a set conceptually refers us to the old Gothic texture and the Old Slavonic script. In addition to a larger number of alternates for lowercase letters, the typeface features an alternate for number 2, an alternate slashed zero, many ligatures, and other useful OpenType features (ordn, frac, sinf, sups, numr, dnom, case, tnum, onum, pnum, liga, salt, ss01, zero). The name suggests it: the Chiq is based on a well-known system font from Apple's classic Mac OS operating system. By revamping and expanding good old “Chicago“, I want to make that 90s tech charm available for the future. The model consisted of just a single style and inspired me to create “Chiq Bold,” which later became the starting point for the entire font family. The shapes of the Chiq are constructed according to a very simple principle. The contrast of stems and hairlines becomes more pronounced towards the bolder cuts. A few basic shapes form the framework for all characters. The shapes are very regular and sometimes form somewhat unusual figures, which has a negative effect on readability and makes the font rather unsuitable for long passages of text, but results in a very even typeface. This is particularly true for the extra-wide “UltraExpanded,” which is so wide that you can no longer recognize word images but literally have to spell them out. In this way, words are turned into letter bands with a great decorative effect. With variants from “Light” to “Black”, from “Normal” to “Ultra Expanded” and the italics, Chiq reaches beyond its archetype. This opens up a wide range of uses. It is even clearer, even more sober, and to a certain extent speaks an even more modern formal language. Chiq is also a variable font!
