The name ‘Linkus’ makes reference to the internet and its power to unite humanity, as well as to Linkus’ distinctive design, where the whole character is unified by a single, unbroken line – without sacrificing its elegance and readability. Linkus is based on the aesthetic decision of having a single, unsplit line forming every character, with a smooth transition of the different line directions, in order to strenghten the unity of form and create a singular fluxus throughout the glyph. Different from most other futuristic fonts (e.g. Slazer), who have an aggressive look, Linkus has a more sensible, refined aura. This display futuristic typeface is meant to be used whenever the subject is technology, cellphones, electronics, internet, computers or science in general, as Linkus creates a feeling of modernity, cleanness, efficiency and high-tech sophistication.

The idea behind Nolan is to create emotional response due to its inviting character and legibility. It is ideal for headlines, presentations, product signage and bespoke logotypes. Due to the structure of the letters, Nolan can also stand its ground in body text, although this is not its primary purpose. Nolan is created slightly wider than what is to be expected from a typical sans font, yet not to the point of being considered a wide typeface. Nolan has a large x-height, so as to deliver a better punch and be legible at a glance . Its clean and modern lines are reminiscent of architectural aesthetic.

Skeletal Wish is a line from one of my favourite Opeth songs: Heir Apparent. The lyrics are pretty veiled and bleak, describing the destruction and downfall of something that once was beautiful. I am worried about what is happening with our planet: the Amazon forest is burning down, our oceans are full of plastic and the earth is warming up. I had to think of this when I created Skeletal Wish and I thought the title was perfect. Skeletal Wish is a heavy and scary halloween font. It comes with blobs, splatter, gore and whatever else you may need for your designs. It won’t help save the Amazon rainforest, nor will it stop the flow of marine plastic, but you could use it to create a protest sign. After all, the change begins with you.

Red Tape is three fonts that were designed by sticking letters together with red tape. It makes for a wonderful makeshift set of fonts. And I really enjoyed sticking those letters together. Of course I did it on screen using bits and pieces of scanned red tape. As as a computer programmer, it is my job to stare at screens of text all day. For my first font, I completed a simple monospaced font, Debug, based on my own handwriting. Mickey Mono is much more ambitious: I wanted a humanist design - something with organic curves. It had to be clean and fresh. It had to have the advantages of Debug, like distinctive numerals (to distinguish between 8 and 3) and huge punctuation characters (so I could read complicated Perl one liners). Mickey Mono would be a good friend to me as I struggled through difficult coding tasks. It has a wide range of Latin Extended characters and diacritics, so it can speak French, Portuguese, and Ruby. Flexion developed out of design philosophy and ambigramatic artwork of John Langdon. Based on the contents in John’s book Wordplay, author Dan Brown hired John to create ambigrams for his forthcoming novel Angels & Demons. Mr. Brown was so impressed with his work he even named the main character Robert Langdon after John. After the success of Angels & Demons, Dan Brown wrote The Da Vinci Code. When the movie adaptation of that book was in the works, Dan suggested that John create titles for the movie based on ambigrams. John contacted Hal Taylor to create a font based on the lettering treatment to be used for the credits at the end of the movie. Unfortunately, it was decided that the film was running long and the original title concept was scrapped. By this time, Hal was well into developing a full type family, including small caps, alternate characters, lining and ranging figures. John was impressed with the way the design was turning out and decided that it had enough merit to be released as Flexion.
