Worthington Arcade is a classically-proportioned capitals-only type incorporating a selection of ligatures and alternates. It loosely resembles the hand-painted architectural lettering of the 30s to the 50s, exemplified by the likes of Percy Smith’s interior signage for the BBC or George Mansell’s lettering for the University of London and the signs found on London’s bridges. However, rather than a slavish copy of any historical model, it is more an examination and evocation of certain idiosyncratic quirks of civic lettering of the period, and an attempt to create a peculiarly English titling typeface. The round letters, for example the O, Q and C, are wider than the perfect circle usually found in such designs, while the straight-sided characters, usually drawn on a square, are narrower. Fifteen hundred years from now, a man will be selected to go back in time to prevent a catastrophic event which turned his world into a dystopia. Sent back in time, he was enveloped in empyrean fire, the strands of energy that make up time itself. Crash-landing near Astro City in late 1985, he learned how to master and channel the empyrean forces that had suffused his body -- finally learning to control his powers in time to prevent the destruction of the Space Shuttle Challenger, the event he had been sent to avert. He described himself to journalists as nothing more than "a Good Samaritan", and has continued to help his fellow man in Astro City ever since. John JG Roshell has also been struggling with the empyrean challenge of fitting all of Kurt Busiek's ASTRO CITY dialogue into balloons with the regular Samaritan font, so he created the Samaritan Tall font to help his fellow comic book letterers! It's kinda the same thing, really.

Tatty is a sans serif, monoline font that is distinguished by the gentle, rounded, backward curves on the ascenders. I created it because I had a picture in my mind of a font that I wanted to use when designing images and logos for clients' websites but I could never find one that was just exactly right. Many years ago I worked for a sign-writing company. My job was to copy and enlarge letter sets from printed copy and then cut masks for airbrushing. One morning I arrived at my desk to find that the airbrush artist had written on a rough, rubbed out, scribbled on drawing of the letter ‘a’ - “make a letter happy, make it beautiful”. That was the brief I set myself in the design of Tatty - to make every letter happy and beautiful. The result is a flowing, elegant yet simple type which I believe works particularly well for poetry.

Piambis Family has been featured in "Slanted #28 Contemporary Typefaces 2016/17" This handwritten font family that boasts great variety of glyphs - many of which are fancy alternates for standard letters (click on text written in Piambis below, then click on “Glyphs”). Anca typeface started as a comission work for Fest Anca, an international animation festival. They needed something to complement the corporate identity of the festival. Inspiration came from a sketch made by my friend long time ago, which had a tremendous potential. As letters were digitized and the basic alphabet was completed, a very practical and universal typeface resulted. The whole type family has a playful and simple look with rounded stroke endings as well as long ascenders. The construction skeleton uses the minimum number of strokes and as a consequence, some original letter shapes (Q, w, j, &, A, §) were produced. Despite the fact that most letter shapes are based on geometry, some strokes are intentionally irregular, which creates a very natural feeling. Anca is appropriate for setting short paragraphs, headings and big inscriptions.

Kongress is a typeface that includes all that is needed for building a proper corporate identity. The design relies on the use of straight lines and a squarish structure for the characters, which provides the text with a compact appearance. This feature helps to save space when required by the typographic composition. The design is also defined by wide counterforms and clean cuts for the strokes. All of this helps the shapes to adapt better to digital environments. Nevertheless, Kongress is not another techno typeface. The slight modulation of the strokes—especially in the italic letterforms—and the large apertures for most characters result in what we will call a techno-humanist style. The squarish structure of a techno-font blends with the calligraphic modulation of a humanist sans serif typeface.

Adrian Frutiger came up with this unusually purposeful and strong design in 1981 for Linotype. Early humanistic typefaces of the sixteenth century, especially Jenson, served as models for Breughel. The right sides of the stems are vertical and at right angles to the baseline while the left sides of the stem curve into the serifs, making the typeface look as though it slants to the right, and giving it a sense of movement and liveliness. Das Riese, a type specimen by the most productive Brazilian type foundry, Intellecta Design, is a mix of victorian and art deco influences. A beautiful display type for tiling with uppercases only. It's shadows and volumes refer to pre-modern age whereas its surface to last century 20's. This heavy sans serif strokes characters have a particular appearance, a parallel line texture that reminds Bifur, typeface created in 1929 by A. M. Cassandre. The sideways absence of volume at some leaning letters right side in addition to the patchy darkness of shadows support its handmade design. Sabon was designed by Jan Tschichold and released in 1967. Sabon was created in response to the specific needs of a group of German printers who wanted a typeface that would be identical in form when produced by three different metal-casting technologies. Named after Jacques Sabon, a sixteenth century typefounder whose widow married another typefounder, Konrad Berner, who is credited with issuing the first typefounder's specimen sheet. Several types on the sheet were attributed to Claude Garamond, and one of these served Tschichold as the source for Sabon roman. The italic was based on another face on Berner's sheet, cut by Robert Granjon. Tschichold's skillful adaptation of these old style faces has produced an elegant and workmanlike book face. The Sabon font family is a popular choice for setting text.

I’m glad to present my new hand-drawn typeface Blueberry Spot. The clearances in some letters are filled as if somebody put a blueberry blot in them. Also, I created the second style of this font. Base & Bloom is an experimental (but relatively organic) fusion of geometric monoline sans and high-contrast flourish didone. It was inspired by the lack of curious modern display sans as opposed to the uprise of contemporary serifs past couple of years. The idea was to incorporate flourishes not as unnecessary elements like swashes, but as a part of letter structure, which was an especially interesting task considering it was not a serif, which potentially could give more room for that. And after all, the idea pays off by generating many inventive letterform solutions. Base & Bloom has alternates for each letter (up to 11) so you can make endless combinations to find the perfect look. It is a bold choice for posters, album covers, identity and packaging, headlines, oversize typography, and editorial design.
