Impact As its name suggests, Impact, a bold sans serif, is designed to make an impression on the reader. Obviously a display font, Impact makes use of its thick strokes and blocked style, to catch and hold the eye. Because Impact is so striking, it is best placed in plenty of white space so that it does not overwhelm any accompanying text.

This font is a slightly calligraphic roman font with one major difference. In place of the upper case characters, there are decorative lower case “Drop Caps” accentuated by a decorative rendering of the alphabet in script form. As enlarged decorative caps—great for beginning paragraphs set in any number of fonts including the lower case included in the font itself.

Another unmistakable Koziupa/Paul production, Ricotta has very little baby fat for a sturdy brush script. What movement it shows is effective and integral to its expression, which is at once compact, lush and eye-catching. Ricotta, and its subtle details in just the right places, should feel at home among the bright and cheerful colors of dairy product and pizza packaging.

Cartesian is a modular typeface that gets its namesake from Descartes’s cartesian coordinate plane and Conway’s Game of Life. Each character is composed of cells that each can be considered either on or off (alive or dead.) The Cartesian family includes Cartesian Serif and Cartesian Sans Serif. Furthermore, both Cartesian Serif and Sans Serif letterforms feature two-to-one stroke contrast.

Bowling has letters on bowling pins. On the upper-case keys, the bowling pins are white with black letters and on the lower-case keys the pins are black with white letters. The lower-case letters can be colored and placed behind the upper-case letters to give two-color lettering. (The letters on the pins are from the typeface InsideLetters.)

Composed, clean and slightly angular, as its name says. It's organic, warm and round in the right places too. A sanserif typeface family Vinkel is a handsome androgyne with an excellent balance of Neo-grotesque and Humanist DNA. Black Drum is contemporary designer type, made from the struck steel hammers of an Art Deco Period san serif face transferred from a mechanical 1926 custom editor Royal Portable typewriter. Anna Conroy of Type Heritage, LLC, Philadelphia comments on Black Drum and its new place in time today: “Wow! nice lookin’ face Joseph! —Perfect, somewhere between Cable; [Rudolph Koch, 1927] (which was about the first transatlantic telegraph cable) with its raised x-height; and Futura [Paul Renner, 1928]. Yup, it has that great “Monopoly Game” question mark -- and all on a period-piece typewriter! You should have no trouble grafting that sorely needed Euro symbol.” –And he very well did! Letters that occur more often for example vowels have two or more different versions stored in the font. (➶ Figure 4) These alternative forms are exchanged automatically by the font as you type, and create a vivid look that comes close to actual handwriting. The font avoids that two identical letters are placed next to each other like, for example the two “o” in the word “look”. ➸ What Historic Sources is the Font based on? Two historic documents were used to base the font on. The notes Luther took before giving his speech in Worms in 1521 and a 6 page letter he wrote immediately after to Emperor Charles V., summarising his speech (➶ Figure 2). Both documents have been added to the UNESCO “Memory of the World” and can be seen at the Google Arts and Culture website. ➸ The Creation of a Handwriting Font The creation of a handwriting font is very different from the creation of a regular font. Harald Geisler has specialised in recreating handwriting in preceding projects with Albert Einstein’s, Sigmund Freud’s and his own handwriting. His experience working with Archives and Museums has gone into this project. First Geisler analyses the movement in the writing to understand how each letter is drawn. This involves partially learning how to write like a person. In this process not the outlines of the sample are reproduced but the original movement path of the handwriting (➶ Figure 3). In a second step width and contrast is added to reproduce Martin Luther’s characteristic impetus and the writing tools used at the time. Some Glyphs can not be found in 500 year old manuscripts, for example the @-sign. Towards the end of the creation one collects a profund amount of details about how a writer moves on paper and addresses certain tasks moving the pen. Keeping this knowledge in mind an improvisation can be based on similar letter forms. Delm font family is one of those large and useful families that you really can’t miss if you are looking for typeface combining originality and legibility. Delm is one of these – a sans serif with geometric modern look designed very smart with soft round look and very specific inktraps that complement its uniqueness. Auldroon was inspired by the pseudo-medieval fonts that were fairly popular in the late 19th century. Auldroon comes in two variants. Auldroon-Eld was designed first and is a bit more compact than the regular version. Both are decorative and distinctive and neither was created with a specific use in mind.

Midnight Workers is a Modern Sans-serif typeface inspired by freelancers who work late into the night to make a living for their beloved families. Gustav Jaeger's Becket typeface embodies a retro-medieval aesthetic. Harpsichord (as I have named it) is from the late 1940s and was designed at Lucian Bernhard Studios in New York for Bernhard's Magnetype Collection. It was originally published as 'Community Low' along with 'Community Condensed'. Many of his Magnetype Fonts have been dormant which I hope to revive in the near future.

You will see this in the old type catalogs as Dainty. Late in the nineteenth century, type founders developed a number of fonts with a "pen-drawn" look. They wanted to complete with the work of the hand lettering artists who were coming into their own, thanks to the new art of photoengraving

Mixed Drinks JNL derives its look from a set of gold foil self-adhesive letters made by a company called Cameo for the Schenley distilling company circa the late 1950s or early 1960s. The letters were used to personalize bottles of whiskey for your own bar or to give as a unique gift.

Here is a faithful revival of Gothic Number Ten, released by the Cincinnati Type Foundry in the late 1800s. Not your garden-variety sans-serif, its quirky caps will warm up your headlines. Oakland is a Streamline era design inspired by some hand-drawn lettering on a 1930's French poster advertising a certain brand of Car (Automobile for our American cousins). Michaelangelo. da Vinci. Bellini. Rafael. Masters of Italian art whose names have dwarfed those of many other great Italian artists. Yet relics from these other artists remain, though often unnoticed because of their practical nature. These unknowns are the Italian Masters of vernacular sign painting, and insigne now gives a nod to their work with its new sans serif, Gineso. Based on its inspiration, Gineso was created for posters, headlines and logotypes. (It does well in apps, too, though the sign painters probably weren’t thinking about that at the time.) The tight, narrow forms of its geometric design leave you with a robust flavor that will remind you of mamma’s spaghetti. These condensed forms look great on their own or when their seven different weights and matching italics are utilized together. LaFarge is a typeface primarily inspired by the historic mosaic titling capitals found in the New York City Subway, designed by architect Squire J. Vickers and his staff between 1915-1927. These elegant but industrial signs are characteristic of early-20th century American architectural lettering, and show an evolution of the classical Roman capitals to lower contrast, bolder serifs, and more regular character widths. The majority of this lettering still remains in subway stations today, and though elements of the style vary from sign to sign, many carry the unique features that are reflected in LaFarge: high-waisted crossbars with angled serifs, elegantly curved “R” leg, and distinctive trapezoidal serifs. LaFarge expands this style into a lower case, taking cues from contemporary typefaces like Bookman, Cheltenham, and Della Robbia. A number of typographic features are included, such as small caps, ordinal indicators / superscript letters, arrows, and a set of borders inspired by early subway tile. The result is a fashionable, architecturally-minded typeface that is just as at home on the façade of a grand public building as it is on packaging, magazines, or the web. LaFarge works well in both text and display settings, remaining readable at small sizes but showing off its elegant details in larger uses. LaFarge has received the Communication Arts Typography Award, the ADC Annual Merit Award, is included in the 2020 STA 100, and was part of designer Greg Shutters’ winning portfolio in the 2019 Type Directors Club Ascender Awards. Cruickshank is a decorative typeface from the late Victorian period. The upper case includes several letters with swash strokes, extending well below the baseline, as found in the original design. Alternatives to the swash caps are provided. The lower case contains small caps of simpler design. The face was designed by William W. Jackson and released by MacKellar, Smiths and Jordan Type Foundry of Samson Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1886. MS&J was founded originally as Binny & Ronaldson in 1796 and later known as The Johnson Type Foundry. Cruickshank has a strong late Victorian flavor without the extravagance of so many fonts of the period. In its simplicity and clarity, it may be seen as a precursor to the Art Nouveau style that would develop a decade later.
