FF Cocon’s designer, Evert Bloemsma (1958—2005) described it as a “serious typeface”. Despite first impressions, the description holds up well. Since its 2001 release, FF Cocon has been used in an astoundingly wide variety of design applications. At large sizes, FF Cocon works as a display face, with beautiful detailing. And at small sizes, it remains surprisingly readable. The lowercase letters a, b, d, g, h, m, n, p, q, r and u, were drawn without spurs, as Bloemsma made an attempt to erase every trace of handwriting; even “normal,” neutral sans serif typefaces still retain elements in their letterforms like this. Bloemsma wanted none of it. Although a difficult starting point for a typeface, this proved successful. Bloemsma’s design is a family of rounded yet rather asymmetrical forms with details reminiscent of brush-strokes, but that were not made with a brush in hand. In spite of its claim to seriousness, FF Cocon is a family of seductive, voluptuous styles. The original FF Cocon had two widths—normal and condensed. Later, a more compact Extra Condensed version was introduced, as well as italics.

Callisto is a classic serif stencil fonts that is a stencil font like no others. Elegant curves are paired with great legibility and wide range of available glyphs. While stencil fonts are generally thought of as too masculine and rough, Callisto is very feminine and soft, which makes it perfect as a logo font for those who seek to further emphasise their brand's identity. Despite being a display font, Callisto looks great at smaller sizes, so short headlines and headers will look natural and email legible even in smaller sizes. Callisto comes in two styles —Regular and Half —which can easily be combined within the same body of text. Regular is a more minimal style, with wider and more open apertures, while Half is a hybrid between a serif and stencil font that still has longer strokes and stems. Trasandina is a very unique font-family: a modern, versatile, workhorse typeface with a special personality, given by the mix of humanist and geometric models, remaining far from both extremes. This typeface has 9 styles plus their matching italics, it has an incredible wide range of weights, from very thin to an ultra thick stem. This was made following the Luc(as) de Groot’s Interpolation Theory. Trasandina’s versatility also resides in the +800 characters that each weight includes, having several open type features and language support for more than 200 languages. This font has been specially designed for web (using hinting instructions), making it work in small and large sizes on different types of screen resolutions. Trasandina’s most interesting feature is its flexibility: On one hand, is easy to read thanks to its humanistic letterforms which allow this typeface to be legible in small sizes while remaining neutral (specially around its middle weights). Tomi Haaparanta got the idea for the Tyke typeface family after using Cooper Black for a design project. He liked Cooper's chubby design, but longed for a wider range of weights. “I wanted a typeface that was cuddly and friendly,” recalls Haaparanta, “but also one that was readable at text sizes.” He started tinkering with the idea, and Tyke began to emerge. Even though Haaparanta knew his boldest weight would equal the heft of Cooper Black, he began drawing the Tyke family with the medium. His goal was to refine the characteristics of the design at this moderate weight, and then build on it to create the light and bold extremes. Haaparanta got the spark to design type in 1990, when he attended a workshop held by Phil Baines at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin. “I've been working and playing with type ever since,” Haaparanta recalls. He released his first commercial font in 1996, while working as an Art Director in Helsinki. After about two dozen more releases, he founded his own type studio, Suomi Type Foundry, early in 2004. At five weights plus corresponding italics, Tyke easily fulfills Haaparanta's goal of creating a wide range of distinctive, completely usable designs. The light through bold weights perform well at both large and small sizes, while the Black is an outstanding alternative to Cooper for display copy.

Hildegard is a sans serif text face that works well in both larger and smaller point sizes. On close inspection, one will discover a world of subtle angle variation within the letters' structure that is loosely inspired the stroke movements one uses in calligraphy. These built-up strokes create visible ink traps at many joints, which in smaller sizes play a functional as well as an aesthetic role. The Hildegard typefaces received one of several awards in the 2003 International Type Design Contest, sponsored by Linotype GmbH.

Zona Black Slab is a geometric slab–serif display black typeface. It is the brother font of Zona Black which was inspired by posters from the late 1920’s. Despite being black it has a tall x–height, making it quite legible even at smaller sizes. Its strong features are clean lines, neat square slabs and distinctive glyphs which tend to look even more beautiful at large sizes. Designed by Alex Rütten, Ginkgo is a stylish text typeface. It works well for setting extended passages of text at small sizes thanks to its open counters, generous character widths, and clear and unique letterforms. On top of that, the handling of details such as in the serifs, cross bars, and terminals are wonderful to appreciate when used at large point sizes as well. Gingko received a Certificate of Excellence in Type Design at the Type Directors Club of New York TDC2 competition in 2009.

Franklin Gothic was designed between 1903 and 1912 by Morris Fuller Benton for the American Type Founders Company. The font serves as the American Grotesk prototype. It was named after Benjamin Franklin. Even today, Franklin Gothic remains one of the most widely used sans serif typefaces. The robust character of the font gives text a modern feel. Might Makes Right Pro BB is an all-purpose comic book dialogue font inspired by Bronze Age comics. It’s designed to compliment a wide variety of art styles. The opentype version has autoligatures to swap out adjacent, identical letter pairs for a more organic look, and a wide variety of European characters are included. This Blambot classic comic book dialogue family has been updated with even more European characters, improved spacing and kerning, contextual alternate correction of errant serif-I, and a fourth weight, plain Bold.

Amitié is another typeface design by Ralph M. Unger. With its French origin already hinted at in the name, Amitié comes across as friendly and lively. This design reflects Unger’s interest and love in classical, expressive type with the right sense of style. Amitié is very readable at small sizes, but it can be used as well in headline sizes, e.g. for book title and the like. As usual for URW++ fonts, Amitié is supplied with the full range of Latin glyphs including those for Eastern Europe.

While designing ITC Spirit, Patty King was influenced by classic typeface styles. The letter forms are clearly based on those of the Unziale, which, like ITC Spirit, is also composed of only capital letters. Hints of the Asian brush script style also show in this font. The irregular outer contours are best highlighted in larger point sizes and give the font the look of handwriting. ITC Spirit with its calligraphic style is best used for headlines and short texts in point sizes of 12 and larger.

Mentone is a new general purpose typeface, an attempt at extending the line of the great sans-serifs of the previous century, Frutiger - Stone Sans - Myriad. The font has round corners and subtle chamfers, which are all but invisible at text sizes, but add an upbeat, irreverent expression at display sizes. The typeface is named after the beautiful bayside suburb of Melbourne, Australia, where the designer lives. This new version (2.01) was spaced and kerned by Igino Marini of iKern. The semibold cuts are now free!

At first glance, Jules, appears to be just one more Didonic variation, but a closer look starts revealing all the extraordinary features of this type family, specially designed for use in extremely big sizes. Jules reflect the last of the late 18th century and was inspired by several plates from a portuguese calligrapher named Antonio Jacintho de Araujo. Available in three different optical sizes: Big, Colossal and Epic, Jules has a plethora of ligatures and stylistic alternates, plus refined Italics and a super elegant Swashes version.

Designed to be set in big, large and huge sizes in classic TNT (tight-not-touching) style, Benguiat Caslon is dynamite for a wide range of display demands. We also included outline and drop-shadow versions as well as numerous swash caps, ligatures, contextual alternates and automatically-shifting punctuation. Ed Benguiat originally designed this alphabet for the Photo-Lettering library during his tenure as the legendary type house’s art director. When we purchased Photo-Lettering in 2003, one of the first things we did was start picking some of our favorite films to digitize as fonts. Photo-Lettering partner Christian Schwartz chose this expressive serif specimen for its high contrast strokes that stand up to the most vigorous display typography demands without withering against pesky design limitations like screen resolution, ink spread and dot gain. The letters of NoPain went to a party and had a bit too much to drink. The four NoPain typefaces, regular and bold of NoPainRight and NoPainLeft, were formed by distorting the letters of the wide-serifed font Valgal.

Hair is another beautiful URW++ FontForum contribution by Wojtek Ruhnau. It is a technically ambitious multi-line script-like type design that should be used carefully and in large sizes only. However, set properly, Hair renders beautifully and charmingly.

This typeface was created as a personal project. Inspired by places like Chattanooga and Berkley, I wanted to create a bespoke typeface family for the US Virgin Islands. I noticed that the typeface Berlin Sans was in use all over the islands, in signs, logos, even on the side of police cars. So I built this typeface from the ground up with the goal of updating an old tried-and-true font into a family with versatile potential.

PT Adonis™ was designed by Natalia Vasilyeva and licensed by ParaType in 2002. An original typeface, its characters have slightly oblong proportions, with rounded serifs and generally soft letterforms. The face is both space-saving and quite legible in small sizes. For use in text and display typography.

This typeface is Mergenthaler Linotype’s unlicensed version of Futura, copied weight by weight from Bauer. It was produced in 1939 when Metro failed to gain a significant share of the market, and was later adopted by ATF. The small sizes of Book and Heavy cut for classified are original.
