This is my version of the classic DIN 1451 Mittelschrift, complete with a large multilingual character set. I have made it primarily because I want to have a bit of fun with it by experimenting with giving it some very different expressions - far removed from its serious and no-nonsense roots. Many times, when a new creative process is starting, it is triggered by an everyday action or item. In this case, the looks of a lady’s watch inspired Michael Herold to create his new typeface LUX. The sight of the chronograph sparked associations of the 1950s in Mr. Herold: While this decade was predominantly dominated by brush and feather scripts, there was also a bloom of strict and modern architecture. This special mix of strength and retro style is exactly what Michael Herold is trying to capture in his LUX. The result is a typeface which is perfectly suitable for use on book covers, posters and claims – thanks to its striking impression. The name LUX, Latin for light, is inspired by the high bright-dark contrast within the individual characters. So entspringt auch die Inspiration zur Erschaffung der LUX von Michael Herold dem Anblick einer Damenuhr. Der Chronograph löste bei Herrn Herold Assoziationen zu den 1950er Jahren aus: Während diese Zeit hauptsächlich von Schreibschriften aus Federn und Pinseln beherrscht wurde, nahm auch die streng und modern anmutende Architektur starken Einfluss auf die Epoche. Diese Mischung aus Strenge und 50er Jahre Retro-Stil soll in der LUX zum Ausdruck kommen. Das Ergebnis ist eine Schrift, die sich mit ihrer plakativen Wirkung perfekt für Buchumschläge, Poster und Claims eignet. Namensgebend war der starke hell-dunkel Kontrast innerhalb der Schrift – festgehalten in dem lateinischen Wort für Licht.

I have been to Japan many times, but I have to admit that I have not (yet) been to Odaiba, so this font is a reminder that I should go there one day. Odaiba is a large artificial Island in the bay of Tokyo. It is a popular shopping and sightseeing destination and its sights include a copy of the Statue of Liberty and a mega-sized Gundam Robot. Odaiba Script is a handwritten font. I used a Sharpie pen on paper, so it is nice and thick. It comes with double letter ligatures and all diacritics.

Heartsome is a ‘forgotten’ word. It was mostly used in Scotland and it means: ‘giving cheer, spirit or courage’. I had never heard of it, but I thought it deserved a second chance, so I named this font Heartsome! Heartsome is a handmade Didone; I used a brand new bottle of Chinese ink and a brand new synthetic pencil to paint the glyphs. Brand new, because all of my drawing materials seem to have evaporated when we moved into our new house… A synthetic brush, because I don’t want animals to suffer because I feel the need to create fonts.

It could be you’ve never heard of Bergie Seltzer - and neither had I. Basically, Bergie Seltzer is the fizzing sound an iceberg makes when it melts. We are having a bit of a heat wave right now, so I needed to give this font a ‘cool’ name! Bergie Seltzer font is a cool, all caps display font. It has a slightly eroded look (like a melting iceberg if you will) and a laid back attitude. Use it for your summer magazines, your ultra-cool websites and your bottles of fizzy drink! Just don’t melt the polar cap!

When I started working on this font, I had the radio on. Ed Sheeran was singing his song ‘Castle On The Hill’ and when I looked at this new font of mine, I couldn’t help but notice it had a bit of a medieval look. So I named it Castle On The Hill. COTH is a very lively, messy handpainted serif. It was made with a Japanese brush pen. I actually had a different look in mind, but this is what came out of the pen and I quite liked its looks. It is especially useful for children’s book covers, apps and posters, but be my guest and use it as you like. All it needs is a designers’ touch, a nice tune and a sunset.

ITC Gamma font is the work of designer Jovica Veljović. Named after the third letter of the Greek alphabet, ITC Gamma has almost no sharp corners. Its serifs, stroke endings and terminals are all rounded, a feature best seen in larger point sizes.

One of my all time favourite movies is Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge. In it, there’s a brief scene where the proprietor of the Moulin Rouge (Harold Zidler) signs away the deeds to the establishment. The actual signing of his signature is what motivated me to create this script font. Although it’s not an exact replica of the character’s hand, I like to think that it has the same crisp immediacy of the original. With its consistent oblique slant, narrow and long ascenders and descenders, and the occasional blobbing of letters, the overall effect, gives the appearance of a correspondence penned by lamplight while a storm rages outside.

If you are like me, you love to doodle in a sketchbook when traveling abroad to capture the indescribable moments that a camera or video would miss. Years ago, on a trip to Spain, I penned out this fanciful handwritten script and just fell in love with it. I came across that old sketchbook recently, and the love affair was renewed. Here is my font with carved out letters, like a really bad stamp. Each lowercase letter has 3 different versions, and that makes your text more natural, organic and handmade. Normally I kern my fonts throughout, but this time there is no kerning at all...and that's odd, when we're not talking about monospaced fonts. Anyway, Bottle Fork has its flaws and jumpy x-height...but that's exactly the charm of it all! :)

Techarí comes from a commission in which the brief consisted of the creation of a typeface family to be used for the design of the third disc of the band called Ojos de Brujo based in Barcelona. This disc was called Techarí, which means “free” in Caló, the language of the Spanish gypsies. The starting point of the design was the music of this band, the meaning of the disc 's name, and three words given by the band as key concepts: ethnic, baroque and graffiti. Techarí is a mixture of lots of influences, which give it its unique personality. From its technical viewpoint designing Techarí was a challenge, on the one hand it had to have lots of personality, and on the other it had to work in text at 9 or 10 pt size. Its goal is precisely that, while keeping a strong personality it works in text size. The typeface also contains a Stencil version for use in display sizes which keeps Techarí's innovative spirit. The way it has been “cut" is unconventional, it has been carefully done to keep the freshness of the typeface by taking advantage of the letterforms' flow. Techarí extra complements the typeface by taking a classical typographic form, the ornament, and making it a contemporary graphic tool, vindicating this wonderful typographic element.

The digital font Technotyp is based on the hot metal typeface created by the German typographer and type designer Herbert Thannhaeuser (1898-1963) for the former East German type foundry Typoart in Dresden. In the typography book ‘Der Schriftsetzer’ (Fachbuchverlag, Leipzig, 1952), by Paul Fritzsche, this absolutely beautiful slab serif design is presented in all its variations. Fritzsche remarked that – because of its rather condensed form and its relatively long ascenders – the 'Werkschrift' of the Technotyp (comparable with our 'Regular') seemed to be very well suited to serve as a text face, and recommended for this purpose that the face be cut for the composing machine. However, this never happened and the entire Technotyp family was made available for hand composition only. This is finally changing and being remedied for good now: URW++ proudly presents the new digital version of this really charming font family with its distinct flavor of the 1950s, adding it to the other digital renditions of Herbert Thannhaeuser fonts at URW++, namely Garamond No. 4 and Magna. The original Typoart family had an italic style for the light version only. The new digital version of Technotyp includes italic styles for the regular, medium and bold weights as well, enhancing the family to meet today’s standards and requirements for professional type setting. I have chosen the name of this typeface after the "Sherbrooke" Street in Montreal, Canada, that I daily walked in for several months in the late 2005 while I was studying in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The main characteristics of "Sherbrooke" Typeface are in its sans serif new designed letters and also in its lowercase special numerals. It is simply gratuitous for all. The word "Sherbrooke" is a person's name. Sherbrooke Street - officially Rue Sherbrooke - is a major east-west artery at 31.3 kilometers in length and it is the second longest street on the Island of Montreal in Canada. The street is named for John Coape Sherbrooke, the Governor General of British North America from 1816 to 1818.

Straight from the beauty product ads of the 1960's comes Montez Pro, full of sweeping strokes which lend to a feeling of joy and elegance throughout its letterforms. The Roos family is a digitization and expansion of the last typeface designed by Sjoerd Hendrik De Roos, called De Roos Romein (and Cursief). It was designed and produced during the years of the second World War, and unveiled in the summer of 1947 to celebrate De Roos's 70th birthday. In 1948, the first fonts produced were used for a special edition of the Dutch Constitution on which Juliana took the oath during her inauguration as the Queen of the Netherlands. To this day this typeface is widely regarded as De Roos's best design, with one of the most beautiful italics ever drawn. In contrast with all his previous roman faces, which were based on the Jenson model, De Roos's last type recalls the letter forms of the Renaissance, specifically those of Claude Garamont from around 1530, but with a much refined and elegant treatment, with stems sloping towards the ascending, slightly cupped serifs, a tall and distinguished lowercase, and an economic width that really shines in the spectacular italic, which harmonizes extremely well with its roman partner. The Roos family contains romans, italics and small caps in regular, semibold and display weights, as well as a magnificent set of initial caps. All the fonts contain extended language support, surpassing the usual Western Latin codepages to include characters for Central and Eastern European languages, as well as Baltic, Celtic/Welsh, Esperanto, Maltese, and Turkish.
