Art Gothic was attributed to the Central Type Foundry of St. Louis, Missouri, USA by Henry Lewis Bullen, writing in INLAND PRINTER in 1907, with a reproduction shown in Kelly’s American Wood Type. The typeface appears on the cover of an issue of “The Superior Printer” pictured in Typology by Heller and Fili dated in the 1870s. Art Gothic was designed in 1884 by Gustav Schroeder and proved to be one of the more popular and enduring of the American-designed Victorian display faces of the period, appearing frequently in ads in various publications. The Hamilton Mfg. Co showed a very similar wood type, No. 232, with a modified and rather heavy-handed upper case in 1892. As late as 1897, it may be found in the advertising section of The Ivy of Trinity College of Hartford, Connecticut and was included in the Norwood Press 1902 Specimen Book. I’d been thinking for a while about making a serif font with ball terminals: big fun round ends to the letters anywhere I can squeeze them in. So I made Breakfast Pastry! I started with a hand-drawn set of basic letters, then went hog-wild making alternates and ligatures galore with fun swirls, curls, and even more balls! I’ve cleaned the letters up significantly to make them smooth and easy for any cutting or printing you may want to do, but I’ve also left in some of the hand-drawn character so that the letters are warmer and not too formal. Then I took the first font, and made a second solid version without the cutouts. After that I thought: I tend to make plumper fonts ... why not make an even thinner version? So I did! All three versions have the same character set (over 700 glyphs total), which means they all have the same extras and alternates. All three fonts have over 300 extended Latin characters for language support, as well as over 200 bonus items: alternate letters, letters with swashes, two-letter ligatures, small caps, catchwords, and even some bonus ornaments and elements to make the fonts even more flexible. (After all, if one swash on a letter is good, two or three might be great!)

The font series Andron MC introduces a new feature to the repertoire of the Andron family: middlecase glyphs (intermediate between upper- and lowercase) – and uncial letters. Middlecase glyphs reach a medium height compared to full caps height and lowercase x-height. However, ‘uncial’ means the historic transitional lettershapes of the medieval ages which have gained no status in the bicameral typographic system of modern times. In all three of the Andron MC fonts middlecase (“MC”) glyphs dwell on the lowercase positions. These are coined in uncial fashion in the MC Uncial and MC Medieval fonts but appear as capital glyphs in MC Capital. The same variation occurs with the uppercase positions: whereas standard Roman/capital glyphs are there in MC Uncial and MC Capital, MC Medieval features uncial majuscules here instead.
