Carinthia is derived from the style of Roman calligraphy known as Rustica, but with some features of Roman uncial added to form a complete upper and lower case character set, including variant upper case characters with decorative spurs. The result is a rather vertical, but quite stylish font which has an antique calligraphic look and good readability.

Developed from the simplest possible curves, Amy is a wide hand lettered style with tall straight ascenders and generously looped descenders. The capitals are centred horizontally with the lower case. A handful of ligatures helps copy to flow for easy reading and optional proportionally spaced numerals make the font suitable for quite lengthy chunks of copy.

At first glance, this unusual display face might appear to be a product of the 1960s, with its highly unconventional letterforms and its plastic, fantastic highlight treatment. However, this font is in fact inspired by a ca. 1930 poster for a Belgian beer of the same name. The uncredited Flemish designer was clearly a head of his time (ouch!).

Soft Lime is my simple, yet powerful typeface. ITC Freddo is the work of New York designer James Montalbano and was inspired by a sign lettering manual from the 1930s. Montalbano liked the character shapes illustrated in this manual but found many of the proportions odd. So he reinterpreted them to produce capitals and lower case letters which, according to today's standards, better complement one another.

Night Life JNL follows the classic lettering forms of the Art Deco era of the 1930s and 1940s. On the upper case letters, the A,B,E,F,H,K,P and R have extended horizontals, while the lower case a,b,e,f,h,k,p and r have those extensions removed and are more traditional in design.

Imagine that you had a bunch of pencils of various sizes and you wanted to make a set of letters with them. You would probably come up with something similar to one of these three typefaces. Four letters for this font came from a puzzle in a 1983 Games magazine. After seeing them, I could not resist the temptation to do a complete set of letters made from push pins or tacks, a truly tacky font. Most of the letters on the lower case keys are alternatives--choose the one works best for your purposes.
