Castellar is a capital letter typeface from John Peters, named after a location in the Alps. It first appeared in 1957 with Monotype. Peters modelled the design on the Roman script Scriptura Quadrata as it was used in the first two centuries of the Roman Empire. One distinguishing characteristic is the quadratic proportions of many letters, which are however mixed with circular and narrow forms. The original script was called Scriptura Quadrata because the ancient engravers used rectangular stone plates for their work. Castellar is a typical title typeface and is best used in large and very large point sizes to highlight its classic elegance.

Americana was designed by typeface artist Richard Isbell in 1965. The generous forms of this typeface contain large inner spaces. Lines of text look light and airy and require generous line spacing. The high cross strokes and the open inner spaces make this font highly legible even in small and very small point sizes. The triangular serifs are a distinguishing characteristic of Americana. These first appeared in the 19th century in France and inspired by the developments in lithography, which allowed for freer forms. The forms were typical for advertisement and display typefaces. The sophisticated Americana is particularly suitable for advertisements and personal correspondence.

ITC Tempus is the work of British designer Phill Grimshaw. He claims that every calligrapher's aspiration is to draw perfect roman capitals with a pen, but admits that this is extremely difficult. For this typeface, Grimshaw used a fountain pen on cheap, porous paper and, of course, the ink bled. The resulting forms are classic but their rugged edges deviate from the perfection of roman type. And Tempus Sans is just Tempus with the serif surgically removed, yet the proportions of the characters work nicely," says Grimshaw. Because of its rough quality, the typeface works best in larger point sizes, yet maintains its characters even in smaller sizes.

Kessel 205 is inspired by the classic, geometric sans-serifs such as Futura, but has shallower ascenders and descenders for a more compact look, and features an art deco influence with sharp points at the apex of many characters, lowered crossbars and an oblique crossbar on the lower case e. It's a versatile, modern sans, highly legible as a text font and with a distinctive, elegant look as a display font at larger sizes. It includes old style non-aligning (lower case) numbers, both proportional and tabular as well as accented characters for Central European languages. The Kessel 205 family comprises of six weights and is closely related to Kessel 105.

This highly stylish, engraved blackletter font was cut by Rudolf Koch between 1919 and 1921 for Klingspor in Offenbach on Main. It was then sold under the name Deutsche Zierschrift. I completely redraw and extended this font and called it Zierfraktur. To take full advantage of this fine headline blackletter font, please use it from, at least, 18 points upward. This font contains a bunch of useful ligatures, and it is recommended to activate both Standard and Discretionary Ligatures. The round s can be reached by typing the # key, and you get the numero sign by typing the combination N-o-period and activating the OT feature Ordinals.

I traveled a lot: in the beginning on my own, later as a tour guide. I always used the English word ‘abroad’ to describe a trip to a foreign country, but I noticed that the English, Australians and New Zealanders preferred the word ‘overseas’. I then realised that they all lived on an island, so most of the foreign countries for them were across the sea. I had to think of that when I made this font! Overseas is a brush font with a certain rough elegance to it. I made it using poster paint and a brush. Use if for posters, product packaging and book covers.

Ames’ text is designed for use in its own right and also as a complement to our Ames’ Roman family. Ames’ text is a ‘New-Style’ Didone family offered in three weights and three widths. Binner was designed by John F. Cumming in 1898 and is an alphabet with a strongly historic character. It takes the reader back to the early part of the 20th century, when typefaces of this kind could be found in advertisements on houses and posters. The robust figures display a marked stroke contrast. Particularly striking are the high middle strokes of the E and F as well as the wavy connecting stroke of the H. The curves of the R and P extend well into the lower third of the characters. With its robust figures, Binner is best used for headlines in middle and larger point sizes.

Mesa is a revival of an old pointed Tuscan font from the MacKellar Smiths and Jordan type foundry called Broad Gauge circa 1874. This new version offers a few alternates including half slab and full slab uppercase A's. Opentype case sensitive forms are also included in the Mesa font family. We started production on this font in 2009 but set it aside to work on other projects, we're pleased to have finally finished it. Flamme was designed by Alan Meeks and appeared with ITC in 1993. It is a strong brush script with each stroke doubled and has a nostalgic, retro style. The 1930s and 40s saw an increase in the production of modern script typefaces in foundries all over the world. Expanding markets and their advertisements demanded more and more new typefaces, which then also appeared in newspapers and magazines. A distinguishing characteristic of these typefaces is their informal hastiness and calligraphic roots, a combination which was to embody progress and modernity. Flamme is best used for headlines and short texts in point sizes of 14 and larger.

Macha shares the same DNA as its sibling Anago, but is a completely different species than the former or any of my other sans serifs (Aaux Next, Air, Akagi Pro or Wasabi). It's no-nonsense construction bears many influences from Gill Sans and Frutiger while stubbornly blending my own humanist touch. The focus on developing Macha was just to get to the point with each letterform and discard the rest. Macha takes a little but gives a lot. A fully-loaded character set includes: Small Caps, Proportional Lining and Oldstyle Numerals, Tabular Lining and Oldstyle Numerals, Fractions, Ordinals, Inferiors, Superiors, Stylistic Alternates, Ligatures, Case-sensitive, and more.

Linotype Minos is part of the Take Type Library, chosen from contestants of Linotype’s International Digital Type Design Contests of 1994 and 1997. This fun font was designed by Swiss artist Christian Goetz, who named it after King Minos of Crete of the Bronze Age. Typical of scripts of this time were the ornamental borders around the characters, found on palaces of Knossos, Phaistos and Mallia. These borders surround every character of Linotype Minos, making it exclusively for headlines in larger point sizes. Single characters can also be used as initials mixed with other alphabets, especially with constructed sans serif and modern serif fonts.

Work for the Xcetera typeface started with the desire to create a classical serif design but using the less contrasted stroke thickness found in a host of sans serif designs. My aim was to retain some of the clarity found in modern strokes yet use the serifs to aid in letter recognition and legibility. The result is a form of hybrid design that is surprising clear in small point sizes yet offer a lot of personality in larger formats. Suited for both display and text settings, Xcetera aims to be both functional and fun while looking to explore new possibilities for the classical typeface style.

Linotype Sinah is part of the Take Type Library, selected from the contestants of Linotype’s International Type Design Contests of 1994 and 1997. Designed by the German artist Peter Huschka, Linotype Sinah is a rounded, ornamental font with many strokes ending in teardrop forms. The letters of this wide-running font do not share a common base line. The capital S and the lower case l both drop under it although neither have descenders. Overall, Linotype Sinah has an almost Asian or Indian feel. The font must be used with generous line spacing and is intended exclusively for headlines or shorter texts in point sizes of 12 or larger.

The original plan for Atlantic was to design a typeface in the Venetian syle of the Renaissance, with handwriting character and large ascenders. There is a wave-rolling unevenness in both the x- and cap-height caused by the strong ductus pointing to the upper right, together with heavily curved serifs, resulting in a very lively image of text on a page. Atlantic ? its name reflects the ocean, ships, carriers and loads, tourism and so on. These are the themes Atlantic is best suited for. The extended family includes a serif, a sans, and a special variant ? a SeaWashed. Atlantic was designed for the URW++ SelecType collection.

Big Sur is a six-width slab serif font family with a unique look. At first glance, it is clearly in the tradition of old west style alphabets, with its chunky top and bottom strokes and serifs. But it also features a whimsical vibe in the curvy and pointed flourishes, the wavy baseline, and the swash terminals on many of the glyphs. It's a true standout with unique identifiers, and is bound to grab the eye as something new and different; yet it's traditional enough to establish a solid Western or vintage Americana style. History, as it's said, tends to repeat itself. The round-point pen lettering used in the 1920s logo and ads for Dodge Brothers cars (pre-General Motors) is an early predecessor to the techno type styles of the 1980s. Square in shape, with unique stylization to some letters, Jalopy JNL can cross the decades and be used for a 1920s period piece and still look fresh in an ad for computer parts. Rather than round out the inside lines of the characters to fully emulate the strokes of a lettering pen, the inside lines have straight intersections for the contemporary side of this font's design.

Laca is a semi-sans serif inspired by retro Portuguese packaging of soaps. Laca is the Portuguese word for hairspray. The starting point was to design a typeface that would bring a familiar feeling of closeness and warmth but giving it a modern look ensuring it works well on modern platforms. It’s a lively typeface that brings texture and personality to the text. Perfect for branding and for all communications. Matryo is a narrow, sans serif typeface family of fourteen typefaces, ranging from Thin to Black with accompanying Italics. Kansas Casual offers a more upright, gothic, and modern alternative to the conventional sign painter's one stroke. Kansas provides a completely unique take on a overdone classic with proportions and crossbar heights inspired by the more friendly Chicago style. This all-caps set provides six weights so that you can adjust size with weight to maintain that authentic single brush weighted look. The proofing process included projecting, tracing, and then painting the letters out to see how true the small details were to the medium. Android is an experimental 3D shadow outline font developed by the American type designer Alex Kaczun. The unique lighting created by the beveled edge in combination with an outline font was particularly difficult to create. But the result was worth the effort. Android makes for a powerful headline display that virtually pops off the page. There is a true three dimensional quality to this innovative new typeface. Use the regular Android when setting tight leading for smaller point sizes, and use Android Tall which has taller capitals for larger headlines. By experimenting with Type Effects in Illustrator or PhotoShop you can achieve some spectacular additional 3D effects.

Monolina is a contemporary monolinear script that is based on the contrast between classical (beautiful) calligraphy and quickly jotted manuscript (sketches). As all styles are based on the single stroke of a round nib pen, the letter is rounded. The typeface features two sets of capital and curly uppercase letters, swash characters and alternative lowercase letters, which combine well in three styles. The font also features swash figures and decimal figures for writing years and summer sales. Accent marks for all languages using Latin letters, currency symbols and punctuation marks are included. The typeface comes across as fresh as is particularly effective at headline point sizes.

Our Smokum Pro is a western inspired slab-serif font with a little playful swagger to it. Streeters is a hand brush typeface, created for a specific project, where one of the assumptions in creating it was to combine the appearance of a manual brush, liquid paint but also a spatial effect. Uppercase and lowercase letters create a slightly different effect with the same character height. They are created in such a way that, in addition to writing with one letter case, it is also possible to mix and create many different combinations of uppercase and lowercase characters, for example, a unique look for the same repetitive words. The font is best for works where a non-standard, strong and distinctive form of communication is needed.

Someone recently pointed out that May and June are the wedding season months, and that while we have some excellent fonts for non-traditional weddings (celtic and renaissance styles work well), we don't have a straightforward, elegant engraver style font. That's the kind of shortcoming we can remedy, hence our Belphebe font, which is in the tradition of popular wedding invitation fonts like Rook, but has some antique characteristics which are in the Scriptorium tradition. The kerning on this font was a real challenge, because we wanted all the characters to fit together for a flowing, hand-lettered look, but the results are worth it.

Arthur Baker's display script Sassafras, designed in 1995, is based on the natural inline effect created when writing with a split-metal nibbed pen. Black and white are nicely balanced, giving this calligraphic face a remarkably smooth appearance. The regular and italic versions of Sassafras include two alternate faces: one with long, tall ascenders and regular-length descenders, and one with shortened ascenders and descenders that allow it to fit where its companion might not. In both, the ascenders increase in width as they move upward, while the descenders taper to a fine point. This variety of form makes Sassafras a very flexible choice for display work.
