LIETZ Lindham is based on letters taken from an old type specimen folder from 1936 featuring handdrawn sans-serif ABC's. It's kinda bauhausy and straight but also shows the wonderful lively unevenness of hand-drawn letters. The character of Sopran is expressed by long serifs that replace traditional drops. Contrast is distributed from monolinear in hairline and all the way to the extreme in the black style. Symbols and punctuation are drawn with monolinear strokes to give the typeface more playful typesetting. The long serifs allow for some interesting discretionary ligatures, like “fa” or “Ta”. With two stylistic sets the typeface enables different typesetting opportunities. Its characteristics should be expressed in headlines, larger texts, show posters, displays, signage etc.

Hyperon is a text typeface, which is especially useful for math and physics literature. Its nature is defined by austere and humanist features that show the most in italic. The typeface includes weights from Regular to Black and widths from Condensed to Semi Expanded. What stands out for Hyperon is the extended character set, with added Greek and lots of mathematical signs. Some styles have small caps. The typeface was designed by Natalia Vasilyeva and released by Paratype in 2020.

The German designer Emil Rudolf Weiss originally created Weiss Rundgotisch for the Bauer typefoundry in 1937. In their catalog for the typeface, Bauer began with this quote from Leonhard Wagner: The round gothic (rundgotisch) script is the most beautiful kind of script; she is called the mother and the queen of all the rest." While designing Weiss Rundgotisch, Weiss was inspired by Renaissance types cut by the Augsberg printer Erhard Ratdolt. Ratdolt had spent some time in Venice, which is most likely where he became familiar with round gothic letters. This sort of letterform was never as popular in Germany as Fraktur or Gotisch may have been, but round gothic types were used there for centuries to represent arts and craft feelings, as well as old-fashioned handwork. For a blackletter typeface, Weiss Rundgotisch is very similar to normal serif and sans serif designs, especially its uppercase letters, which seem to have some uncial influence in them as well. Therefore, Weiss Rundgotisch is more legible for contemporary readers, making this an excellent choice for anyone looking to set text, logos, or headlines with in blackletter. Weiss Rundgotisch was apparently quite a difficult typeface to design, even for a master designer like Weiss. He began work on the face in 1915; Weiss Rundgotisch's development took over 20 years to complete."

Filigree, reminiscent of the delicate lace and jewelry produced in Europe in the 16th to 18th centuries, was inspired by the font Always, and by the way in which the threads (or filia) of the characters in Always intertwined. It has a soft, wafty character. It is best used as a display font at a relatively large size. At too small a size the delicacy of the individual filaments will be lost. Best results also from a combination of upper and lower case characters. Using upper case characters alone will not look as good. Alternate characters and ligatures are also included. If your application program supports "kerning" then I suggest that you turn it on. Although not essential, this will enhance the spacing of the letters. The font contains over 272 characters - (upper and lower case characters, punctuation, numerals, symbols and accented characters are present). It also includes a number of "open-type" characters - these enhance the flexibility of the font by providing alternatives that are used either at the discretion of the designer or are determined by the circumstances in which the font is used. It has all the accented characters used in the major European languages.

IronType (formerly known as Ironman) is an extra bold geometric titling face in the Art Deco poster tradition. A warm sense of strength and playfulness runs throughout this design. Triangular-shaped crossbars are some of its distinguishing characteristics. The face also contains some very amusing alternates. The tails of the alternate cap K and R extend below the line and the alternate cap N has a hump instead of a diagonal stroke. A handy set of lowercase letters with lining and smaller figures are also included. IronType Extra Bold is now available in the OpenType Std format. Some new characters have been added to this OpenType version. These advanced features work in current versions of Adobe Creative Suite InDesign, Creative Suite Illustrator, and Quark XPress. Check for OpenType advanced feature support in other applications as it gradually becomes available with upgrades.

Robert Hunter Middleton drew the original design of Stellar for the Ludlow Typograph Company in Chicago. Work began in the late 1920s, when Middleton was asked to create a sans serif type family to compete with European imports of Futura and Kabel. Stellar was Middleton's attempt to raise the ante. Where Futura and Kabel were geometric in design and monotone in weight, Stellar was based on roman character proportions and stroke weighs were stressed. In the late 1990s, Dave Farey took on the task of reviving the Stellar design. While Ludlow cut Stellar in a full range of point sizes, the family was limited to just a roman and bold design. Farey's revival is twice as large a family. It ranges from a very light called Stellar Nova to a very bold called Zeta In between are Lyra and Epsilon.

Designed by expert ad artist Herbert Thannhaeuser for East German foundry Typoart in 1955, Lotto was until now one of the long lost gems of European sign and brush lettering faces. Unlike in Kurier (Thannhaeuser’s other brush face digitized by Canada Type as Puma), the forms’ brush construct uses a series of strokes that are mostly sudden, whimsical, and at times even look like great genius being born out of simple afterthought or straight-forward idiosyncracy. For instance, check out the simple brush pause that is the top of the f, the confident yet welcoming serifs on the T, the similarly-themed C/E and O/Q relationship, and much more. Lotto comes with over 400 glyphs, contains a few alternates and ligatures sprinkled throughout the character set, and includes support for the majority of Latin languages.

Barkanon is not your ordinary humanist sans serif typeface. Blending modern styling with classic humanist flow creates a bold and captivating look. NarrowPath is a family of 18 condensed and ultra-condensed sans-serif typefaces. The family was derived from the font family NarrowWay by adding true lower-case letters. Some alternative letters forms can be reached with the OpenType feature of stylistic sets. The character spacing in most of the styles is quite loose and it can be tightened with an application's character spacing if needed. These typefaces are display faces that can be useful for squeezing tall lettering into tight spaces. Uses may include packaging, signage, and titles.

PT Octava™ was designed at ParaType in 2001 by Vladimir Yefimov. The first (Cyrillic only) version named Scriptura Russica (1996) consisting of three styles (book, italic, bold) was commissioned by the Russian Bible Society. Lately the Latin letters and bold italic were added. Inspired by Lectura, 1969, by Dick Dooijes and Stone Print, 1991, by Sumner Stone. In spite of large x-height the typeface is both space saving and quite legible at small sizes. Expert fonts including small caps (book) and old style figures are available.

Nat Grotesk family consists of 14 styles including 6 narrow ones. It has a half-closed sans serif design with simple and clear lettershapes. Due to compact proportions the face is very space saving, but nevertheless it is rather legible even in small sizes. The bold weights demonstrate increased contrast. Niveau Serif - the companion of Niveau Grotesk - is a type family of six weights plus matching italics & small caps. It was designed by Hannes von Döhren in 2013. Influenced by classical nineteenth century engravers faces, the fonts are based on geometric forms. Niveau Serif has a contemporary feel and combines the clearness of a Sans with the elegance of a typeface with serifs. Linotype Clascon is part of the Take Type Library, which features winners of Linotype’s International Digital Type Design Contest. Designed by the British artist Rachel Godfrey, the constructed forms of the capitals are reminiscent of sketches of many famous 16th century artists, Albrecht Dürer and Nicolas Jaugeon among them. This style emphasizes the mathematic construction of the letters, based on the circle, rectangle and triangle, but Clascon’s historical roots lie in Transitional and Modern Face styles. This font is particularly suited to very short texts, headlines and initials.

Zania is a display typeface. Its characteristic element is cutting in the stem that makes this font very memorable and easy to recognize. Jan Tomáš studied at the Universität der Künste, Berlin. He is a multi-talent – the author of many ideas, a font creator, designer, modeller, technician and web designer. In 2011, he founded Future Typo, the first web portal for advanced typography with original design typefaces and 3D typefaces. When you look closely to Linotype Alphabat, the figures start to change from letters into flying bats and scary faces. Linotype Alphabat can be used for very short texts however it is particularly effective for headlines in larger point sizes so that its details are emphasized.

By the late 1920s, lettering and design had already begun to feel the influences of what would become the Art Deco Movement. The sheet music for the 1927 song "Without You Sweetheart" had its title hand lettered in a block style letter with rounded corners – with the exception of the 'S' and 'R' in "Sweetheart"; reflecting design elements of both styles. For consistency, those letters were changed to fit the rest of the design, and the result is the digital font College Nouveau JNL, available in both regular and oblique versions.

Hyggemand is not a real word: it is a combination of Hygge (meaning ‘fun’ or ‘coziness’ in Danish) and Mand (which means man in Danish). Combined it means something like ‘Nice Man’. I just like the sound and look of this name, so if I offend Danish languages purists, then I apologise for this monstrosity! ;-) Hyggemand is a happy kids font that comes with extensive language support and a set of alternates for the lower case glyphs. If you want the cute Huggeman face, you will find it as a stylistic alternate for the asterisk.

Ingone is a slightly irregular sans-serif face. It was designed to complement PattyDay and HeyPumpkin, but can be used alone if you need an informal, friendly sans-serif font. It has only one weight, but the family includes a shadowed style. In 2018 the inside of the shadowed version was separated out and made a separate typeface. The letters have the shapes of the regular version but the spacing of the shadowed version and can be layered with the shadowed version to easily produce lettering with two colors.

I was commissioned by the Emporium (now Macys) to digitize Radiant Bold Extra Condensed (originally designed by Robert Middleton in 1940) for use in their Sunday supplement to the San Francisco Examiner. For several years, I stubbornly refused to add the lowercase letters to the font, because I thought it looked best just used with caps, but finally relented, added the lowercase letters and at the same time created two more weights as well: Light and Medium. Used very large and carefully, these faces can be quite elegant.

Designed for the newspaper technology of the 1980s, Clarion uses many of the findings made in the preparation of Monotype Nimrod, from which it is derived. The Clarion font family differs from Nimrod in its detailing, which is more akin to that of the Ionics, a style which influenced most designers of contemporary newspaper faces. The large x-height and sturdy construction of the characters make Clarion well suited for use on laser printers as well as being an excellent choice for setting newspapers, journals, newsletters and circulars.

Bromwich is a piece of brand new Edwardian fun. In the spirit of railway travel posters and illustrated news journals, it's a wonderful font for poster design, or for book covers and other work with a period theme. Loosely based on Bembo and Plantin, the Perrywood font family retains some old style characteristics which give the face a familiar feel, however much attention has been paid to optimizing the design to give good quality output at small point sizes and from low resolution output devices. The consistency of character shapes allows close letter spacing to give compact word shapes, excellent word recognition and an overall economy in text. Perrywood offers good legibility and, coupled with an even text color will be very useful for text setting, in correspondence, for faxes and reports.

This serif typeface is a real workhorse. It is a modern tool for text design: extremely legible and well shaped. Bandera Text has six weights with original italics. It catches attention in headlines of posters and magazines or makes reading comfortable in plain texts. Don't forget to try Medium and Medium Italic faces for free. Bandera Text works well with Bandera (slab serif), Osnova (sans serif) and Bandera Display (contrast serif) fonts. Bandera is Spanish for ‘flag’. And Bandera is a symbol of Ukrainian fighting for freedom for many years.

In Lewis F. Day’s 1910 classic, Alphabets Old and New, the author presented the inspiration for this typeface as an example of German monumental lettering, most likely to suggest not that the typeface was really big, but that it had been found on German monuments. Bold yet charming, the face takes its name from a picturesque village in the Bavarian Alps which was the ancestral home of the Gröbl line of Curtii forebears. Both versions of this font include the complete Latin 1252 and CE 1250 character sets, with localization for Romanian and Moldovan.

Innocent until proven otherwise, Olivita is a heavyweight interpretation of the Typewriter genre. Typewriter fonts have captivated generations of designers and found its way into infinite applications, including Milton Glaser’s classic I heart NY logo. Olivita is a fat-face take on the same idea. There’s a lot to negotiate in making type as bold as possible, with shapes having to contort and distort in order to make a cohesive whole. The x-height is tall yet ascenders and descenders are long. Super size it and see the rich, creamy texture come forward.

Every day we are faced with designing on small screens and new formats; This is where condensed fonts have great potential, as they make the most of tight spaces in big headlines. Manchester Condensed is a typeface family designed by Vástago to be applied in large headlines in different formats, such as web, editorial or packaging. Just to mention a few. Different Manchester weights enhance performance at large type sizes, providing hierarchy and imposing style with its elongated shapes. Its use in capital letters is remarkable and fits perfectly into very precise diagramming spaces.

The design of this display face is based on the hot metal typeface Acropolis, issued by the German type foundry Ludwig Wagner in Leipzig in 1940. To further increase its usefulness a Cyrillic was added to it: URW Akropolis, redrawn and digitally remastered by Coen Hofmann for the URW Font Forum, is a true display design that should not be set below 48 point if you want to preserve it's fine details like the open triangular sections, e.g. in L, G, S, T etc. and gain the full typographic splendidness of this beautiful typeface.
