After a lot of time sitting at my desk, creating fonts and trying to figure out how my new software works, I really like to work out a bit. The only thing that I do not like is the music they play at the gym; it is usually a selection of poppy tunes that appeals to a large audience. But not to me. I prefer my death metal - and eighties music, as it brings back a lot of good memories. So, I bought myself some ear buds and installed a music streaming app on my phone. Yes, I know, I am probably the last person on earth who discovered streaming... One day, during a workout session, I listened to a list of eighties music and one song that I had forgotten about started playing: Rappers Delight by The Sugarhill Gang. When I started working on the font, I had to think about the song and named it Square Beat. Square Beat font, other than the name implies, is a rounded, handmade font, ideally suited for books and magazines aimed at a young audience, toy packaging or posters. It comes with great language support, including Vietnamese.

Biwa is a new straight-sided family of formally nuanced grotesk typefaces. Biwa’s lighter weights feel subdued, cool in tone, and neutral, while the heavier weights are more robust and full of personality. In 1972, VGC released two typefaces by designer friends Dick Jensen and Harry Villhardt. Jensen’s was called Serpentine, and Villhardt’s was called Venture. Even though both faces had the same elements and a somewhat similar construct, one of them became very popular and chased the other away from the spotlight. Serpentine went on to become the James Bond font, the Pepsi and every other soda pop font, the everything font, all the way through the glories of digital lala-land where it was hacked, imitated and overused by hundreds of designers. But the only advantage it really had over Venture was being a 4-style family, including the bold italic that made it all the rage, as opposed to Venture’s lone upright style. One must wonder how differently things would have played if a Venture Italic was around back then. Chopper is Canada Type’s revival of Venture, that underdog of 1972. This time around it comes with a roman, an italic, and corresponding biform styles to make it a much more attractive and refreshing alternative to Serpentine. Chopper comes in all popular formats, boasts extended language support, and contains a ton of alternate characters sprinkled throughout the character map.

Nazanin, originally named Haghighi, is a modern Arabic text face first produced by Linotype in 1978. Its popular design was converted into OpenType format in 2005, taking full advantage of digital technology to allow accurate positioning of diacriticals and kerning refinements. The counters and inter-character proportions of Nazanin are characteristic of Persian display lettering and typography. This is particularly true of Nazanin bold, which gives a strong image when used for display purposes. The lightest weight of Presley Slab takes inspiration from a late nineteenth-century type specimen, but what began as a decorative and delicate contrasted serif stirred Alejandro Paul’s imagination to conjure voluptuous reverse contrasted letterforms. These became the heaviest weight of Presley Slab, which nods to the lacquered hairstyles from the birth of rock ’n roll with its idiosyncratic ball terminals. Its playful allure and swagger remains visible in the weights that stand between these two extremes but as the curls loosened, many things happened in the design process including the appearance of swashes and alternates. Presley Slab’s personality has breadth; it is a fun, confident and contemporary palette of letters that will perfectly perform for any job, from editorial design to branding. The Extra Bold and Black weights are a powerful option at large sizes for use on posters and billboards; the graceful Thin and Extra Light weights are delicate options for packaging design or fashion branding. Milk Drops is a semi-casual-feeling cross between a didone and slab serif display font. Elegant, flourishy, whimsical and bold, as much as one font can be any or all of those things! It has highly contrasting weights, but not so much to take itself too seriously or risk legibility. Playfully, it entertains the teardrop motif wherever it can – in expected areas like the descender of a "y" and the ascender of an "f", but also in some whimsical flourishes. Many of the uses of the teardrop motif are implemented on the terminals and ears where many old prints may have suffered from bleed of ink – answering a "what if" question like "what if those accidental bleeds were designed on purpose?" or "what if a font were designed as though it was already seen through blurry eyes?" Blanchard is a revival and elaborate extension of Muriel, a 1950 metal face made by Joan Trochut-Blanchard for the Fonderie Typographique Française, that was published simultaneously by the Spanish Gans foundry under the name Juventud. Blanchard is a script that embodies the post-war narrow decorative aesthetic that would become the instantly recognizable feature of that era’s design. Mundane information—the sort you might ignore—often appears in the form of very simple, utilitarian lettering, devoid of personality, the sort of industrial lettering you find on old blueprints, park restrooms, and electrical boxes. MVB Diazo is such a thing. It looks like lettering done earnestly with a plastic template. The monoline caps—constructed from straight lines and simple curves—have rounded details as if rendered by a blunt pen on a topographical survey or by a router on a rustic campground sign. The MVB Diazo fonts are compact, available in two widths: Condensed and Extra Condensed. Each width offers four weights from Light to Black. The fonts are perfect for wherever plain and boring letterforms are required. All widths and weights are also available in two distressed textures (#1 and #2) that accentuate the industrial character of the design. I just returned from a short holiday in Japan. I stayed in hostels and small guesthouses and noticed a peculiar thing they all had in common: they love little notes, telling you where to go, what to do, how to use the microwave oven and when to check out. These notes were sometimes printed, but more often they were handwritten. I found that the Japanese way of writing roman characters is a little, well, unusual. The letters are correct, but they have that typical ‘Japanese look’ - most notably the a and A the b, d and g, the p and P and the t and T. I can’t really tell you what makes them look different, maybe it’s the proportions, but I do know that a Nippon Note is highly recognisable. So, here is Nippon Note, a highly recognisable, handmade font. You don’t really have to be in Japan to use it, but it will give your designs that extra cachet. Karim is a traditional-style Arabic text face, designed in response to a demand for a traditional text face adapted to setting Quranic commentaries. Within the constraints of the standard character set and typesetting program, Karim’s design aims to recall the style and fluency of manuscript Naskh without, however, reproducing the idiosyncrasies of any particular calligrapher. The line weight chosen is heavier than usual for a traditional light face in order to benefit the reproduction of small size Tafsir text. A tall kaf, deep descenders and slightly inclined alifs and lams all help to suggest the cursiveness of manuscript. The type-style that emerges is characterized by restraint and clarity; qualities suited to Karim’s original purpose, and ones that recommend it for wider use. Fungia is the result of an experiment to remelt loose natural forms to a coherent structure of a typeface. The idea appeared as a kind of joke: what letters look like if based on the shape of mushrooms. In a sense the structure of�mushroom has some affinity to the structure of�a letter: a cap and a stalk remind�a serif and a stem respectively. So it was pretty easy to design such straight letters like I, E, L, F. The captivating challenge was to apply the idea on round letters (O, C, D, G), letters with diagonal (N, M, Z) and signs without serifs (digits, @, &). The result exceeded expectations. The typeface turned sophisticated and vibrant but absolutely consistent. It became capital-only font in one weight. Because of its opulent forms Fungia performs best in large size and short inscriptions. However it provides readability in small size as well. Fungia is more likely thing-in-itself. Initially it wasn't intended to solve specific design challenges. But the alleged scope could include book covers, posters and billboards, street signs, magazin spreads and all situations that demand�expressive typography. King Tut is a restoration and expansion of the original Egyptian Expanded, a single bold face cut in 1850 by Miller & Richard, the famous Edinburgh founders. This aesthetic, though originally issued to help drive simple print advertising of those days, is perhaps the longest lasting genre of typeface. This aesthetic flourished in the later part of the 19th century, helped by the surge of similar faces from England (such as Figgins' Antique 6 and Expanded Antique), and became the defining index of the old American wild west that continues to this very day. King Tut serves up its impact through a balance between the wide, compact letterforms and elegant curvature that manages to come through even in confined areas. The family's weight variety allows for more options in counterspace use as well as precision in the amount of curve definition and contrast needed by the typographer. The lighter weights completely oppose that 19th century boldness and expose the alphabet's skeleton in a strive for simplicity that fits modern applications. I designed Conium to be a sister font to Nightshade. It was meant to have the appearance of the hemlock plant without being too derivative; it’s thin drooping stems conjure images of Hamlet’s mad Ophilia clutching sickly weeds while thinking them to be flowers. It also projects the appearance of an ice cold, wrought iron, cemetery gate. The sort that one might pass on a damp overcast day. A fitting compliment to an Edward Gorey illustration from top, right down to the frigid ground from which it sprang. Comalle is an organic typeface that rescues some elements of handwritten script, but its stroke does not necessarily answer to a literal calligraphy structure. So Comalle could produce a powerful impact on the page, it was designed with thicker strokes than its counter forms. The objective is that the black of the letter fills the page and causes a fastest visual impact than typographies that balance blacks and whites. One of the most important tasks of the Comalle design was to think of how to handle the unequal percentages of blacks and whites in the typeface. The peculiar thing, is that the precision work of the letter does not make the blacks, but the whites; this is the reason why in one first instance it was very valid to start off designing in a very gross way, nevertheless, the majority energies are put in the details of the design of counter space. From the drained filling concept of forms Comalle was born, a typeface that pretends to enchant with its delicate counter space design and to impact with the heavy outlines which compose its form.

Hastings was inspired by my appreciation for old fashioned English murder mysteries set in the early part of the twentieth century. No one seems to capture the ambience of the roaring twenties or thirties better than the Brits. Everything from the clothing, to the cars, to the telephones, down to the smallest accessories like the pens, all seem to have been appropriated from the local museum. I'm hopeful that this typeface also embodies similar feelings with its sleek and streamlined Art Deco features.
