Directa Serif Variable is a text type family in one single font file. It explores new possibilities for the original type family released by Outras Fontes some years earlier, which is designed to save space with the highest readability. The variable font is composed of two axes of variation: Weight (100–900) and Italic (0–1). It also contains 18 predefined styles between Thin and Heavy and their respective italics. So now you can adjust the weight of the type by interpolating it in real time using any variable font compatible app. There are hundreds of possibilities between the values of 100 (Thin) and 900 (Heavy). Shard was originally commissioned for Nickelodeon’s 3D reboot of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise. It complemented the show’s new angular logo, which Rian Hughes also designed. There are alternative versions of many letters available in the upper and lower case keys, and a selection of around 90 ligatures that automatically substitute themselves in running text to give a tight, interlocked fit.

Plantain Stencil is based on Plantain which in turn is my interpretation of Plantin Adweight, which was one of my first commissioned projects (by Smarter Image, long before they went bankrupt). Plantin Adweight is one of the most beautiful designs of the Plantin family, which is a modern revival typeface, cut under the direction of F. H. Pierpont in 1913, who based the design on that of a famous 16th century printer, Christophe Plantin, for whom Pierpont’s font was named. Frank H. Atkinson was a popular Art Nouveau sign painter in Chicago, Illinois. He designed signs for the Cadillac Motor Car Co., Chicago Academy of Fine Arts and the department store Marshall Field. Oddly enough, he even designed signs for other sign painters. In 1908 he published a book, Sign Painting, which sold well. French Plug, a bold, rounded, all-cap design in an American Art Nouveau style from that book. It has a relaxed, easy-going informality that is useful for ads and flyers. It also would have fit very nicely with many French posters of the period.

Gramma is a compact sans with big x-height, a robust and balanced typeface that work well both for headlines and main bodies of text. The initial constructions, assembled from a few well-defined geometric modules, were later polished into more organic forms; the letters’ arches are quite squared, and the counters and other internal negative spaces push outward, creating a tension that balances the forms’ compression. Gramma’s most evident characteristic is its “bird-beak” terminals (present in many letters, including the c, e, f, s...) that replicate the unconnected junctures between stem and curve, visible in the a,b,d,g,h.

Romantic, decorative Adios Script is one of Alejandro Paul’s most elaborate and technically refined faces to date. Inspired by designs in “how-to” commercial lettering guides of the 1940s, it has been refined and brought into the 21st century through a huge variety of ornate swash letterforms. The lowercase “h” alone offers 43 variants. Hundreds of ornamental ascenders and descenders allow a beautiful interplay of strokes and combinations, while avoiding overlaps or conflicts. This family was inspired by the set of fonts used in the end of 1800s by the famous J. H. Geiger, printer in Lahr (Germany), especially these used to print an almanac for the year 1883. It is a Fraktur pattern, with two styles, as a few others incomplete fonts also used for this work were Blackletters from other patterns. Both were used in two size, for titles, subtitles, main text and notes. This font contains standard ligatures and German historical ligatures (German double s, long s, tz, ch, ck...) and diacritics. 1543 German Deluxe Initials may be used in complement this family.

XPawnShop is a typographical chess font; the pieces are letters. The Pawn is an awkward letter P, the knight is a horse in the shape of an h, the bishop is a decorative letter B, the rook is an elephant with an R shape, the queen is a Q, and the king is an ornate K. A narrow, modern Slab Serif. JOSEFOV is directly derived from the sans serif text font ”Hedwig“. Therefore, of course, it pairs best with “Hedwig”. The basic thought was to create a font with heavy rounded serifs in the style of ”Clarendon“ but which hardly reminds one of that particular font. The form principle of rounded serifs is applied whenever possible — for example at the points where the individual strokes of the characters join one another. JOSEFOV seems very technical, very constructed (and truly is). In order to soften up the rigid impression, the serifs are applied at some points contrary to the tradition handed down, as with the upper case A C G K M V W and the lower case a b d h i j k l s t. Historically there is no example of the laterally oriented serifs of capital and small s (S) and C G. On the other hand, the double-sided serifs on the stems of b d h k l appear at the beginning of modern times in the very first serif types from five hundred years ago. The double-sided serifs of A M V W were also customary in the first decades of printing. JOSEVOV is particularly suitable for topics such as nature, folklore, culture, music, nutrition.

Skizzors is a family designed by Ethan Dunham created by cutting letters out of paper. The fonts have an irregular edge but are clean and legible. The bold version is almost black and complements the regular version nicely.

Benderville comes with a solid construction, an ample x-height, an angular edge, and an attitude to match. A sort of rangy slab-serif with a voice all its own -- a voice that seems to holler "Hey! A single-weight display font, Steel Grrrder Groove is a constructivist inline stencil design best used in short display settings or as an introductory drop cap to grab attention. A friend once jokingly told me that what I really do is mine extinct arts for parts to use in modern things, like going to the scrapyard to pick up bumpers, quarter-panels and dashboards off of Datsuns and Ponies to build a shiny new Ferrari. I still kind of grin at that, but I certainly do spend a lot of time looking at old things and imagining ways they would work today. This shiny new Ferrari here is called Bibliophile, and it contains scrap heap parts from various pages by Louis Prang, the Prussian-American printer and publisher who inspired my Prangs fonts. This is my second engagement with the late 19th century man, and it’s quite a bit more intricate than just an italic Didone with a connected lowercase. Bibliophile marries Round Hand calligraphy with Italian capitals, two styles not often relayed in the same alphabet, but work together beautifully when combined well. When you combine them well with a few long-practised tricks of the trade, then mix in a few trusted features from my previous work over the years, you get my usual crazy exuberance, like 17 different shapes for the d, 21 different forms for the y, endings, beginnings, swashes, ornaments, and so on. It’s no secret that I can get carried away when I’m so consumed by an idea. — Bibliophile comes in 2 weights, each of them with over 900 glyphs covering all the latin languages. Bibliophile also comes with a bold weight, something I’m always reluctant to do with something as adventurous and complex as the structure of this historical mashup. But I couldn’t chase away the idea of increasing the contrast while maintaining the hairlines in a lowercase this narrow. Part of it was the curiosity about the outcome, and part was the sheer challenge of it. I think it turned out OK. Words set in either weight will show delicateness and elegance, and the more time you spend inside the font and micro-manage the setting, the more ways you will find to magnify either. Bibliophile can be as muted or luxurious as you want it to be. This is the kind of alphabet that fits well in fashion marketing and high-end packaging, from the very subdued to the super-exquisite. Handu, designed by Alex Jacque in 2012, is an affable hand-drawn sans-serif inspired by the hand-painted type and signage on the streets of Kolkata, India. Fitting then that it come to life with brush and paint. When used for display purposes the organic, painted texture of Handu's glyphs really shines. At smaller point-sizes the hand-drawn aesthetic still translates. Handu comes in two styles, regular and shadow. Use each independently or overlay them for a little youthful emphasis.
