Shortly after the creation of Chauncy Deluxxe, Chank realized that he needed a condensed font to go with the regular version of his handwriting. The solution was Coffeedance, a fun, light, dancing, dandy handmade font. Makes me think of frozen treats as the lines wiggle a bit like they’re shivering. Brrrr. Coffeedance was Chank’s Font of the Month for November 1998.

In the pre-computer, pre self-adhesive label era of office supplies a number of companies (including Dennison, Maco and Denny-Reyburn) manufactured a wide variety of gummed labels for just about any use or purpose. Blank labels, specialty labels and decorative holiday seals were just a part of this line. One popular style was that of labels with parallel thick-and-thin borders of red lines and corners chamfered, rounded or straight cut. Occasionally, one could find similar labels with blue, green or gold borders but red was the mainstay, hence naming this typeface Red Border Labels JNL. Presented in this font is a collection of twenty-six standard and specialty shape label borders on the capital (A-Z keys) and twenty-six solid panel versions on the lower case (a-z) keys which can be used as backfills for the borders or as stand-alone labels.

From the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, by way of Toronto, comes Martie's handwriting. Martie Byrd is a school teacher in Roanoke, Virginia, and a friend of Canada Type's Rebecca Alaccari. After years of admiring the cheer and clarity of Martie's handwriting, we asked her to write out full alphabets for some cool font treatment. The intent was to do three different versions of her writing in two different pens, then use the auto-magic of OpenType to determine letter sequences and rotate character sets on the fly when the fonts are in use. A successful endeavor it was. Take a look at the images in the MyFonts gallery to see the character rotation in action, along with a visual explanation of why Martie is not just another handwriting font. Unlike other available felt tip and ballpoint handwriting fonts, the regular and bold variations are style-based, not weight-based. They are the handwritten expressions of two different Sharpie pens: The fine point one (Martie Bold), and the ultrafine one (Martie Regular). The style-based variation considerably helps the realism needed in design pieces that take advantage of the contrast of two different handwriting fonts. Weight thickening in handwriting is an obvious mechanical effect that only happens with computers. Weight changing by replacing pens is what happens in the real world. Martie Pro and Martie Pro Bold each contain three different character sets in a single font. Language support includes Western, Central and Eastern European languages for all three sets. This translates into each Pro font containing over 750 characters. Add OpenType code and stir, and you have true handwriting fonts with versatility unavailable out there in anything else of the genre. A software program that supports OpenType features is needed to use the randomization coded in Martie Pro and Martie Pro Bold. Current versions of QuarkXpress and Adobe applications (Photoshop, Illlustrator, InDesign) do contain support for the randomization feature. But if you don't have one of these apps, you can still use the interchangeable Type 1 or True Type fonts and change the characters manually to achieve the appearance of true handwriting. The Martie fonts come in a variety of price packages, from the affordable single fonts to value-laden complete sets. All the proceeds from these fonts received by Canada Type will be donated 50/50 to two primary schools: One in Roanoke (where Martie teaches), and one in Toronto (where the 10-year old, real Canada Type boss goes). So next time a design project needs a handwriting font, do the write thing and use Martie to keep it real.

Canadian designer Patrick Griffin made P22 Counter as an exercise in exploring the limits of counter-space and interchangeability between extremely geometric and standard calligraphic forms. Within a field of solid stems and horizontal strokes, parallel lines and curves play the role of counterparts to define square and round shapes, making what’s revealed just as interesting as what’s withheld. Each of the three basic Counter fonts stakes its own aesthetic territory, from clean basic minimalism, through the nostalgia of exuberantly pixel-based design, and on to calligraphic-cum-typographic, all within clear and precise geometric parameters. Counter Pro comes with that entire range included in a single font, giving its user the ability to move freely in a visual space and counter-space that can be defined by more than 1450 glyphs. While all the fonts come with extended Latin language support, P22 Counter Pro includes all three fonts in one font, many alternates, swashes and ending forms that are not available in the basic fonts.

First off, Slivowitz is written with a v (SlivoVitz), rather than a w, but I liked it better with a w. Slivowitz is a plum brandy from Eastern Europe. My father used to be an international truck driver and he often had to go to Eastern Europe. He took all kinds of ‘western’ goods with him to give away (plastic bags, beer, cigarettes - remember, Eastern Europe at the time was still communist!). He always came back with bottles of Slivowitz. I never tasted it, as I was too young, but I liked the name and I decided to name this font after a fond memory! Slivowitz is an easy-going handwritten script font - it looks good on fashion items, book covers and fancy magazines, but greeting cards will look just as great. Comes with a bunch of ligatures, alternates and a whole lotta diacritics!

Veltro was originally designed in 1931 for Nebiolo in Torino. The typeface has been redesigned, digitized, completed and expanded as OpenType Pro in the profonts studio. Both styles cover the complete character set for Western and Eastern Europe.

This series of faces was designed initially by Morris Fuller Benton, circa 1900. The design is a refinement of Taylor Gothic from 1897. It features a sans serif thick and thin design with angular stems. Pre-dating art deco, this design feels quaint, yet it still has a touch of modernism. Frederic Goudy designed a bold version of Globe Gothic in 1905 for ATF. The Bold and Bold Italic digital versions have been added to the LTC library in early 2007.

Emulating real handwriting has always been an aim of font designers in the digital age. The standard mainstream scripts and doodles that were available for the longest time have not successfully reached that goal. A letter always looked the same wherever you placed it. Some workarounds, such as letter alternates and ligatures, were used in many fonts, but they were a bit inconvenient to use, and in some cases didn't work correctly because they had to be placed in separate fonts from the main character set. Not until now, with OpenType technology, have we been able to emulate real handwriting, by including multiple character sets in the same font and programming it for smart form changes through letter sequence counting. Secret Scrypt was the first Canada Type font to make it to the bestseller list in the summer of 2004. In early 2005 a New York restaurant chain picked Secret Scrypt to use on its menus and internal signage, but they wanted to look even more like real handwriting, where two or three instances of the same letter used in one word would automatically change and look different from each other. Using OpenType technology, Canada Type produced a Secret Scrypt Pro for that restaurant chain under the direction of Mucca Design in New York City. That initial version contained three different character sets in the same font, and some intelligent programming that determines the sequence of the letters and change their shapes accordingly. Now the retail version of Secret Scrypt Pro is available, with four character sets built into the font for even more variety on the real handwriting theme. I was in a bit of a gloomy mood just before I created this font. I had no inspiration whatsoever (which always affects me in a bad way). I was trying to create a font using broken satay skewers, as using those gives the letters a unique look. I broke about 25 skewers and they all broke ‘the wrong way’. Yes, it’s pathetic, I know, but that’s how it is. I decided to go to the gym and do a little workout, hoping my dark mood would pass. When I came back, I broke one more skewer and lo and behold, it broke exactly the right way! I made this font in one go, using that fantastic skewer and lots of Chinese ink. Darkness Rising comes with all the diacritics you’ll need, plus double letter ligatures and some cool underlined alternates.

This font started life in 1893 at the Boston Type Foundry, but was also cast at the Central Type Foundry. Both were members of the ATF combine formed in 1892. Like so many interesting fonts of its day, it was issued without a lowercase, limiting its use to display headlines. Sometime in the early 1990s, we designed a lowercase to go with it.

This handwritten font is the result of trying to write in a different way to what I'm used to: sometimes taking a left turn when going straight was the more obvious way. Or the other way around. The result was quite readable and it turned out that I could make surprisingly matching monographs with it.
