Xylotype guru Rob Roy Kelly identified this specimen from his personal collection as "Phanitalian". This addition to the Whiz-Bang Woodtype series takes its name from a small Texas town in the middle of nowhere which has risen to international prominence—at least for folks interested in such things—as the site of the World Championship Chili Cook-off. Both versions of this font contain the Unicode 1252 (Latin) and Unicode 1250 (Central European) character sets, with localization for Romanian and Moldovan.

Wasabi is one of the key ingredients in the Japanese kitchen. Also known as japanese horseradish, it is an extremely spicy condiment made out of the graded root of the Wasabi plant. Its spiciness is different than that of a chili pepper though, more like a hot mustard. The spicy taste shoots right through your nose, but does not last for long. Wasabi is traditionally used in sushi and sashimi dishes, soba noodles, and in a number of Japanese snack foods. Equally sharp and stingy, VLNL Wasabi Turbo was designed by Donald Roos. Despite its japanese outward appearance, the font has its origin in lettering found on a German book. It is hot, and edgy like a samurai sword. Wasabi Turbo will stand out as headline and logo!

ITC Kulukundis is the work of designer Daniel Pelavin, a square, connecting script which looks as though it could have been cast in shiny chrome for the side of a 1950s American roadster. Pelavin based his design very loosely on a vertical French script but the overall look is all his own. Unlike calligraphic scripts, the lower case letters all connect in exactly the same way and the straight diagonal junctures give the typeface its broad, spacious character and keep it locked into a continuous line. ITC Kulukundis could also be used to create a decorative border for special occasions.

A friend once jokingly told me that what I really do is mine extinct arts for parts to use in modern things, like going to the scrapyard to pick up bumpers, quarter-panels and dashboards off of Datsuns and Ponies to build a shiny new Ferrari. I still kind of grin at that, but I certainly do spend a lot of time looking at old things and imagining ways they would work today. This shiny new Ferrari here is called Bibliophile, and it contains scrap heap parts from various pages by Louis Prang, the Prussian-American printer and publisher who inspired my Prangs fonts. This is my second engagement with the late 19th century man, and it’s quite a bit more intricate than just an italic Didone with a connected lowercase. Bibliophile marries Round Hand calligraphy with Italian capitals, two styles not often relayed in the same alphabet, but work together beautifully when combined well. When you combine them well with a few long-practised tricks of the trade, then mix in a few trusted features from my previous work over the years, you get my usual crazy exuberance, like 17 different shapes for the d, 21 different forms for the y, endings, beginnings, swashes, ornaments, and so on. It’s no secret that I can get carried away when I’m so consumed by an idea. — Bibliophile comes in 2 weights, each of them with over 900 glyphs covering all the latin languages. Bibliophile also comes with a bold weight, something I’m always reluctant to do with something as adventurous and complex as the structure of this historical mashup. But I couldn’t chase away the idea of increasing the contrast while maintaining the hairlines in a lowercase this narrow. Part of it was the curiosity about the outcome, and part was the sheer challenge of it. I think it turned out OK. Words set in either weight will show delicateness and elegance, and the more time you spend inside the font and micro-manage the setting, the more ways you will find to magnify either. Bibliophile can be as muted or luxurious as you want it to be. This is the kind of alphabet that fits well in fashion marketing and high-end packaging, from the very subdued to the super-exquisite. I bought a new coffee machine - the piston variety. It is shiny, made in Italy and I can make a killer espresso or latte with it. I usually start off the day with a pour over coffee and save my milky coffee for later. I also have two grinders: one for a coarse grind (pour over) and one for a finer grind (espresso and latte). Yes, you will probably say that it’s quite extravagant to have two grinders, but I do like my coffee! Anyways, this is what I thought of when I worked on Coarse Grind. A swarm of butterflies that automagically turns into stunning patterns. This font counts 65 unique glyphs easily accessed through the keyboard (numerals, upper & lowercase plus some punctuation marks), making it possible to design patterns even in simple text editors. Just make sure to set the leading the same as the font size, as some software may override font settings. Well, in fact some glyphs don't require such accuracy and let you play with leading and letterspacing, resulting in sort of chaotic patterns. Sort of... butterfly effect.

A. R. Bosco made Romany for ATF in 1934, when there was much demand for script types in advertising and publishing. It was the high times of Speedball lettering, and a casual script in that fashion was naturally very welcome. It became an instant hit and was used widely for a good part of the 1930s and 1940s. Apricot is not only a revival of Bosco's work, but also a major expansion of it. It contains very effective solutions to the many problems presented by the original metal type, which had to always be tracked too wide because of the forms of some of its letters. Solving these problems was not an easy task. A comprehensive set of alternates was designed to give the user the ability to replace some forms in certain uses, and a large set of two-, three-, and even four-letter ligatures was added to solve the awkwardness of some of the more common letter pairings. The resulting work is quite delightful, especially for those who like to take advantage of OpenType technology. Apricot is the rarest kind of script in digital type these days, the kind that is upright, round, bold, feminine, and distinctly young in appearance. A birthday cake for a teenage girl can certainly benefit from these letters. This typeface is intended for use with single words or phrases at a large point size. Suggesting some sort of calligraphic inspiration, I sketched a couple of these letters while creating a logo concept and decided to make a complete alphabet. The stroke through the letterforms adds some interest and elegance, although I believe this typeface expresses a sort of vehement or serious character. This is my new, and first, typeface. I plan to create more in the future. If you use it for anything interesting, I'd love to see!
