A 1930s hand-lettered poster for the play "The Cradle Will Rock", put on by the WPA (Works Progress Administration) Federal Theater Project is the source material for Talent Show JNL; available in both regular and oblique versions. Originally, the "R" and "L" had fish hook bends, but those two letters were revised to be more traditional in structure. The obvious Art Deco influence, along with what sign painters refer to as "stovepipe lettering" (straight lines with curved [bent] corners) is a simple, clean approach to retro-influenced titling.

The hand lettered cast credits for the 1939 film “Golden Boy” (starring Barbara Stanwyck, Adolphe Menjou, William Holden and Lee J. Cobb) was the model for Golden Moment JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Built in 1928 in Wichita, Kansas, the Uptown Theater started out as a movie house, but today still exists as a dinner theater. Online images of this vintage venue’s perpendicular wall sign show the theater’s name in an Art Nouveau influenced angular style with rounded terminals – similar to that of pen drawn sign lettering of the era. An ad in the Oct. 27, 1919 issue of the trade magazine “The Moving Picture World” promoted “Princess Virtue” from Bluebird Pictures starring Mae Murray – The Adorable [as noted by the movie studio in the ad]. Matthew Carter designed the Shelley family 1972 for Mergenthaler Linotype to be used as a new script face for the photo typesetting machines. The basic idea was to create one script face that would offer dfferent elegant letterforms. Matthew designed Shelley in three different versions, Allegro which is in the style of Kuenstler Schreibschrift, Andante where the caps are less flowrish and wide and Volante where the letters have its most expressive and wide forms and the lowercase z in this font is in the french anglian double stacked form. All three versions can be easily mixed to give the text a more individual calligraphic look Besides Shelley Linotype Zapfino from Hermann Zapf shows similar basics, but in a totally different letterform. In Linotype Zapfino the individual lowercase letters from the four different versions have different letterforms which gives the text an even more individual touch.
