The motivation behind the Botanika family was the desire to create a text version of the Magion font. Although the glyphs were originally drawn using the same proportions, they were subsequently adjusted in order to improve legibility. The font retains certain characteristics of the original, such as the top serif on the “i” and the similar bottom serif on the “l”. Lowering the x-height lent the family a new and original character. The italics are slightly more condensed than the regular weight, without losing the austere grace of the regular weight. They are distinct enough to stand out in the text. Alternative characters can be selected to spice up the setting, or conversely to subdue headlines by using more traditional letter shapes. Small caps are available as well. The monospace version is a 10 pitch font: at 10 pt type size 10 characters fit exactly into the width of one inch, meaning that individual letters Take up 60 % of an em in width. A type of “handwriting” discovered by chance, extremely abstract On April 8, 1948 a certain Walter Plaga wrote a crude poem about a hero on a commemorative plaque. The very poor reproduction of the handwritten original, etched into a metal sheet, produced extremely abstract forms so that — even if unintentional — a script completely void of bowls was created. That which originally was the normal clumsy handwriting of a layman thus transformed into a pseudo-modern deconstructive typeface, which in the 21st century appears contemporary. The capital letters especially reflect the original: in part they show forms labeled incorrectly ”old German“ handwriting, which is actually Latin, in the letters A D G I J K L S V W X Z , whereas C H N O P R appear very modern. Truly a form of handwriting: without joining the letters, especially between the lower case characters, a silhouette effect is formed. Sailor is the digital rendition of a film type that was popular in the early- to late-1970s. The type was called West Futura Casual at Photo-Lettering by David West. Some of the letter shapes of the original were replaced with more contemporary versions, but the originals remain accessible as alternates from different cells within the font, along with some other alternates and letter combinations. Just as the name implied, this sort of lettering is what happens when someone tries to apply Futura’s geometrical principles with a casual hand brush. This style has been popular for over three decades now, and is still going on strong. Posters with casual attempts at geometry are seen everywhere these days. Sailor’s brush style is now the standard visual expression of fun, cool, and happy atmosphere. The Englishman William Caslon punchcut many roman, italic, and non-Latin typefaces from 1720 until his death in 1766. At that time most types were being imported to England from Dutch sources, so Caslon was influenced by the characteristics of Dutch types. He did, however, achieve a level of craft that enabled his recognition as the first great English punchcutter. The original Caslon specimen sheets and punches have long provided a fertile source for the range of types bearing his name. Identifying characteristics of most Caslons include a cap A with a scooped-out apex; a cap C with two full serifs; and in the italic, a swashed lowercase v and w. A few of the many interpretations from the early twentieth century were true to the source, as well as strong enough to last into the digital era. These include two from the American Type Founders company, Caslon 540 and the slightly heavier Caslon #3. Both fonts are relatively wide, and come complete with small caps, old style figures, and italics.

Labyrindo is inspired on the classic Labyrinth. The oldest known labyrinth is 3200 years old and is to be found in Greece. The mythological king Minos held the monstrous son of his wife ‘Minotaurus’ prison in a labyrinth. Much later the labyrinth made his appearance in the medieval churches, this time as a pattern on the church floor. During the Italian renaissance the multiple gate labyrinth came in fashion. Paths led trough green hedges in beautiful palace gardens. These hedges where perfectly cut in rectangular shapes. Mainly meant as an aesthetic statement. Besides the origin of the physic labyrinth, it has always been a great source of story-telling and myths. I mention a few personal favourites (film) like, Pan’s Labyrinth (a journey to the underworld), Labyrinth (with David Bowie) and the Shining with Jack Nicholson (where a horrific scene takes place in a labyrinth). Not the most cheerful stories but fascinating and intriguing. A Labyrinth is mind boggling and mysterious but wonderful. I made graphic translation in this typeface.

In 1939 the Stephenson Blake Company bought a very popular script called Undine Ronde and began marketing under the name Amanda Ronde. Although Undine/Amanda was quite popular and can be seen in many advertisements from the 1930s and 1940s, there seems to be no surviving record stating the original foundry or designer. We thought that six and half decades of dust layers over the once-popular typeface were enough, so here and now you have its complete and expanded digital incarnation, Adore. It is quite easy to see why this typeface was popular. A round script with graceful meaty curves is rarely found and can be used in plenty of applications. Wedding paraphernalia, chapter titles, posters, poetry, book covers, religious literature... you name it, Adore can fit it. Aside from its totality being unmatched by currently available designs, Adore also possesses some of the most unique and imaginative letter shapes. The narrow loops on the B, P and R, the minuscule-like Z, the looped b and d, the descending h... all these shapes contribute to a breathtaking and adorable calligraphic work unlike any other. The Estate of Ismar David has sought to revive this jewel of Twentieth-Century design by granting an exclusive license to Monotype Imaging to implement it in industry-standard format. Never before has the typeface in its full set of sub-styles been made available to the design community. David Hadash consists of three style families, Formal, Script, and Sans. Each of these appears in three weigths: regular, medium, and bold. Originally devised as a companion to the upright Formal style, the Script style has a beauty and grace all its own that allows it to be used for full-page settings also. While it is forward-leaning and dynamic, it does not match any of the existing cursive styles of Hebrew script. Ismar David created an eminently readable hybrid style which is like no other by inclining the forms of the upright while blending in some features of Rashi style softened with gentle curves. One can say that the Script style is the first truly italic, not just oblique, typeface for Hebrew script. Although the proportions of the Sans style are very similar to those of the Formal style, its visual impression is stunningly different. If the Formal style is believably written with a broad-point pen, the Sans is chiseled in stone. Rounded angles turn angular and stark.
