My family and I recently moved to a ‘fixer upper’ farm from the 1930’s. It came with a slightly run down barn, 4000 square metres of land and a LOT of redcurrant bushes. I can’t really say that I am overly fond of them. I find them a bit too tart. As a kid, I used to smother them in sugar, but I can’t do that any longer, since I am a responsible dad… ;-) Redcurrant is a slightly wonky, slightly crazy handmade font. It can be used for book covers or post cards, but feel free to use it for whatever. Comes with cute little swashes as well.

I created this font to capture the innocence and playfulness of doodle lettering that is created in schools everywhere. Typographic rules are non-existent and the characters are sometimes oddly and incorrectly shaped but that's exactly what gives it charm. What really got me started was Napoleon Dynamite, his drawings and "typography". This font does not mimic what you see in the movie at all, but it attempts to capture the same spirit of high school "doodle typography". My favorite line: "I am pretty much the best artist I know". The font was named after Boondoggle keychains, the other craft most scholars acquire at some point in their school careers.

Struffoli are small, marble sized deep fried dough balls from Naples. They are served with a variety of sweet condiments, like honey, sugar and sprinkles. There is nothing deep fried about Struffoli font, nor does it resemble a deep fried dough ball: I just liked the name and at least now I can say what Struffoli are! Struffoli was handmade using a brush and Chinese ink. It does look like a connected script font, but it is not (really): only a few letters connect, making it a more versatile font. Use it for your cookbooks, posters and toy packaging. Rest assured, it comes with a generous serving of diacritics.

“Kamenica” - named after a beautiful small mountain river in Serbia - is a font family containing 3 weights: Light, Regular and Bold. The Kamenica river is only a few meters wide. Mostly shallow and cold, clear and green, it was the direct inspiration source for the creation of this condensed typeface. As our other typefaces, “Kamenica” also combines traditional shapes with modern forms, tall x-height and a collection of more than 300 glyphs. Comparing the river with the font, we could say that letters are the fishes that lives in the Kamenica river and that the font weights are the seasons in which this river shows most of its own character.

Red Tape is three fonts that were designed by sticking letters together with red tape. It makes for a wonderful makeshift set of fonts. And I really enjoyed sticking those letters together. Of course I did it on screen using bits and pieces of scanned red tape. Just use it as you like, I won't give you any red tape in how to use the fonts. »Red Tape« is since February 2012 on permanent display in the »German National Library« – next to the likes of »Bodoni«, »Garamond« and »Helvetica« – being part of the exhibition about type through the ages. Dolsáb was designed from scratch with uniqueness in mind. The subtle movement from thick to thin and the variants of sharp to rounded make this cutting edge san serif a must have. The inspiration for Dolsab was a simple pairing of a rhombus and calligraphy. While neither of those two elements can be seen in their entirety in any instance, the influence of both is strong. The rhombus can be notice on most ascenders like on the lowercase t & l, for example. And the calligraphy inspiration is most easily captured on the descenders such as the lowercase y & g. The most beautiful characteristics of Dolsab is definitely the calligraphy-influenced movement. These features really stand out on the lowercase a & e. It's almost amusing to let your eye follow the contours of those two letter forms as they travel from thick to thin, sharp to rounded and back again. Users are welcomed to try all font styles of Dolsab in any applique of their choosing. However, it will be quickly noticeable that only Dolsab Air & Demi (the thiner of the styles) will be best suited for body copy. Personally I like to see these letterforms as large as they can be to really showcase the subtle movement, especially in Dolsab Heavy where these movements become much more dramatic. You'll never know what really works best unless you experiment. Dolsab surely isn't the answer to all projects, but it's certainly worth trying. No other typeface moves quite like Dolsáb.

I've had a lot of lovely cakes through the years (My wife is a great cook!) But I've also tried some really...ehem...not so good cakes. Actually, the worst cake I ever had, was at work - if you didn't know, I work as a kindergarten teacher - and the cake was made by one of the kids! Anyway, this font was made as a sort of tribute to that cake - the font may not represent something that is smooth and lovely, but it was made with lots of personality and love - just like that cake from that kindergarten kid!

Bandalero is a witty display font from British designer Richard Yeend. The letterforms in this poster/display typeface are quite square-ish and geometric. The lowercase letters have short x-heights, and the uppercase letters look dressed for a showdown, with bandoleer-like elements strapped across their tops. I have been to Japan many times, but I have to admit that I have not (yet) been to Odaiba, so this font is a reminder that I should go there one day. Odaiba is a large artificial Island in the bay of Tokyo. It is a popular shopping and sightseeing destination and its sights include a copy of the Statue of Liberty and a mega-sized Gundam Robot. Odaiba Script is a handwritten font. I used a Sharpie pen on paper, so it is nice and thick. It comes with double letter ligatures and all diacritics.

I seem to be in my comic book font fase. It's not that I have tons of comics lying around (I actually have none), but when I was a kid, I used to read them all the time. Laser Eyes is a handmade comic book font. It is a little rounded, a little fat and very useful. High Fidelity is our funky new variable font that was inspired by an incredible vintage poster we saw at the NYPL (sadly, the designer wasn't credited.) First we developed the ultra wide top-heavy style. Then, unable to resist the dynamics of variable type, we added the narrow width and violà our first variable font was born. Whenever I see clippings on TV of demonstrations, protesting against this or that, with people holding up signs, I am surprised about the signs being professionally printed or plotted in Helvetica or Futura condensed. I've even seen signs in Zapfino! That doesn't really cut it, it doesn't look much like a real protest. So I decided to give the protesting world a real good font for the occasion. We just had the Eurovision Song Contest here in Holland. I quite like to watch it, as it is usually a freak show of kitsch, political incorrectness and often really bad music. But it is a laugh and this year was no different. It inspired me to create this particular font with this particular name. Sing Along is a happy, wobbly, kitschy font that comes with a bit of ‘over-the-topness’, a few personality issues and an unsteady gait. Needless to say, it is politically incorrect, but that, my friends, is not necessarily a bad thing.
