Hydrargyrum is the Latin form of a Greek word meaning "liquid silver" - mercury. The Hydrargyrum typefaces are designed with characteristics both of a metal and a liquid. The basic shapes of the letters are generally rigid and rectangular (particularly in style C), but the forms are enhanced by fluid curves and gently rounded corners. Hydrargyrum is not recommended for use at small sizes or in lengthy passages of text. It performs best in display-sized settings. Hydrargyrum consists of three styles, each in medium and semibold weights with matching obliques. The A style features solid, standard letterforms including the two-story a and g. Style B substitutes the a, g, M, and N (and related glyphs including numero and trademark symbols) for alternate shapes. The third subfamily takes the rectangular theme to an extreme, eliminating as many slanted strokes as possible from the letterforms. This makes some C-style letters ambiguous with one another, such as the U's and V's. As such, the C style is best used carefully even at larger sizes. Some time ago, I found myself in a clinic with my wife: at the time she was 20 weeks pregnant and had to do an ultrasound. To pass the time, I leafed through some (ladies') magazines which were lying around. Most of them tackled big issues like which shoes to wear and what type of foundation to plaster on, but one glossy featured a photo shoot. The photographer had found an old building with a beautiful art deco tile mural and had placed his skinny model in front of it. Fortunately for me, the mural featured a lot of text in a beautiful frilly style. I re-created the font I saw and it became "Jubileum" - which just means Jubilee in Dutch.

I love markets, especially the farmer’s markets with fresh produce and home made cheese. I was asked by a good friend of mine to design his tattoo lettering. This fellow prefered an easy stencil with no ornament, such as swirls or loops. The Device interpretation of the classic “Grot” thick/thin sans style. Unlike the traditional models on which it is based, Grange takes a rational, consistent approach across wide range of weights and widths for contemporary use. The "Text" weights are designed for use at smaller sizes, and have more open character shapes and spacing for legibility. The font includes alternative curved and straighter versions of key characters, most obviously the lower-case ‘g' and capital ‘R', allowing the font to take on either a sharper or warmer, more playful appearance. These can be toggled on or off using the ‘Alts' feature in Illustrator, or ‘Stylistc Sets’ in Indesign. Contains proportional, lining and tabular numerals. Perfect for both headline and text.

Germany has a strong heritage of industrial typefaces. These fonts seem like being constructed by engineers. The shapes seem to be built with circles and squares. DIN Mittelschrift is one very famous example, or the font on the old German car number plates. Since the Romain du Roi we know that it is tricky to draw a geometrical typeface. For optical reasons you have to go away from circles and lines with exactly one weight. Therefore the aim is not to construct a typeface but to draw it the way it seems constructed finally. The design of a typeface is like stage production. Like heavily made up actors the characters of a typeface must be exaggerated to work well. Particularly in small sizes.
