When teaching font-making at the Art Institute of Tucson, I give my students plenty of lab time to come up with design ideas. I designed Pucky while one class created their fonts. It came about through an idea for a capital A: sort of a triangle with two round sides and a crossbar formed by a circle falling out. (You can see it here.) In drawing that, I hit upon the idea of making the tops of the alphabet sharp and square and the bottoms rounded. (See the whole alphabet here.) Pucky suggests both circus and psychedelia. Hmmmm, does anybody have an “in” at Cirque du Soleil?

HeyPumkin is a letterbat font designed for use in the late autumn, when the leaves are falling and the harvest is underway. October 31 is an especially good time to use it. The upper- and lower-case letters are almost identical. If you want a version of this face without the pumpkins, try Ingone. Buried in the font is another set of letters on pumpkins. They are on unicode characters in the 2400 block, circled digits and letters. These characters can also be accessed using the OpenType stylistic sets feature. P22 Victorian is a font set created in conjunction with the Albright-Knox Art Gallery's exhibition of Victorian-era French artist James Tissot. Speakeasy is a 5-font combo thematically built as a toolset for designing menus and liquor labels as well as coffees, restaurants and signs when the desire is to communicate with style. Originally put together to be used by the most famous speakeasy in Buenos Aires, this set contains a script, a minor (almost flat) wedge serif, a flare serif, a sans serif, and a bold Didone. The Standard version of the Norden font family (see Round and Display) is "a standard sans serif" font. Hassan is a traditional-style Arabic text face designed by Hassan Sobhi Mourad, an experienced calligrapher and teacher of the art and first produced by the Linotype Design Studio (U.K.) as a PostScript font in 1993.
