Ballard Ave is inspired by old vintage signage found in Ballard, Washington, an old neighborhood of Seattle. Ballard Avenue is a protected historical district filled with turn of the century brick buildings that have been converted into quaint shops and independent businesses. This alphabet is based on the antique signage that still exists on the sides of many of these buildings.

Transistor is a decorative and electronic serif typeface. One of the historical connection was the Didot, development in French. Transistor typeface was designed from the concept and experimentation with electronic circuits. The main typographic proportion are connected with the modern typeface, like Didot where the letterforms are inspired from the point nib pen design approach but also with electronic type style letterforms.

Beneath the dominant signifier of identity, a surprising dimension of Bodoni is revealed—its core architecture, stripped of the famous high contrast cloak. Further subverting typographic norms, a monoline of even width (in all but the heaviest weights) here describes capitals, lower case, and serifs. And yet a certain quaintness is evident; this is, after all, both deconstruction and historical fiction.

Friedrich Bauer’s Senatsfraktur, coming in two styles, regular and bold, released by Genzsch and Heyse, Hamburg, in 1912, has come to life again. Both styles contain the traditional long s which can be accessed by either the OT feature historical alternatives or by typing [alt] + b. To get access to all ligatures, it is recommended to activate both Standard and Discretionary Ligatures.

Noted British type designer David Quay designed Blackmoor in 1983. Based on an old English letter style, this textura-style Blackletter evokes a mediaeval character, expertly mixing a gothic lowercase together with Lombardic capitals. This font was inspired from the so called "Insular Style" Latin script used in Celtic monasteries (Ireland, Scotland—with the well known Book of Kells—and England) from the late 6th to 9th, before the Carolingian "Caroline" (look at our 825 Karolus). It was a regular script, rounded, written slowly, used mainly for specially meticulous books, with a very few ligatures. The rarely-used capitals consisted of enlarged lowercases, but, on the other hand, there was numerous historical initials. The Titling style in this familly allows to two-color decorated letters to be created, using OTF Titling feature or copy and paste technique. We have created the font as to be adapted for contemporary users, differentiating between U and V, I and J, which has not any relevance for ancient Latin scribes, and naturally with Thorn, Oslash, Lslash, K,W... The specific Celtic "y" is added as an historical alternate.

Plantin is a Renaissance Roman as seen through a late–industrial-revolution paradigm. Its forms aim to celebrate fine sixteenth century book typography with the requirements of mechanized typesetting and mass production in mind. How did this anomalous design come about? In 1912 Frank Hinman Pierpont of English Monotype visited the Plantin-Moretus Museum in Antwerp, returning home with “knowledge, hundreds of photographs, and a stack of antique typeset specimens including a few examples of Robert Granjon’s.” Together with Fritz Stelzer of the Monotype Drawing Office, Pierpont took one of these overinked proofs taken from worn type to use as the basis of a new text face for machine composition. Body text set in Plantin produces a dark, rich texture that’s suited to editorial and book work, though it also performs its tasks on screen with ease. Its historical roots lend the message it sets a sense of gravity and authenticity. CA Mechano is quite what the name suggests – A mechanical typeface. Pretty straight forward and all-caps as long as you don’t activate the stylistic set "disorder". You will see what happens then: a lot of fun for the typographic eye. A more consumable distraction is offered by the other stylistic set. You will dis­cover peacefully rounded letters in the neighborhood of strictly mechanically constructed glyphs.

Jantar Sharp is a text family with flared terminals that eludes the catego­ries of serif or sans. Its most recognisable features are taken from both styles to achieve proper design and high legibility standards. Jantar Sharp performs especially well when used for continuous reading including texts on web platforms. Its personality lies in the flared stroke endings and certain details which make its shapes neither sans nor serifs. Rather than following any particular historical model, it picks up elements from various periods to achieve an organically dynamic look which is entirely compatible with the reading process. Beckinslade is a lovely elaborate blackletter face, released just in time for Christmas, but useable at any time of the year. It is in the best traditions of Victorian Gothic revival, drawing inspiration from a range of sources and marrying them into one homogenous whole. The emphasis is on aesthetics rather than historical accuracy. Great fun though for anywhere ‘ye olde’ look is desired.

Gotica Lumina is a an attempt to make blackletter more legible to the 21st century's eye. It is available in two styles: soft (for text) and sharp (for display). Both of them have an alternate font, which contains stylistic alternate forms for several characters, for a more “traditional” look. ITC Braganza is the work of British designer Phill Grimshaw, an elegant typeface steeped in historical inspiration. Reminiscent of the handwritten manuscript styles of the 16th century, the name Braganza refers to Catherine, Duchess of Braganza, who was a prominent figure in Portugal at the time. The vertical script style displays the elegance and refinement which distinguished the Royal Courts of the 16th century.

Alta California became designer steve mehallo's "vector-based artist's response" to the early Apple Macintosh bitmapped font San Francisco. Alta California was developed using "sampled" wood type and letters from numerous historical sources. The name comes from the Alta California newspaper, the first daily published in California, one of a dubious Barbary Coast nature, a sheet that shaped the bias of San Franciscans and attracted its own grade of reporters, including a printing specialist who went under the nom de plume Mark Twain. Alta California's edges were meticulously redrafted by hand, with letterpress-inspired fallout and 19th century pointing hands. The final collection of rough hewn letters jump, dive, fall, zag and zig. Alta California looks great on greeting cards, food packaging, as retail signage for boutiques, vintage stores or at D.I.Y. sales, on band posters or club cards, in and around historical quarters, or for use on any ransom note that needs to evoke a wild west look and feel.

A September 29, 1920 edition of The San Diego Union ran the headline “Cicotte Confesses Baseball Fraud; Eight White Sox Players Indicted”. The White Sox baseball scandal was the first to reveal illegal gambling on the game. Alejandro Lo Celso’s tribute to Bodoni takes the form of a humorous fat face for display use, in both solid and engraved forms. Four years after Bodoni’s death, Margherita, Giambattista’s widow, published the two volumes of the famous Manuale Tipografico, a significant catalogue even today. Margarita’s curves are extremely sensual, it should be set only at huge sizes. This family was inspired by the early Fraktur style font used circa 1530 by Jacob Otther, printer in Strasbourg (Alsace-France) for German language printed books. Although it is an early Fraktur pattern, it is easy to see the characteristic differences with the Schwabacher style (look at 1538 Schwabacher), like in the small d, o or y... and the capitals (look at the H, K, T...). Frequently, Schwabacher and Fraktur were used together in the same book : Fraktur style for the main and Schwabacher for marginalia and comments. This font contains standard ligatures and German historical ligatures (German double s, long s, ts...) and diacritics (special ummlaut "e superscript" and "∞" instead of dieresis with letters a, o and u,) naturally, we have added numerous letters lacking in the original to permit a contemporary use of the font.

Vinneta is a direct italic font. Its contours and graceful, and precise. Patzcuaro is a summer resort by a lake of the same name. It is situated 370 km west of Ciudad de Mexico and a visitor from Europe, on seeing it, will be reminded of the Austrian Rust or the South Bohemian Trebon. The town's colonial architecture is protected as a historical monument, the reddish-brown tint of the footings of the buildings, their white facades and even the type of lettering with red initials is prescribed - and these regulations are also complied with as far as cars are concerned. This colour scheme is splendid in combination with the rich gamut of greys of the stone window jambs, vaults, lintels and pillars. Joking apart, even the local petrol station is 16th-century in appearance. Patzcuaro Regular is a cosy, welcoming type face which is good for use on labels.

Mirabeau Buonaparte Lamar had an exotic name for a historic Texan, but he left his mark beginning in 1836, the year of Texas independence and the first year that pioneers other than mountain men made their way West. Lamar went on to become the young republic’s first elected vice-president (to President Houston) and second president -- and to author a number of interesting letters in his elegant, stylish hand. (Mirabeau B. Lamar grew up a well-to-do southerner from Georgia, and his penmanship shows it.) One of the most interesting aspects of designing old handwriting fonts, to me, is pausing to reflect on the actual moment that the letter-writer is sitting at his or her desk or table, pen in hand, putting thoughts to words -- 150 to 200 years ago.
