Kano is inspired by the work of Dutch furniture designer and architect Gerrit Rietveld, one of the principal members of the Dutch artistic movement De Stijl. Display Board JNL is based on Futura Display, which was designed in 1932 by Paul Renner as an extension of his original (1927) Futura family of typefaces. According to Wikipedia, the font was developed as a typeface by the Bauer Type Foundry, in competition with Ludwig & Mayer's seminal Erbar typeface of 1926 Display Board JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Over the years I have bought many books and music CDs in persuit of my passion for African and Latin (and especially Afro-Latin) cultures. I've noticed that a great number of these books and CDs feature either of two popular display fonts that are, in my opinion, very much overused. As an alternative, I designed Tambor. Fondly Yourz is a less than serious, hand drawn serif font. This headline font has nice thick and thin lines. Pair it with a sans serif font for body copy for a fresh contemporary look. Fondly Yourz can be seen in the 2012 Typodarium Page-A-Day Calendar on 8-13-2012.

Screenplay JNL was modeled from the signage seen in an old photo of the RKO movie studios building circa the 1930s. This multi-line lettering is so classic of the Art Deco period. For best effect and readability, use wider spacing between letters. For single words or initials, regular spacing should do fine.

The title and credits for the 1951 Dick Powell and Rhonda Fleming film “Cry Danger” were hand lettered in a freehand brush lettering often seen on store signs and show cards. Serving as the model for Show Card Freehand JNL, this pleasant and casual typeface is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Many fonts have carried this name. Ours goes back to just before 1900 in France. This general style had considerable popularity among job printers all over Europe. We have even seen it used for name imprints on medical school diplomas, which seems a bit grotesk. Surely you can do something better with it.

Broadside Text is a companion to Broadside, and is optimised for use at smaller sizes. More open counters, more generous letter-spacing and additional fractions increase legibility. The original Broadside family is suitable for headlines and larger sizes, and also comes with condensed and extended versions. Broadside is a versatile, authoritative and functional family inspired by the sans serifs seen on ’40s and ’50s patriotic posters and period advertising. It is available in seven weights across condensed, normal and extended widths, each with reweighed italics. The type from this period was very often hand-drawn, and so differs considerably from poster to poster. Many American examples of this period use a Photo-Lettering style called Murray Hill and its derivatives, although their UK counterparts, designed by such luminaries as Abram Games or Tom Eckersley, are more stylistically diverse. Even though no single model is available to base a digitisation on, there are certain recurring stylistic quirks that give the type its unique flavour, and so the most interesting examples from several sources were be combined for the final family. Alternate short descenders, allowing for tighter line spacing, can be toggled on or off in the Opentype panel of Indesign or Illustrator. Tabular and lining numerals and a single-story ‘a’ are also available in all weights and styles.
