Gobble gobble gobble! The Gobbler font was drawn with a leaky pen on a napkin at the Modern Cafe in Northeast Minneapolis while the designer, Mister Chank Diesel, was waiting for some pot roast. “Apple cobbler drippings on the napkin add more character to the strokes of each letter,” says Chank. This font was originally named Modern Napkin, a free font released in 1997. Chank completed the character set, fixed some curves, and cleaned up some of the apple cobbler to make a more elegant font in 1999. Gobbler works great for either text or display purposes.

Kewl is the result of being caught in the afterimage of one design project while conceptualizing another one. Just before finishing the final tests on Mrs Blackfort, the first of what became a long series of Charles Bluemlein fonts, some of the letters began morphing differently in my mind. The idea was to go on the heavier and more playful side, but with a South American sign letterer’s twist, rather than just good handwriting. I did some sketching, took some notes, then got busy with other projects. Some of that stuff eventually seeped into Candy Script and, to a lesser extent, the Whomp font. But it was only a matter of time before I got back to the original concept and finished it. Kewl is ideal for food packaging, book and music covers, magazines, and window splashes. I was commissioned by the Emporium (now Macys) to digitize Radiant Bold Extra Condensed (originally designed by Robert Middleton in 1940) for use in their Sunday supplement to the San Francisco Examiner. For several years, I stubbornly refused to add the lowercase letters to the font, because I thought it looked best just used with caps, but finally relented, added the lowercase letters and at the same time created two more weights as well: Light and Medium. Used very large and carefully, these faces can be quite elegant.

Linotype Octane is part of the Take Type Library, selected from the contestants of Linotype’s International Digital Type Design Contests of 1994 and 1997. The font was designed by German artist Norbert Reiners, a tall, thin font with a narrow line width and marked stroke contrast. The regular and bold weights seem somewhat static while the italic cuts make a dynamic impression. Linotype Octane is available in four weights, each of which contains a number of ligatures. The cool and reserved Octane is best used for shorter texts and headlines in larger point sizes.

"Precolombina" consists on a series of graphic symbols native to South America, decorative trims, and a minimal set of typographic characters. The signs were taken from ceramic pottery, clothing, and petroglyphs from the southern cone of South America. We try to select a varied range of signs representing shamans, jaguars, rheas, monkeys, birds, and mythological beings. The decorative trims are taken from the same places and occupy the set of numbers. Finally, it contains the minimum characters of a font to achieve a brand or a title.
