I come from a family of educators- my mom, husband, stepmom, brother-in-law, and sister are all currently teaching and I have taught in the past. This font was created after speaking to several elementary school teachers who were struggling to find just the right font to use on worksheets and projects in their classroom. They liked many features of other fonts, but needed small things altered in order to make a "perfect fit" for their class. Hand-drawn by me, this font hopefully addresses several of those issues. As penmanship styles vary across the globe, I am sure this font will not work in every classroom. But hopefully this style will work for many teachers to give their early readers a highly legible, neat, accurate font. It is best used with kerning turned on to allow for accurate letter spacing.

Xunga is a cheerful display typeface. My goal was to design a font able to fit any layout with boldness and playfulness, mixing a sign painter taste in the uppercase and some of my crappy calligraphic reverse contrast explorations with the flat brush for the lowercase. I designed several of widths to fit the page, and though about a different way of expanding the family shifting the horizontal stress axis to move the letter weight in different heights, making a 15 fonts family, suitable for making bold layouts. Xunga has an extended character set for European languages as well as Vietnamese, and shows all its potential with OpenType-savvy applications. Every font includes ligatures, catchwords in discretional ligatures, contextual alternates to avoid conflictive glyph pairs and localized forms to avoid problems with several glyphs and languages.

Beware The Neighbors is based on “Personality Script”, a rough alphabet originally drawn by Ross F. George, and published in one of the Speedball series of lettering catalogs that ran from 1935 to 1948. The design is something of a minor classic, and several foundries have recreated digital fonts based on it. However, mostly of these interpretations are very “geometric”, formed using straight lines. Intellecta preferred to create a new interpretation using smoother, curved lines to create a creepy appearance. Also included are several ligatures and OpenType stylistic alternates. This version also has an extended character set for use in Central as well as and West European countries, plus Baltic, Turkish and Romanian. The Vtg Stencil fonts from astype are based on real world stencils from several countries. The Italian stencils that I chose as a model for this font are roughly based on classic French stencil letters. Please compare the figures (numbers) with their French counterparts. However, the Italian stencils are made with a different production technique. The design of the letters is clearly not punch-cut into the plates, maybe they are drilled, milled or etched. Details such as the serifs look bold and clumsy, and when using the stencils as they are meant, with viscous sign paint, smaller details easily fade away. So I took my freedom to design a font close to the original design but adding several typographic tweaks to let it shine, hoping to get closer to the intended design idea of these Italian stencils. At first glance, the lettering style of Technopen JNL seems to emulate the computer-age fonts of the 1980s. In actuality, this font is derived from an alphabet sample found in an instructional booklet for the Esterbrook Drawlet Pens. The Drawlet line was Esterbrook's answer to the iconic Speedball pen points sold through their chief competitor, the Hunt Pen Manufacturing Company. So, what seems to be late 20th Century typography is actually from vintage source material. In fact, the entire contents of the instructional booklet were copyright 1929! A few minor changes were made to the original A-Z alphabet and additional characters were added. The name Technopen is a shortening of the term 'technical pen', which is both a nod to the techno age of the 80s and the technical instruments of the past utilized for drawing and lettering.

When teaching font-making at the Art Institute of Tucson, I give my students plenty of lab time to come up with design ideas. I designed Pucky while one class created their fonts. It came about through an idea for a capital A: sort of a triangle with two round sides and a crossbar formed by a circle falling out. (You can see it here.) In drawing that, I hit upon the idea of making the tops of the alphabet sharp and square and the bottoms rounded. (See the whole alphabet here.) Pucky suggests both circus and psychedelia. Hmmmm, does anybody have an “in” at Cirque du Soleil?

Duct tape is one of the most versatile adhesive materials known today. From fixing the bumper of your car that keeps falling off, to creating a sturdy wallet. From alternative wrapping to sticking a friend to the wall, Duct tape is there. And it will stay there. It will stick to anything and hold for a very darn long time too! The cloth-backed tape was invented some time during World War II, and also proved itself useful as a base material for lettering. VLNL Duct was originally designed by DBXL as a logo for temporary Amsterdam restaurant BAUT. DBXL imagined an owner taping the name on the window of his shop using Duct tape. The font was used for all communication of the restaurant. Duct is a sturdy, rough all-caps typeface that will stick to anything.
