The Klutz AOE Pro Family was inspired by the plethora of naive hand drawn lettering becoming commonplace in modern advertising. What I hadn't seen was a family of hand drawn typefaces, in a range of widths and weights, with both alternate capitals as well as small caps character sets...and so Klutz Pro was born. The letterforms started with a few letters my daughter had drawn which I expanded on from there. Pulling from inspirations in retro cartoon titling and modern hand lettering playfulness, the full font was born, with weights and width to follow. Before 1959, in pre-Castro Havana, Cuba, the preeminent nightclub was the Tropicana. During the regime of Fulgencio Batista, Cuba was resplendent with nightclubs and gambling casinos catering to [mostly] the North American tourists; which brought it the title of the Monte Carlo of the Americas. Although Cuba (and the world as a whole) has changed vastly over the decades, the hand-lettered logo of the Tropicana Night Club has survived, and has been reproduced as a complete digital font called Tropicano JNL (a slight twist to the club's name). At first the font seems to be awkward, crude and amateurish, but in taking a second look, there's a playful charm to it. Additionally, this font can double as a "spooky" font for the Halloween season, monster parties and in other similar themes.

How should an authentic baudelairean type look like? Aesthetically beautiful, that’s for sure. Intellectual, neurotic. Uptight — oh, the conventions of the time. Easily readable — still 20 years to go until the age of art nouveau with its outrage of typefaces. It may have a vibe of a Paris salon - salute to the Parnassiens. Such a modern-class (don’t mix it with the modern-styled) pharmaceutical Antiqua. Contrasts, thin serifs, the integrity of the operating theatre. But Baudelaire is not Heredia. «Une charogne» is not that much a vivid metaphor as a drawing from nature. The baudelairean typeface should have its cavern, flow, dark side. My family and I are stuck in quarantine for a week; my eldest son tested positive for Covid19 (but everyone else tested negative), so we can’t go out. That means that the kids follow classes online. I noticed their notebooks and suddenly realised that a notebook used to be called a ‘cahier’, which is a French word meaning the exact same thing. I guess it sounded sophisticated at the time. Mon Petit Cahier (meaning: My Little Notebook) is a handmade script font. It is not meant to be awe-inspiring, nor do you want to use it for headlines or posters. It is a nice little font that feels at home wherever an unobtrusive script is needed. Comes with all the diacritics you want and a set of cool double letter ligatures.

This font is the result of merging my architecture background and my love for typography, which inspired me to create a system of fonts based on interior architecture design, furniture design and, especially, the love I feel for my home. The system comes with a monolinear style in sans and script versions, each including 5 weights, that share similar proportions, weight interpolation and details. Hogar is basically a sans with script gestures and a script with sans shapes. Who is not totally captured when looking at those marvelously handmade old manuscripts, where letters, borders and elements were so masterfully realized with some touch of Gold leaf (or Silver in some cases) that was making of an ordinary book a piece of art? The name of the pack “Illuminated” comes, like the ancient art used for the old manuscripts, from the latin word “Illuminare” (to light up) and it’s symbol of great value, preciousness and beauty skilfully created with patience and love from artists for centuries. What we at Fontscafe wanted to give you was the opportunity to get a whole “ready to use” set of fonts that could, in a modern and revised form, give that “Illuminated” feeling to our “Digital Era”. Cruickshank is a decorative typeface from the late Victorian period. The upper case includes several letters with swash strokes, extending well below the baseline, as found in the original design. Alternatives to the swash caps are provided. The lower case contains small caps of simpler design. The face was designed by William W. Jackson and released by MacKellar, Smiths and Jordan Type Foundry of Samson Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1886. MS&J was founded originally as Binny & Ronaldson in 1796 and later known as The Johnson Type Foundry. Cruickshank has a strong late Victorian flavor without the extravagance of so many fonts of the period. In its simplicity and clarity, it may be seen as a precursor to the Art Nouveau style that would develop a decade later.

RARE BIRD SPECIMEN III Rare Bird Specimen III is a graceful hand by Karla Lim of Written Word Calligraphy. This all lowercase font feels both modern and feminine. While uppercase letters are still lowercase in shape, they are larger and read as caps. OBSERVATIONS Specimen III has a dancer-like form; supple and lithe. Willowy letters are nimble and lissome, content alone or paired with a stronger, more masculine specimen.
